Brighton 1-2 Spurs, Women's Super League | Martin Ho's verdict - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

In our season finale on the south coast, we had to fight until the very end to ensure we wrapped up our best-ever season in England’s top flight with another important victory – still the only team in the competition to have never lost on the final day of the season.

We had to come from behind though, after Madison Haley handed the Seagulls the lead three minutes after the break, as Olivia Holdt blasted home from close range in the final nine minutes of regulation time before Toko Koga produced a superb finish from distance to claim the maximum points.

Speaking to us afterwards, Martin reflected on a dramatic afternoon at the Amex Stadium: “The players were wonderful in terms of those who started and who came in. Everyone's contributed to the success this season.”

“All plaudits should go to the players and the staff. I think what they've done today - and throughout the season - reflects where we are now. To come back from being one behind, to go on and win the game, and actually manage it really well at the end, huge applause to the group.”

He was asked about how Toko’s goal at the end reflects on the young defender’s first season at Spurs….

“If you look at her age, she probably plays above her years as a player. As a person, she's wonderful, always wants to learn and is a leader quietly. Leadership is different in different ways, she shows that by action and how professional she is. She was deserving of that. I think what she's done all this year, she's performed at such a high level for a young player, she's just turned 20 and the future's really bright for her. When she hits that ball, under pressure, off balance, I think it shows the signs of the quality she has.”

On Olivia netting her 10th goal of the season and a remarkable first full campaign in Lilywhite…

“I know the quality Oli possesses, we have to make sure that we challenge her and we keep giving her some comfort too because you don't always hear that part you have to develop. We know what she's good at, we get her in the right areas, we get her with confidence and a good enthusiasm, and she can affect any game. I thought for spells of the game, first half definitely, second half in flashes, she was very, very good, but when she gets in those moments, if it's going to drop to someone, probably with her quality technically, you want her to land to. It was a superb finish.”

On the importance of ending the season with a win to build momentum for the next campaign…

“The way you finish is probably how you're remembered. We started with a win, we finished now with a win, and we can make sure we go away from here with confidence and a lot of motivation to come back in the summer after a well-deserved break for the players and the staff, psychologically and then also physically to reset. When we do that, we come back in with the same intentions going into next season.”

On what he has learned from his first season at Spurs…

“It's been different. I've learned a lot. I don't have all the answers, as I always say. I've still learned lots as a Head Coach. I have wonderful staff and players around me to help me understand that. I just make sure that every day I come in, I give absolutely everything - I support the staff, I challenge the staff, same with players and make sure that I can try and take this club back to where it wants to be. if I can play the small part in that, then yes, I'll be happy.”

On his final message to the fanbase for their support this season…

“They've been wonderful. The whole season we've grown in numbers, we've also grown in stature as a club and the relationship between those players and fans has grown massively - that's a credit to the players and the fans. You have to enthuse them. You have to give them something to talk about and something to shout about. The players have done that this year. Every single game, that's grown, whether that's home and away, and we need to make sure that if we want people to come and watch, we have to make sure we perform at a high level and it's entertaining. I think today definitely was.”

The 20-year-old defender produced a superb finish from distance to find the empty net after advancing goalkeeper Sophie Baggaley was left stranded outside the box thanks to pressure from departing captain Bethany England, with the Japan international running straight to the dugout to embrace Head Coach Martin Ho as our travelling supporters went wild at the Amex Stadium.

We had fallen behind to in-form Madison Haley’s goal shortly after the break but drew level nine minutes from time when Olivia Holdt lashed home her 10th goal of the season. But Koga stole the headlines with her wonder goal, as we maintained our record of never losing on the final day of a WSL season in memorable fashion.

More to follow.

Wrapping up in style: Our excellent final day record - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Our Barclays Women’s Super League campaign comes to an end on Saturday as we travel to Brighton & Hove Albion (1pm UK).

When it comes to our WSL season finales, we hold an impressive record as the only team to have never tasted defeat on the final day with three wins and two draws in five matches.

In that run, we have overcome Birmingham City (2020/21), Leicester City (2021/22) and West Ham United (2023/24) while we also ended level with the Hammers (2022/23) and Everton (2024/25).

We also have a decent record against this weekend’s opponents Brighton. In our last three trips to take on the Seagulls, we have won twice and drawn once which includes a thumping 8-0 win in October, 2022 – our highest-ever scoreline in the competition.

Cathinka Tandberg was on target in the reverse home fixture in October, 2025, which earned us a 1-0 win at Brisbane Road and we could record a double over our opponents for the second time in the WSL after doing so in 2019/20.

However, Dario Vidosic’s side are in a strong run of form themselves in recent months, currently unbeaten in their last five matches in the league – the longest run in their WSL history – and have recently booked their place in the Women’s FA Cup Final later this month.

Signe Gaupset, 20, netted her third goal of the season in our 2-1 victory over London City Lionesses last time and no team has scored more goals with players aged 21 and under in the competition than us (11 in total – level with Chelsea), which accounts for 35 per cent our goals – the highest proportion by any team in a single top-flight season since 2022/23.

Here are some other headline stats, courtesy of Opta, ahead of our final game of the 2025/26 campaign…

Brighton and Hove Albion have lost their final game in each of the last three WSL seasons, while we are the only team to have never suffered a final day defeat in the competition, winning three of five matches (D2 – excluding 2019-20).

We are already guaranteed our joint-best finish in the WSL, also ending the 2021-22 campaign in fifth; we are 13 points better off than last season when we came second bottom, the best overperformance by any team between campaigns since 2023-24 (Liverpool +18 and Spurs +13 again).

We have won eight league games by a one goal margin this season, with only Chelsea last term (10) winning more matches by a single goal in a WSL campaign; meanwhile Brighton and Hove Albion have lost eight games by one goal in 2025-26, already the joint-most narrow defeats by a side in a season.

Only three teams have scored more goals following a high turnover than both Brighton and Hove Albion and us in the Women’s Super League this season (six each), as we have both netted from two across our last three league outings.

Brighton and Hove Albion’s Fuka Tsunoda has scored in both of her two WSL starts, and could be the youngest ever player to score in each of their first three in the competition (21 years, 204 days), and the first to do so since Manchester City’s Khadija Shaw in January 2022.

Bethany England and Brighton and Hove Albion’s Fran Kirby are the joint-top scorers in final day games in the WSL with six each. Bethany could make her 66th and final WSL appearance for us, and since she joined us in January 2023, she has scored four times as many league goals as any of her team-mates (32, while Eveliina Summanen, Olivia Holdt, Martha Thomas - all eight).
