Tottenham Hotspur are pushing to sign Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali in a £100m deal, according to reports.

The Italian, 26, has become one of the stars of Eddie Howe’s team and played 60 games for club and country in 2025/26.

Newcastle paid £55m for Tonali when they signed him from AC Milan in 2023, but reports suggest they could recoup almost double that fee if he leaves this summer.

Roberto De Zerbi pushing hard to seal Sandro Tonali deal

Spurs were at risk of relegation from the Premier League following a disastrous season, but Roberto De Zerbi arrived in March and kept them up.

The former Brighton & Hove Albion head coach took 11 points from the last seven games of the campaign as the North London club sealed survival on the final day - and he is already planning big changes this summer.

According to transfer expert Ben Jacobs, De Zerbi is driving Spurs’ efforts to sign fellow Italian Tonali, with the club set to bid an initial £85m rising to £100m with add-ons.

Jacobs adds that Tottenham are a ‘serious contender’ for Tonali despite being unable to offer European football next season, with the midfielder apparently open to a move.

He also reports that Spurs’ board have money to spend and are keen to make a statement signing, as they look to compete towards the top of the Premier League after successive 17th-place finishes.

Jacobs also reports that Arsenal and Manchester City are in the race for the Italy international, but Manchester United’s interest has cooled owing to the cost of the deal.

Transfer expert David Ornstein adds that Spurs have held positive talks with Tonali’s camp, although they are yet to make contact with Newcastle.

If the Italian departs, he would be the Magpies’ second big-money exit already this summer following Anthony Gordon’s £69m move to Barcelona.

Spurs, meanwhile, are clearly backing De Zerbi, with Brighton centre back Jan Paul van Hecke reportedly set to reunite with his former Seagulls boss in a £52m deal.

Tottenham Hotspur are close to finalising the signing of Brighton & Hove Albion’s Dutch defender Jan Paul van Hecke.

Van Hecke featured in the Netherlands’ first game of World Cup 2026, a dramatic 2-2 draw with Japan at AT&T Stadium, amid growing speculation about his future. After six seasons on the books at Brighton, the 26-year-old is reportedly on the cusp of joining Spurs.

According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, the clubs have now agreed a fee of £52 million after Van Hecke ‘had shown no interest in extending his terms’ at the Amex Stadium.

Jan Paul van Hecke bound for Spurs with fee agreed

An initial offer from the North London club was rebuffed but Van Hecke, whose contract expires next summer, will move to Spurs to reunite with former Seagulls manager Roberto De Zerbi.

The Italian steered Spurs to safety at the end of a dismal Premier League season and the club is now linked with a host of big-money statement signings as they seek to get back on track and back into Europe.

“Personal terms are not expected to be an issue for the centre-back, who is close to Tottenham head coach Roberto De Zerbi having worked together at the south-coast club between 2022 and 2024,” reports Ornstein.

“A move would continue a busy start to the transfer window for Spurs, who have already signed centre-back Marcos Senesi and left-back Andy Robertson, following the expiration of their contracts at Bournemouth and Liverpool respectively.”

Van Hecke will be in action again when the Netherlands take on Sweden in their second match at NRG Stadium on Saturday.

Brighton are already working on a replacement for Van Hecke, with another World Cup defender understood to be very much in the frame.

The teenager is reportedly a top target for Brighton but Ornstein has confirmed that a second offer worth £35 million has been rejected and the clubs coming to terms on Van Hecke is not linked to Vuskovic’s future.

It was reported on Tuesday that Spurs also want to sign Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United, though the Magpies’ £100 million price tag could be prohibitive.

In FourFourTwo’s opinion, acquiring Tonali this summer will be a stretch for Spurs, with that rumour believed to be driven by the player's agent, but the capture of Van Hecke is a forceful statement of intent in its own right.

Brighton will take the loss in stride. Former managers raiding their old club is nothing new for the Sussex club, who have seen a host of players and staff walk a well-trodden path to Chelsea in the last few years.

Selling well and identifying younger replacements is a huge part of the challenge for top Premier League clubs now. Brighton are demonstrably better at both than most.

Neal Maupay has ‘big hopes’ for Tottenham Hotspur as striker reveals Premier League ambition

Neal Maupay has ‘big hopes’ for Tottenham Hotspur as striker reveals Premier League ambition - FourFourTwo
Description

Twenty-nine year-old Neal Maupay worked under Roberto De Zerbi at Marseille and believes Spurs fans can be optimistic of a much better campaign in the Italian’s first full season in charge.

He told FourFourTwo: “I've got to say I've got big hopes for him and Tottenham next season. I've played for him for a season and a half, and I believe he will be a top manager in the world in a few years’ time. I'm convinced of that.

The interview with Neal was arranged by YRDS.

Neal Maupay is a fan of Spurs coach Roberto De Zerbi

“The hardest part for me was to keep Tottenham in the Premier League. Now he has the time to build the squad he wants, and get the injured players back. Having a full preseason of work will be hugely important too, because he’s very detailed and it takes time to implement his ideas.

“He's very detailed, and at Marseille it took us three or four months to start to be on the same page. Then all of a sudden, everything became easier for us as players.

“So, I think they will be a dangerous team next season. I don’t know to what extent, but I don’t see them having as tough a season as they just had.”

Maupay’s own future is up in the air at the moment after his loan spell at Sevilla came to an end, and the striker’s understanding is that the LaLiga club will not take up the option to turn this into a permanent deal.

“They [Sevilla] said they have a lot of things to fix, and Sergio Ramos was in discussions to buy the club.

“There's a lot going on behind the scenes, and I believe that they’re not planning to bring me back there or take the option [to buy].

“I’m still contracted with Marseille right now, but I don’t know what will happen. They just changed the sporting director and there is expected to be a new manager as well.

“One thing I can say is, I feel really good after my experience in Sevilla. I am in good shape, I feel confident and I'm still very, very, very hungry to play.

“And why not in England? I believe I’ve benefitted from my experience in France, and in Sevilla, and England is where I feel really at my best.

“The country, and the English culture is made for me really so, who knows?

“I would be more than happy to be back. But if I have to stay, Marseille is the biggest club in France, so we’ll see. I can't predict the future, but either way I'm hungry for more.”

As for the immediate future, the striker will have his eyes peeled on the World Cup and feels that reigning European champions Spain will be the ones to beat in North America.

“I see Spain as a really, really strong team. Maybe the best team in a tournament. I think the way that they've been playing for many years now means that everyone's on the same page.

“That's pretty hard to do with national teams, because they only get to see each other every couple of months and for just a few days. So it's not easy to build a chemistry, but they have that.

“The France squad is stacked. When you look at the names on paper, I would love us to win again. Big, big hugs go to [Kylian] Mbappe for the season he’s had at Real Madrid. It's been difficult for him, and he hasn't won any trophies. With that in mind, I think he’ll be very hungry to bring back another World Cup.

“And then there is England. Every World Cup and international tournament, you wonder if it’s coming home or not. I guess we have to see. There have been some strong players that have been left home.

“I think [Thomas] Tuchel is a good manager, and they will be a strong team as well.”

Keep, Loan, Sell: Interactive Tottenham Hotspur summer clearout tool allows Spurs fans to play sporting director - FourFourTwo
Description

Tottenham Hotspur finished 17th in the Premier League for the second season in a row and didn't even win the Europa League this time to take the edge off.

Spurs were dreadful in 2025-26, the on-field manifestation of disarray behind the scenes and some questionable managerial decisions. Take Harry Kane and Son Heung-min out of the equation and trouble isn't far away, it turns out.

With Daniel Levy also out at boardroom level, the sense of a club without a hand at the tiller has been unavoidable. Now, as sporting director Johan Lange works to put Spurs and new manager Roberto De Zerbi on a steadier footing, fans have the chance to do a better job.

Pick your own Spurs sales

Spurs will need to improve significantly to climb the Premier League in 2025-26 and that means clearing a few players out, maybe bringing in a decent transfer fee or two, as well as securing the right new acquisitions to equip De Zerbi.

Thanks to a new clearout tool from The Extra Inch, fans can simulate the summer by making a decision on every player in the Spurs squad. There are 40 in all and yes, FourFourTwo has had a go.

The clearout tool asks fans to place each player into one of five decision tiers: Keep, Loan, Listen to Offers, Find a Buyer and the brutally named Release/Get Rid. Each tier comes with a multiplier against the player's value.

Depending on the decision for each player, the tool will add or subtract from a tally of how much money Spurs could make or lose by flogging, loaning or releasing players, or indeed signing either of the players who spent the season on loan at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Without getting into the details, we obviously opted to sign Randal Kolo Muani and Joao Palhinha, leaving Theoretical Spurs FC with a summer deficit of €60 million.

But no matter: by listening to offers for a handful of players including James Maddison, Mohammed Kudus and Richarlison, we reckon there's €103 million to be made to offset that loss.

We won't be countenancing sales of any other top first team stars despite Spurs' horror season so that leaves €48 million to put towards the incoming transfer funds.

That's where things get really serious – too serious for us. If you're a Spurs fans with a keen eye for potential new signings, you can plug those in too.

Perhaps you'll complete the fake transfer of Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton & Hove Albion or finalise a fake deal for Manchester City full-back Savinho. Maybe Middlesbrough's Hayden Hackney takes your fancy.

If that necessitates selling a few of the big boys, so be it. There's no doubt the team needs a little surgery.

Everton emerge as shock frontrunners for Manchester United and Spurs transfer target: report

Everton emerge as shock frontrunners for Manchester United and Spurs transfer target: report - FourFourTwo
Description

Everton have reportedly made a play to hijack a deal for the highly-rated midfielder.

A report from the The Athletic indicates that the Merseysiders have stolen a march on their top-flight rivals, positioning themselves at the front of the race for Hackney's signature.

Securing the Middlesbrough skipper will require fending off competition from across the Premier League. The 23-year-old’s reputation has skyrocketed over the past year, culminating in him being named Championship Player of the Season.

Hayden Hackney to Everton?

That standout individual campaign has inevitably triggered top-flight scouting missions, with London pair Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace both credited with a long-standing interest in the England Under-21 international.

The most formidable obstacle to Everton’s pursuit, however, was widely expected to come from Old Trafford.

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick is thought to have made no secret of his desire to bring his former Middlesbrough prodigy to Old Trafford.

The tactical bond between the pair is considerable, with Carrick entrusted Hackney with a vital first-team role on Teesside, overseeing his development across 104 senior outings. Given that history, footballing circles heavily anticipated that Hackney would jump at the chance to accept a formal proposal from Man United to reunite with his former mentor.

Yet, Everton’s intervention has altered the transfer landscape. Middlesbrough’s promotion ambitions were dashed by a painful defeat to Hull City in the Championship play-off final, rendering Hackney’s departure a near certainty.

With the midfielder entering the final 12 months of his contract, the Boro hierarchy likely realise this window is their final opportunity to command a sizeable fee.

While Manchester United have broader squad rebuilding priorities and Spurs assess their options, Everton appear to have moved decisively. By offering a guaranteed, central role in their Premier League midfield, the Toffees could be on the verge of pulling off one of the summer’s most impressive transfer coups.

Roberto De Zerbi's first three Tottenham Hotspur signings revealed

Roberto De Zerbi's first three Tottenham Hotspur signings revealed - FourFourTwo
Description

Tottenham Hotspur are now busy planning ahead for another season in the Premier League after avoiding relegation on the final day of the 2025/26 campaign.

It's safe to say Roberto De Zerbi made a big impact after coming in as Tottenham manager, picking up 11 points from his seven matches in charge.

The Italian is seemingly eager to take the club to the next level now and ensure the struggles of this season are not repeated on his watch.

Tottenham Hotspur looking to raid Brighton for three players

Tottenham chiefs have promised big investment after the near-miss of relegation, and it looks like De Zerbi is keen to bring in some talent from Brighton to boost his Spurs squad.

That's according to a report from The Telegraph, in which Miguel Delaney earmarks Carlos Baleba, Jan Paul van Hecke, and goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen as Tottenham transfer targets.

It is thought the Brighton trio are at the top of De Zerbi's wishlist as he looks to improve in key areas that have troubled Spurs throughout this season.

While Antonin Kinsky has been a star performer since De Zerbi took over, the Italian is reportedly keen to find a ball-playing goalkeeper to suit his approach to building from the back. Verbruggen is seen as the ideal candidate in that department.

Spurs are already expected to sign Bournemouth's Marcos Senesi at the end of the season, and they're now hoping to pair him with van Hecke in the heart of De Zerbi's new look defence.

Tottenham bosses are well aware that signing all three players would be a difficult task to accomplish, particularly in the case of Baleba.

Manchester United have tracked Baleba for months now and are still thought to be favourites to land the midfielder, who Brighton apparently value at £100m.

The Lilywhites are also looking likely to sign Andy Robertson on a free transfer after his departure from Liverpool.

Man City winger Savinho is also a long-term target and could be allowed to leave The Etihad, depending on how the new manager there feels about the Brazilian.

Just how much activity we see in N17 this summer remains to be seen, but after the disappointment of this season, it's clear change is very much needed in the playing squad.

Roberto De Zerbi wants to reunite with controversial forward at Tottenham Hotspur: report

Roberto De Zerbi wants to reunite with controversial forward at Tottenham Hotspur: report - FourFourTwo
Description

De Zerbi took over the managerial reins at Tottenham earlier this year and previously worked with Greenwood during their time together in Ligue 1 with Olympique de Marseille.

Under De Zerbi’s tutelage in France, Greenwood found a rich vein of form following his permanent departure from Manchester United, establishing himself as one of the most productive forwards in the league.

Now, the Italian tactician is reportedly keen on bringing the 24-year-old back to the Premier League to spearhead his new-look Spurs attack, according to transfers journalist Nico Schira.

Roberto De Zerbi chases Spurs reinforcements

Any potential move for the forward is bound to ignite further friction between De Zerbi and sections of the Tottenham fanbase.

Following his appointment at the club, the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters' Trust and affiliated groups such as Women of the Lane publicly criticised the hiring, pointing to controversial comments the manager made during his time in France.

De Zerbi had previously defended Greenwood publicly, calling him a 'good guy' who had 'paid a heavy price.' The fan groups labeled those remarks 'ill-judged' and 'deeply offensive,' leading De Zerbi to issue a public clarification during his first club interview, where he apologised for causing offence and insisted he never intended to downplay the issue of violence against women.

Greenwood’s permanent exit from Old Trafford in 2024 brought an end to a lengthy period of scrutiny following his arrest in January 2022. He was charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, however, in February 2023, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) announced that all criminal charges against Greenwood had been dropped.

The CPS clarified that the decision was made due to the withdrawal of key witnesses and the emergence of new material, which combined meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of a conviction.

Despite the cessation of legal proceedings, Manchester United and the player mutually agreed that it was best for him to rebuild his career away from the club, leading to a loan spell at Getafe before his permanent transfer to Marseille.

With De Zerbi now looking to stamp his authority on the Tottenham squad, he has reportedly identified his former talisman as a target. While the prospective transfer will inevitably face intense scrutiny from supporters, De Zerbi remains a firm admirer of the forward's on-pitch capabilities as the north London club prepare for a busy summer.

Tottenham Hotspur chief breaks silence on relegation near-miss as owners make huge summer promise - FourFourTwo
Description

Tottenham Hotspur's top-flight status was retained on the final day of the Premier League season, bringing a torrid campaign to an end.

After months of suffering under the guidance of Thomas Frank, Tottenham found themselves in a very real relegation battle during the final months of the season.

It went right down to the wire, too, with a win over Everton last weekend being just enough to keep the Lilywhites out of the Premier League drop zone, at the expense of West Ham.

Tottenham Hotspur fans got the team over the line in relegation battle

Many have pointed to the influence of new manager Roberto De Zerbi as a key factor in Tottenham's survival, with the Italian guiding his team to three wins and two draws in seven matches to land in 17th place in the final table.

However, Spurs chief executive Vinai Venkatesham has made sure to thank the fans for their role in keeping the team afloat in what has been a woeful season for Tottenham.

In an interview with BBC Sport, Venkatesham said: "I understand the frustration around supporters. I think Tottenham supporters have been frustrated for some time. This is two 17th-place finishes in a row.

"It's clearly not good enough. I think that is rational, normal, sensible, and, is what we would expect from supporters."

Venkatesham also thanked the supporters for helping the players get "over the line" in the final run-in this season.

The Tottenham chief also praised De Zerbi, ranked at no.27 in FourFourTwo's list of the best Premier League managers ever, for his impact, adding: "It is hard to underestimate the scale of the challenge he walked into. And it's hard to describe what a significant impact he has had in the dressing room with all the players.

"I think he's an excellent coach, and we think that he plays the style of football that our supporters and the broader football public want to see."

Meanwhile, the Lewis family who own the club have now made huge promises the fans will be happy to hear amid great disillusionment in recent years.

A statement from the owners insisted this performance cannot be repeated, and added: "This will require investment — in our teams, the academy, our backroom functions and more — and we are fully committed to this

"We are not selling the club. We are all in. We are investing in it. You will see more of this in the coming months.

"We care deeply about Spurs. The rebuild the club needs, and you deserve, has begun. The change required is deep. It will take time and commitment, but change is happening."

Description

Tottenham Hotspur’s 2018/19 season was one of the most emotionally charged campaigns in the club’s recent history.

With Mauricio Pochettino having established his team as a top-four side and the club gearing up to move into their new stadium, Spurs would find themselves deep inside a Champions League run as the season reached its business end.

Following a last-16 stroll past Borussia Dortmund, Tottenham faced a domestic opponent in the quarter-finals when they took on Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, before a semi-final against Ajax and another all-English affair in the final against Liverpool.

Pochettino on Tottenham’s Champions League run

For Pochettino, Lucas Moura’s hat-trick goal against Ajax remains one of his best moments in football, but he is quick to acknowledge how his side got there.

“That [match against Ajax] was one of the greatest nights of my career, but without the previous tie against City, we wouldn’t have even got to that semi-final,” Pochettino tells FourFourTwo.

“We won the first leg 1-0 at home to City, in a game where Hugo Lloris saved a penalty from Sergio Aguero and Harry Kane injured his ankle.

“Guardiola had described Tottenham as “Harry Kane’s team”, which didn’t sit well with us because it seemed to diminish the work of the group.

“So playing the second leg at the Etihad without Kane and eliminating City carried enormous value for us.”

In Kane’s absence, Son Heung-min bagged a brace and Fernando Llorente scored what proved to be the decisive goal as Spurs’ 4-3 defeat on the night meant they progressed on away goals.

Once Ajax had been dealt with - again on away goals - Liverpool awaited in the final, with Jurgen Klopp’s side fresh from another dramatic tie, where the Reds came back from a 3-0 first-leg deficit to knock out Barcelona.

A second-minute Mohamed Salah penalty was bookended by a late Divock Origi strike, as Pochettino’s dream of claiming Spurs’ first European crown were dashed.

“We can’t regret anything,” Pochettino says as he looks back at the final in Madrid. “We played the way we did because we believed it was the best approach. After that, there are factors you can’t control.

“That handball by Moussa Sissoko wouldn’t be given as a penalty today, and it changed the script of the match because it put us at a disadvantage very early on.”

Tottenham Hotspur vs Everton: Premier League preview

Spurs have played some huge matches in the past and even in their recent history. A year ago, they won the final of the Europa League and secured a return to Champions League football.

The visit of Everton today is right up there with the biggest. Two Premier League ever-presents meet at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and De Zerbi's team remain at risk of relegation.

A draw will be enough to save Spurs from the drop and send West Ham United back into the Championship irrespective of what happens between the Hammers and Leeds United at the London Stadium.

On the day Arsenal lift the Premier League trophy south of the river, the capital is set to host four matches, and one or two railway stations are likely to be a bit lively.

For Everton, the stakes are frustratingly but perhaps mercifully low. The Toffees can still qualify for a European spot and will want to do their part even if their situation stretches the word 'possible' to its limits.

Everton's recent results don't suggest they're likely to turn up in North London today and turn over opponents fighting for their lives, but stranger things happen in football every day.

Mid-table might be a relief for Everton in the grand scheme of things but only temporarily. They evaded the threat of relegation in the recent past and a meaningful push for Europe has to be the next step.

For now, it's Tottenham's turn to make sure a miserable Premier League season doesn't end in disaster.
