Description

Kicking off their title defence in Group J, Argentina enjoyed a comfortable win over the north African nation, largely thanks to the brilliance of Lionel Messi, who scored his first-ever World Cup hat-trick.

Scoring three to become the joint-highest scorer in the history of the showpiece tournament, Inter Miami's Messi scored on 17, 60 and 76 minutes to seal all three points in Kansas.

Cristian started the game - the first he has since our 1-0 defeat to Sunderland in April - and played 80 minutes before being substituted for Nicolas Otamendi. It was his 52nd cap for his country. Meanwhile, Marcos Senesi was an unused substitute for Argentina.

Next up for Cristian and Marcos is the challenge of Kevin Danso's Austria on Monday 22 June (6pm UK).

Hanson joins from Villa - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

The 28-year-old Scotland international joins us from Aston Villa, having signed a long-term contract with the Club.

Kirsty said: "I'm absolutely delighted, it's an exciting time to be a part of this Club. I'm ready for a new challenge, and I'm always wanting to be better every single day. Martin (Ho), the Club, the staff, the players are at such an exciting point – and I want to be a part of that."

Our Head Coach Martin Ho said: "Kirsty is a player with proven quality in the WSL and someone who has consistently shown she can affect games at this level. She brings pace, energy, directness and real threat in the final third, but also the work ethic and intensity we want in our attacking players. She played a lot of her football last season as a centre forward, while also having the ability to play wide, and that versatility is really important for us in how we want to attack.

"We want players in the front line who can rotate, threaten different spaces, press with intensity and give us different solutions during games. Kirsty can stretch teams in behind, attack one-v-one, arrive in goal-scoring areas and also help connect the game when playing more centrally. That flexibility gives us more ways to hurt teams and allows us to be less predictable as an attacking team.

"I know Kirsty well from working with her previously, and I know the qualities she brings both as a player and as a person. She has strong experience in the league, international experience with Scotland and a clear hunger to keep pushing her game forward. We are delighted she has chosen to come to Tottenham Hotspur, and I’m excited to work with her again in an environment where we believe she can continue to develop, contribute and become an important player for this Club."

A direct and powerful forward who can play on either flank or as a number nine, Kirsty began her senior career at Sheffield FC before moving to Doncaster Rovers Belles and, after a season competing in the FA WSL Spring Series in 2017, she joined the newly-formed Manchester United side in the FA Women’s Championship.

Having helped United to promotion to the top flight, she became a regular member of their squad in the WSL, scoring her first goal in the competition in October, 2019, where she was also named the league’s Player of the Month.

Following two more seasons with the Red Devils, scoring six goals in the WSL, she joined Aston Villa on loan for the 2022/23 campaign, producing 18 goal contributions (eight goals and 10 assists) in 28 appearances, helping them achieve their best-ever finish in the competition to date and made the move permanent in the summer of 2023.

A prominent figure for Villa over the last two campaigns, Kirsty recorded one of the best goalscoring seasons in her career to date in 2025/26, netting an impressive 12 goals in the WSL to finish as the league’s third top goalscorer and won the WSL Goal of the Season award for her stunning strike against West Ham United in October.

She has represented Scotland across numerous age groups, and received her first call-up to the senior national team in November, 2019. Making her debut in a 5-0 victory over Albania that month, Kirsty started and was named Player of the Match, and opened her international account in a win at Cyprus in February, 2021. The forward has since earned 48 caps for Scotland, scoring six goals in total.

France forward Kylian Mbappe took centre stage in New Jersey, firing his side in front mid-way through the second half after controversially being denied a penalty, before wrapping up the win with a stunning long-range strike in added time.

Pape remained unused on the night but will hope to feature when his side takes on Norway in their second game of the tournament in the early hours of next Tuesday morning.

The central midfielder, 23, appeared in two of Senegal’s four games at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Having falling behind before the break to the middle eastern nation, Rodrigo and Uruguay powered through the hot and humid conditions of Miami, USA, to level the game late on through Maximilian Araujo and claim a point in their group stage opener.

The two-time former world champions pushed on to find a winner in the late stages but the man between the Saudi Arabia sticks, Mohammed Al-Owais, was in inspired form to deny the South Americans.

Lolo played the full 90 minutes for his country, earning his 74th cap as he plays in his sixth major international tournament and third World Cup.

Next up for Uruguay is the challenge of Cape Verde on Sunday 21 June - kick-off 11pm (UK).
