Muslika and Tingey score as Under-18s battle out Chelsea draw - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Our Under-18s came away with a hard-earned point from Saturday morning’s trip to Chelsea.

Armend Muslika and Tyley Tingey fired us ahead twice but the hosts hit back each time through a Chizaram Ezenwata penalty and Jashayde Greenwood’s 74th-minute equaliser, with both teams guilty of squandering further chances throughout the 2-2 draw.

Miracle Adewole notably went close twice for us in the second period – one of his attempts agonisingly hitting the post – with earlier opportunities for Jamel Beggs and Samal Bangura also falling by the wayside, while the Blues struck the woodwork four times overall – albeit two of those were against the outside of the post – and forced Dylan Thompson into a string of excellent saves.

Nevertheless, we produced a committed team display right until the full-time whistle to ensure we took something away from what was, as usual, a gripping, high-intensity London derby at Cobham.

Ezenwata’s early clip over Thompson was cleared off the line by retreating defender Malachi Hardy – playing his first Under-18s game of the season having primarily been with the Under-21s thus far – while his centre-half partner Elijah Upson produced a handful of authoritative blocks over the course of the game as we restricted Chelsea’s attempts to find a way through.

Midfielder Beggs was denied by goalkeeper Freddy Bernal after going through one-on-one in a big chance for us on 17 minutes while Kobe Barbour’s curler was tipped over the bar at the other end by Thompson, who stayed alert in a chaotic period in the wake of a Chelsea corner.

We took the lead on 34 minutes when Adewole was brought down at the edge of the box and Muslika curled a beauty of a free-kick into the top corner – his sixth goal in seven Under-18 Premier League games. Bangura later miscued a header from Muslika’s cross when unmarked in the Chelsea box before Thompson pulled off two superb saves, one either side of half-time, to preserve our advantage, first keeping out Ezenwata’s low volley down to his left following a free-kick before turning Mathis Eboue’s fierce shot against the post in the opening exchanges of the second period.

Just before Eboue’s chance, Adewole went through in the inside left channel for us but saw his effort come back off the far post and into the grateful grasp of Bernal, but on 52 minutes the Blues managed to breach our resistance when Upson was penalised for handball in the air while trying to defend Lewi Richards’ corner and Ezenwata sent Thompson the wrong way from the spot.

We regained the lead just two minutes later, though, Tingey ramming home his first Under-18 goal after Muslika’s curler was parried onto one of his own players by Bernal.

Muslika’s low shot towards the near post was later smothered by Bernal, with Adewole firing across goal but wide from a similar position to his earlier attempt in the inside left channel. However, Chelsea, having had a quiet spell, cranked up the pressure with 20 minutes to go and after substitute Ibrahim Rabbaj volleyed against the outside of the post and Sol Gordon’s shot was well blocked, they levelled once more on 74 minutes, Isaac Da Silva’s stooping header from Reggie Watson’s cross coming back off the upright, with Greenwood subsequently rifling high into the net.

Onassis Waite struck the outside of the post while Tingey – playing in an unfamiliar right-back role – was forced to clear Ezenwata’s effort with the goal gaping after a mix-up at the back for us as we entered the final 10 minutes. You sensed Chelsea were pushing for a late winner, but we stuck to our task brilliantly in the closing stages, Thompson with another excellent flying save to deny Rabbaj in their best opportunity in the 91st minute, while getting forward ourselves wherever possible to enable us to see out the game.

‘Both teams had some big chances’

Interim Under-18s Coach Joe Staunton couldn’t hide a sense of frustration at the final whistle following some of our missed opportunities, although he admitted the draw was probably a fair result: “It's always a tricky game coming to Cobham – the match was full of energy and enthusiasm with both teams really going at it, but in the end both teams probably deserved their point,” he reflected.

“Both teams had some big chances that they failed to capitalise on and towards the latter stages of the game I thought Chelsea probably had the better of those, but we did well to hold out and see out the draw in the end. The game was on a knife-edge at times but the missed chances has led to it only being two apiece.”

Description

Our Women’s Under-19s return to action on Sunday afternoon as they travel to Gwalia United in the first round of the FA Women’s National League Plate (2pm, UK).

Sabiha Jamal’s side secured their spot in this competition after finishing as one of the best third-placed teams in the FAWNL Cup group phase, where they faced Luton Town Ladies, Oxford United and MK Dons.

Sunday’s contest provides another opportunity for our youngsters to test themselves against senior opposition – with Gwalia United competing in the FAWNL Southern Premier Division (the third tier of Women’s football).

The Cardiff-based side are currently seventh in their league with nine points after seven games, while they finished second in their group consisting of Bristol City Academy, Keynsham Town and Swindon Town.

Watch | Last time out against MK Dons

We will be available to call upon on our players currently dual-registered with senior sides – Ruby Gaitely, Kendra Brown, Cruz Fuller-Fagan and Erin Radbourne all in contention to feature.

Sabiha also confirmed that defender Blue Bartlett-Antwi has been promoted to join the leadership group as one of the co-captains of the squad.

Previewing the contest, Sabiha said: “The short break has been really good and we come into Sunday’s game after some positive performances in the league.

“It’s arguably one of the toughest draws we could have got in the competition but, for us, it’s about showing our personality, our character and our fight and giving absolutely everything on the pitch. We’re excited about the prospect of facing a top senior side and we’re looking forward to the challenge.”

Speaking ahead of the game, captain Mia Endacott said: “It’s always good to play against senior opposition as it can be both challenging physically and competitively.

“The style of football is completely different to what we experience in the PGA, so it’s a good exposure to us. It will be a great experience for the whole group and we’re ready to head there to showcase ourselves against a really tough side.”

Tickets are available via the Gwalia United ticketing website.

Minimal updates of the game will be provided in our Live Blog covering the Birmingham City cup clash, while match report and post-match reaction here on tottenhamhotspur.com and the Spurs Official app.

The Daly Brief | Spurs vs Aston Villa, Premier League - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

'After a poor start to the season, Aston Villa have started scoring goals, while two of their England stars shone during the international break. However, can they stop the man leading the Premier League assist charts - Mohammed Kudus?...'

Rob Daly, official club commentator, presenter and pundit

Creating - and taking - chances...

Unai Emery’s side failed to score in any of their opening four Premier League matches, playing out goalless draws with Newcastle and Everton, added to defeats to Brentford and Crystal Palace. Chance creation was low too with an xG of 3.1 from those matches total, having fashioned just 4 big chances (by Opta’s metric) as well. Harvey Elliot’s goal against Brentford in the Carabao Cup last month was Villa’s first in 509 competitive minutes. But things have improved thanks to a run of four wins in all competitions having seen off Bologna (1-0), Fulham (3-1), Feyenoord (2-0) and Burnley (2-1).

Malen, Watkins and Rogers...

Perhaps it’s understandable that goals have been harder to come by this season with Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio’s loans ending – while the prolific Jhon Duran was sold in January. However, winger Donyell Malen struck twice to win the match against Burnley before the break in just his fourth league start since a winter move from Borussia Dortmund. Encouraging for Villa too, was some of the link-up play he enjoyed with Ollie Watkins and Morgan Rogers. Those two meanwhile have been busy on international duty together, with Rogers scoring his first England goal against Wales before setting up Watkins in a 3-0 win. Watkins had to withdraw from Thomas Tuchel’s squad after that game, having injured himself by colliding with the post. Villa’s number 11 recently ended a nine-game goal drought with his smart lobbed finish against Fulham.

New signings need time...

There are other new attacking talents who are yet to really get going in claret and blue. Striker Evann Guessand was a £26m investment from French club Nice, having scored 12 times in Ligue 1 last season. The Ivorian is yet to get a goal in his opening nine games (544 minutes of football) but he did register for the Ivory Coast in a 7-0 victory against Seychelles. Harvey Elliot does have a cup goal to his name since joining from Liverpool, but the versatile forward was taken off at half-time in his only league start of the season against Fulham recently. Unai Emery insisted the decision was tactical - adding that he needs time to settle. "Give him minutes, and through that he will feel confident in our structure." Jadon Sancho is another loan arrival, but having not featured in any of Manchester United’s pre-season plans, it’s clear he needs to get up to speed after making a move late in the window.

Kudus up and running...

Last time in N17...

Under-18s set for Blues battle - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Our Under-18s return to action after the international break with a London derby at Chelsea on Saturday (11am UK).

Our young side has been on an upward trajectory so far this term and are four points off the top of the league going into the weekend.

Although our last game at this level – a cup match at Burnley – was postponed before the international break, many of our Under-18s regulars were involved in an astounding 8-0 home win over Ipswich Town in the Under-17 Premier League Cup last midweek.

Striker Oliver Boast netted his first hat-trick for the club in that game following his summer arrival from Leeds United and will be hungry to add to his tally against a Chelsea side that’s so far unbeaten in this season’s Under-18 Premier League, having won four and drawn one of their five matches to date.

Cameron Thomas, Armend Muslika, Tyler Tingey, Conall Glancy and Phoenix Offiah were also on target against Ipswich.

Supporters will be able to follow live updates from Cobham via our Match Centre here on tottenhamhotspur.com and the Spurs Official app.

You can also keep up to date via our Academy social media channels, with a full match report available on the website and app after the game as usual.

Presser Points | Spurs vs Birmingham, Women's League Cup | Martin Ho - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

On the fan forum last night…

“It's important. I think for the unity between the Club, between the men's and women's teams, and also the club as a whole, being able to come together to meet the fans, answer questions, and to outline the direction we're going in and where the club's going in with both teams. To be there with Thomas [Frank] was more important for me, someone who I've looked up too, and I still looked up as to as a Head Coach, and someone who I have a good relationship with. So, it was a really nice occasion for us - myself and Bethany [England] to be there and be part of that panel.”

On his relationship with Thomas Frank…

“We speak quite a bit, over the phone and on message, and we come across each other quite a lot when I'm over this side (of the training ground). We have a good relationship, he gives me small golden nuggets of advice and supports me off and on the pitch. He's always looking out for our results and he's always cheering the team on, so that's really important and I'm the same with them as a team. I think, collectively, that shows a really clear unity between both teams and we just need to keep building that relationship so we can continue to win games between one another.”

On the performance against Chelsea…

It was important. I think defensively we were good as we restricted them for large parts in terms of a clear-cut chances. Yes, they had a lot of ball, they had a lot of touches in our penalty area, they had shots, but to limit them to four shots over the whole game, limit them to one shot on target in the first half - I think deserves big credit to the playing group, to stick to something and be really effective. It took a moment of brilliance from Keira Walsh to break that down, but I couldn't have asked any more. It doesn’t just set you up for now, but it sets you up for the future, in terms of being hard to beat, and you need that mentality and that organisation to allow that. The players did themselves proud in that game and, apart from the result, we never want to lose, I hate losing, but we can definitely take positives from the defensive performance from the game.”

On what to expect from Birmingham City this weekend…

“Amy [Merricks] is a wonderful coach and has a wonderful group of players up at Birmingham, headed up by Hope Powell. They will definitely push for promotion from the Women’s Super League 2, so we're expecting a really tough game, a really efficient game. I think both teams like to have the ball, both teams want to press aggressively, so it should set up to being an entertaining game.”

On the potential of Academy players breaking into the first team…

“We have a lot of (Under-19s) training with us over the weeks. Jhanaie [Pierre] been in with us, Mia Endacott has been in with us and Sophie Jackson has been in with us quite a lot - she's now just had the call up for the England Under-19s. So there's a lot of young players coming through, a lot of good players coming through, but we don't put them in situations where they're going to suffer because you want to have a good experience in youth development and also in senior football. We also have to make sure they've got the right characteristics and they’re at the right level before they come in. I'd like to think, throughout my career, my gauge on when a player is ready is quite good in this league. There's also a lot of players training with us and that's the most important thing for me, that we see a group of solid players coming through our Academy. I work really closely with Nick [Hardy] on that, to make sure that we we're using the ethos of the club - which is to develop our own talent. But we have to make sure we get that process right where players want to be a part of it and players want to enjoy what they do - and we don't try and push them too soon, too early, where they fail too much.”

On Amy Merricks…

“She’s had a wonderful grounding as a coach and she’d probably say that herself, with Hope [Powell] around her, and some of the other staff she's worked with. She's demonstrated now her capabilities as a coach within the Birmingham set-up. She's been very competitive, she has a very well organised team, which I think is important, and she has very, very clear principles, which you can see in the way the players behave on the pitch. She's well respected in the game, which is another big positive about Amy, but also I have a lot of time for her as an individual. I know that this game's going to be tough. She’ll have those players well drilled and really well organised for this game, and their energy will be high so we have to make sure we go and be on that if we want to be competitive in this game. She has a bright future in the game and I think it’s only the start of her career in club football. She’s a top, top coach and no doubt she has a bright future.”

On the importance of going far in the competition…

“It’s a real opportunity to show that Spurs is part of a really strong pack of teams within this league - and not that it's just a one directional competition where a group of teams just seem to win it. I feel when we perform on our day – when we’re organised and we're efficient - I feel we're a match for anyone. More importantly, the more we keep growing, developing on the field, the more we can become more of a match for anybody around us, and then we can push more to those latter stages of competition. So, no matter what game I go into, if it's Cup, if it’s league, I always want to win - I hate losing. I need to make sure that we continue those behaviours, that mentality with the group, so Spurs becomes a force within this league and in any competition - that we can go out and win.”

On Jess Naz’s performances so far and the England squad selection…

“I think Jess has been performing well. What Sarina [Weigman] chooses, I respect as a coach. She's a national team coach and she picks what she feels is right, but what I do know is Jess has taken big steps. She's definitely in Sarina’s plans and her eyeline because we've spoke. It's just making sure we can continue to push Jess and challenge her to make sure that she's always in that position where Sarina’s thinking of her. She’s had a wonderful start of the season, and we have to make sure that Jess continues with that confidence and belief. I have no doubts that she'll in that England set up in the future.”

On Lize Kop being nominated for WSL Player of the Month award…

“Lize has had an impact since I've been here. She's definitely had an influence on Eleanor [Heeps] and on Sophie [Jackson], definitely. She has a big impact on the team in terms of how we play but also how we defend and her organisation in communication behind that backline is vital to what we do. I think her recognition for Player of the Month is a credit to what she's delivered for the team and, more importantly, it's a credit to herself for getting that recognition. Lize’s getting recognition for performances where we won in the game, but she has also made some big saves and big moments. That's really important for me - knowing I've got a goalkeeper there that can make that big save, that big moment, even when you don't have much to do.”
