Tottenham Hotspur have been handed a huge injury blow ahead of a potential Europa League final clash with Manchester United later this month. Both sides have been dreadful in the Premier League this season but could yet win a European trophy and earn Champions League qualification to salvage their respective campaigns.
United have one foot in the Europa League final after they defeated Athletic Club 3-0 away from home in their semi-final first leg, while Tottenham possess a 3-1 lead over Bodo/Glimt ahead of their trip to Norway on Thursday night. While neither side is assured of a place in the final, the odds suggest it could be an all-English tie in Bilbao on Wednesday 21 May.
Whether or not Ange Postecoglou's side manage to get there could depend on how they cope with their latest injury setback, with Spurs set to be without a star performer for the final weeks of the season.
Tottenham handed huge injury blow
At the same time Manchester United lost 4-3 to Brentford on Sunday afternoon, Tottenham Hotspur drew 1-1 against West Ham in the Premier League. Both sides made changes to their line ups for the league matches, with their respective focus on the forthcoming Europa League second legs.
James Maddison scored one of the goals as Tottenham won their first leg against Bodo/Glimt in midweek, but he was withdrawn in the second half of the match because of an injury. The 28-year-old did not feature against West Ham at the weekend and Ange Postecoglou admitted it looked like a bad injury.
"It doesn't look great but we're just waiting for further information," the Tottenham boss said. "We'll just wait and see. Hopefully we'll probably get some clarity [on Monday]. It doesn't look promising but I'll just wait and see."
Dominic Solanke should be available for the second leg on Thursday night, while Tottenham captain Son Heung-min has also returned to training after almost a month on the sidelines. Lucas Bergvall is likely to miss the remainder of the season with an ankle injury. Maddison scored the winner on his previous return from injury as Tottenham beat United 1-0 in the Premier League back in February.
