Eveliina Summanen on becoming a Spurs centurion: “I’m just grateful to be able to achieve that” - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Eveliina Summanen feels a sense of pride as she etched her name into the Club’s history book last weekend.

Starting in our comeback win over West Ham United in the Women’s Super League on Sunday, the Finland international, who joined us in January, 2022, rightly became part of the ‘100 Club’, reaching a century of appearance for the Club.

A consistent performer in the heart of our midfield since she made the move to north London midway through the 2021/22 campaign, the 27-year-old has consistently worn the Lilywhite shirt with plenty of heart and passion, week in, week out.

So, when asked about her thoughts on achieving this milestone at the Club, there was no surprise that Eve couldn’t stop beaming with pride.

Speaking in an exclusive interview in the matchday programme for Sunday’s derby against Chelsea, our number 25 said: “Of course, it means a lot. It’s a big achievement to reach 100 appearances for Spurs and I’m just grateful to be able to achieve that.

“Obviously, I dreamed about it, but I never expected it. So, now, it’s amazing that it has become a reality. I feel I have grown into the league, the team and the club and I love putting on and wearing the Spurs shirt.

“Being at a big club like Spurs, I was able to settle in and then grow into the role I have now. I feel like I’ve come a long way and I’ve had amazing team-mates and staff, as well as different cultures, helping me become a better player and who I am now.”

Read the full interview with Eve in Sunday’s matchday programme. Still priced at £3.50, the 40-page issue also features Martin Ho’s exclusive column, the latest instalment of our ‘Player Mash-Up’ series - this week with Olivia Holdt – plus an interview with F1 Academy Champion and Spurs supporter, Abbi Pulling.

And, for the first time, we’ll have an exclusive pull-out poster inside our programmes, so make sure to grab your copy.

Description

Manchester United boss Michael Carrick has three injury concerns ahead of our trip to Old Trafford on Saturday.

A former player of ours (2004-2006), Michael, who recently took interim charge of United, spoke in a press conference yesterday and confirmed three of his players would likely miss the lunchtime clash.

Beginning with former Chelsea man Mason Mount, the midfielder is getting closer to a return after missing their 3-2 win over Fulham last weekend, but Carrick was not drawn on whether Mount could be in line to face us this weekend.

Fri 06 February 2026, 14:15| Tottenham Hotspur

As Martin Ho takes to the home dugout at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the first time on Sunday afternoon, we will be seeking to extend our impressive home record in the Women’s Super League this term.

Picking up 16 points from our seven home fixtures at Brisbane Road to date, we’ve the second-best home record in England’s top flight this campaign - only current league leaders Manchester City have accumulated more points on their own turf (24).

And, having beaten Aston Villa and Leicester City in our last two clashes at Brisbane Road, we’ll be aiming to win three home matches in a row in the WSL for the first time since our promotion in 2019.

We head into Sunday’s London derby on the back of an impressive comeback win at West Ham United, with second-half goals from Matilda Vinberg and Olivia Holdt earning a 2-1 victory at Chigwell Construction Stadium.

That comeback was the third time we have won from behind in the league – our most wins from losing positions in a single WSL campaign – while we’ve won the most points from behind in the competition this term (nine).

However, to continue on our impressive run of form in front of our home crowd, we’ll need to achieve something that we’ve never done against London rivals Chelsea.

In our last 12 meetings with the Blues in the WSL, the six-time league champions have come out on top every single time.

Opponents Chelsea, though, will arrive in N17 having lost back-to-back WSL games for the first time since July, 2015 – suffering a 2-0 defeat to Arsenal followed by a heavy 5-1 loss to Manchester City.

Here are some other headlines pre-match facts, courtesy of Opta, ahead of Sunday’s London derby at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium…

Chelsea have dropped points in six different WSL games this season (D3 L3), their most times in a campaign since the 2018-19 season (8 times – D6 L2); since MD8 in November last year, only Liverpool (7), Everton (6) and Leicester City (4) have won fewer points in the top-flight than the Blues (8 – P7 W2 D2 L3).

We have won eight of their 14 league games this season (D2 L4), and we could now record nine victories in a single WSL campaign for only the second time after the 2021-22 season (also 8 in 2023-24). Our 28 shots in MD14’s win over West Ham were their most ever in a WSL game.

Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor has suffered back-to-back defeats for the very first time in her managerial career (P181 W149 D18 L14), while her three losses in Chelsea’s last five league games (W2) are more than she suffered across her first 104 league matches with Lyon and the Blues (W92 D10 L2).

Only Khadija Shaw’s goals (14 goals, 8 points) have yielded more points for their side in the WSL this season than those from Tottenham Hotspur pair Bethany England (4 goals, 7 points) and Olivia Holdt (4 goals, 6 points); Holdt is one of only two players to score from outside the area this season with both her left foot (vs Man City) and right foot (vs West Ham) alongside Brighton’s Marisa Olislagers.

Alyssa Thompson is Chelsea’s leading goalscorer in the WSL this season with five goals – that tally is already the third most ever by a non-English player for the reigning champions in a campaign while aged 21 or under, after Erin Cuthbert in 2018-19 (8 for Chelsea) and Kim Little in 2012 (7 for Arsenal).

The Daly Brief | Man United vs Spurs, Premier League - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

"Michael Carrick has won three games from three, beating the two main title challengers in the process. How has he done this – and what will Thomas Frank do after a system tweak helped inspire the comeback against City?"

Rob Daly, official club commentator, presenter and pundit

What are United doing differently?

No Premier League formation has been discussed more than Manchester United’s this season. When Ruben Amorim switched to a back four in late December, with key players away at AFCON, United claimed a 1-0 win over Newcastle. But days later, his preferred 3-4-3 was back - and the team were held at home by bottom-of-the-table Wolves. Shortly after a subsequent 1-1 draw at Leeds, Amorim was gone. Michael Carrick’s appointment has seen United revert to a 4-2-3-1, his preferred system when at Middlesbrough, with players in their more conventional positions. With the team looking more compact too, Casemiro isn’t having to run as far and is more comfortable when the team are out of possession, while Kobbie Mainoo, having essentially been exiled from the team, is back, and looks composed on the ball, whether carrying or moving it sharply onto team-mates.

Who will play in attack?

Patrick Dorgu’s injury feels like a loss for United right now, given Carrick played him as a left-winger against City and Arsenal, with the Danish international scoring in both games. However, without him, United still have a menacing-looking front line, one that includes Bruno Fernandes in the number 10 position – a player with more assists (12) than any other in the Premier League. Amad Diallo, often a wing-back under Amorim, is now a threat on the right wing with Matheus Cunha (two goals in two games) on the left last time out. Bryan Mbeumo will surely start, and will likely lead the line - even though Benjamin Sesko has four goals in four, including his late winner as a substitute against Fulham last weekend.

How did the 2-2 in N17 play out?

Given how much has changed tactically for United, it’s hard to know what to take from the meeting of these two sides in N17 a mere three months ago, a game that finished 2-2. Spurs were struggling to cut through, although two substitutes did help shift the momentum. At 1-0 down, Mathys Tel replaced Xavi Simons with 11 minutes to go and, not long after, the Frenchman swept in the equaliser. "Sometimes you're lucky," admitted Thomas Frank. "Every single time I take a decision to sub a player, it is only with one aim - to win the game." Wilson Odobert was brought on at half-time and, into the final 20 minutes, really came into his own, perpetually running past Amad Diallo who had been moved to wing-back. The goal for 2-1 was guided in by Richarlison’s head, via Odobert’s whipped shot from the edge of the area. The even-later concession of Matthijs de Ligt’s header stung, a moment that denied Spurs a standout home result of the season.

Which formation will Thomas Frank play?

Spurs had started with 3-4-3 for a fourth match in a row going into the game with Manchester City last week – but illness to Cristian Romero, off at half-time, forced Thomas Frank to switch to something resembling a 4-4-2. Pape Matar Sarr came on down the right, Xavi Simons moved even further out to the left, while Randal Kolo Muani and Dominic Solanke played up front together and got stuck into City’s two centre-backs as the team fought back for 2-2. It’s hard to know, therefore, given the 3-4-3 system worked well in wins over Dortmund and Frankfurt, what Thomas Frank will go for at Old Trafford. Micky van de Ven’s return, having trained this week, and Romero’s recovery, means there are further options to use that system. Regardless of shape, Spurs’ head coach knows what he wants in terms of energy and intensity. “What I liked of the second half is we were even more aggressive in the high pressure and finally the 50-50s landed a little bit more for us,” he explained. Solanke’s goal for 2-2 was a perfect example of that, with Conor Gallagher pouncing upon a loose second ball to race down the right and supply his fellow England international.

Legends on legends | Cliff Jones on 'Busby Babe' Duncan Edwards: "I'm sure he would have gone on to become the best player in the world" - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

As Manchester United mark the anniverary of the Munich Air Disaster - 6 February, 1958 - ahead of our Premier League clash at Old Trafford on Saturday (12.30pm UK), we've dipped into our archives to bring you the thoughts of one of our greats, Cliff Jones, on the shining light of the 'Busby Babes', Duncan Edwards.

Legends on Legends

Cliff Jones on Duncan Edwards, 2015

Cliff Jones believes the sky was the limit for the iconic figure of United's 'Busby Babes', Duncan Edwards, tragically killed following the Munich Air Disaster in February, 1958.

A key member of Bill Nicholson's 'glory glory' team of the early 1960s, Cliff actually played with Edwards in the British Army team in the mid-1950s.

Edwards was the player of his generation and only 21 when he was one of eight United players tragically killed in a plane crash on their way back from a European Cup tie against Red Star Belgrade. Edwards survived the crash on 6 February, 1958, but died in hospital 15 days later.

"I'm sure he would have gone on to become the best player in the world," said Cliff. "What a tragedy that he passed away aged just 21."

An all-action midfielder - playing left-half or inside-left - Edwards was the youngest player to play in the First Division when he made his debut for United aged 16 years, 154 days in 1953. He made his full England debut April, 1955 aged 18 years, 183 days - the youngest debutant after the Second World War, and a record that stood until Michael Owen's debut in 1998.

In just five years, Edwards made 177 appearances for United and helped them claim back-to-back titles in 1956 and 1957. He also won 18 England caps, scoring five goals.

"I didn’t play against the Busby Babes but I played with a lot of those players for the British Army team, the likes of Bobby Charlton, Eddie Colman and, of course, Duncan Edwards. Dave Mackay was also in that team as well, we had quite a side!" said Cliff, a legend here at Spurs with four major trophies and 159 goals in 378 appearances between 1958-68.

"Duncan had everything, the skill, the physique, the commitment, he was just a great, great player.

"Bobby Charlton always said the only player he ever felt in awe of during his career was Duncan Edwards. That’s coming from the great Bobby Charlton, who many see as the greatest player himself!"

Indeed, Sir Bobby's words provide an insight into how just how highly Edwards was regarded. "The best player I’ve ever seen and the best footballer I ever played with. The only player who ever made me feel inferior."
