Tottenham set to lose key star as Jose Mourinho plans raid on former side: report

Tottenham Hotspur are at risk of waving goodbye to one of their key players in the January transfer window, to former manager Jose Mourinho, no less.

Jose Mourinho has done little to keep himself out of the headlines since his appointment as Fenerbahce manager last summer, railing against refereeing and earning a red card and league sanctions inside the first six months.

Now, with transfer rumours swirling around him, Mourinho is reportedly planning to make an ambitious attempt to sign a senior player from Tottenham Hotspur, who he managed between 2019 and 2021.

Tottenham Hotspur: Jose Mourinho wants to make waves in the transfer window

According to a report from Gazzetta, Tottenham captain Son Heung-min is on Mourinho’s list of targets as he seeks to bridge the gap between Fenerbahce and Galatasaray.

The 32-year-old has struggled for form despite recent goals but Ange Postecoglou and Spurs won’t be willing to let him go without a fight. After making his name in Germany, Son came of age at Tottenham and has become an important player in North London. He has captained the team since the departure of Harry Kane to Bayern Munich.

Son joined Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015 and has played more than 300 Premier League games. He’s scored 125 league goals, tied with Nicolas Anelka as the 18th highest top flight scorer of the Premier League era. Mo Salah and Jamie Vardy are the only active Premier League players who’ve scored more.

His overall goal contributions in 2024-25 are tracking among his best seasons in England but Postecoglou’s aggressive attacking football is a more compelling reason for that than Son’s performances, which have come under fire as a result of Tottenham’s current winless run.

Fenerbahce, who are also reported to be interested in Roma’s Nicola Zalewski and Joao Felix of Chelsea as well as a host of other targets including Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne and Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof, are trailing in the title race despite the efforts of a number of familiar attacking names.

Captain Dusan Tadic and Sebastian Szymanski started their last game against Eyupspor. Edin Dzeko and on-loan winger Allan Saint-Maximin came off the bench, while Cenk Tosun was an unused substitute.

Mourinho, who is ranked at number 12 in FourFourTwo’s list of the greatest managers ever, is looking to add the Super Lig title to a bulging honours list that also includes a total of eight league championships in Portugal, England, Italy and Spain.

He won the Champions League with Porto and Inter Milan either side of his first spell in charge of Chelsea but is likely to require a play-off to take Fenerbahce into the knockout phase of the Europa League this season.

Fenerbahce take on Hatayspor on Sunday. The crucial meeting with Galatasaray will take place at the end of February.

Tottenham Hotspur lining up January deal for England international: report

Tottenham Hotspur have scored more goals than every team in the Premier League apart from Liverpool yet they sit in the bottom half of the table at the halfway point of the season.

In truth, Tottenham have become notoriously unreliable. Four defeats and just one win in December put Ange Postecoglou’s dogmatic approach back in the spotlight. They averaged two goals conceded in the last seven games of 2024.

They scored three times in consecutive home games and lost both. Even Big Ange might be minded to tighten things up after that and Tottenham are reportedly turning to an England international abroad to bolster his defensive options.

Tottenham moving for former Everton defender

According to transfer market expert Rudy Galetti, Spurs are interested in bringing Ben Godfrey back to the Premier League. Godfrey moved from Everton to Serie A outfit Atalanta last summer but has been a mostly unused substitute for the Italian league leaders.

Galetti has reported that Spurs are lining up a bid to cut short Godfrey’s time in Italy, with Wolves apparently also keen on the 26-year-old central defender.

Godfrey joined the Toffees from Norwich City in 2021 and posted consistently good defensive numbers in the Premier League. He played twice for England in the lead-up to the delayed European Championship in 2021.

There’s a short-term issue at the back for Spurs as well as a requirement for stability. Injury problems for Cristian Romero, Ben Davies and Micky van de Ven make Godfrey an attractive prospect.

Postecoglou and Spurs have had to deal with an injury crisis this season. The manager has been reluctant to blame injuries for the team’s dipping form but remains confident that consistency will come when players return.

In FourFourTwo's view, this is a move that could work well for all parties - Godfrey would make a return to the Premier League with the opportunity for more minutes, while Tottenham would boost their backline without having to fork out a heap of cash.

Tottenham report: Dejan Kulusevski in talks over shock exit

Tottenham star Dejan Kulusevski could be about to leave the club, in a surprise exit that would rock the Lilywhites.

Despite the north Londoners sitting 11th in the table at the turn of 2025, Kulusevski has been one of Ange Postecoglou's better players in the first half of the season. The Swede was outstanding in the 4-0 win against Manchester City and has been preferred to James Maddison in the No.10 role of late.

But with Tottenham stuttering this term, Kulusevski is reportedly interested in a change of scenery – with contacts already made over his next move.

Tottenham face a fight to keep Dejan Kulusevski, with the groundwork already made over a move

Tottenham brought Kulusevski to north London in the January transfer window two years ago, initially on loan. The 24-year-old was an instant hit, helping Spurs finish above Arsenal and qualify for the Champions League, joining permanently that summer.

But now, a loan move with an option for the winger to leave permanently is being discussed, with Brennan Johnson frequently taking Kulusevski's place at right-wing under Postecoglou and the player's own frustrations leading to openness to move.

A report from MilanLive states that legendary striker-turned-advisor at Milan, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, has begun sounding out Kulusevski over a return to Serie A.

Ibrahimovic's countryman broke through at Atalanta in Italy before spells at Juventus and Parma. Now, Milan are seriously weighing up a move provided they can offload Nigerian attacker Samuel Chukwueze first.

The Rossoneri are said to want to sign Kulusevski on loan with an obligation to buy this summer, with Tottenham said to be demanding €50 million.

Though the lure of European football could prove difficult to resist for the player, in FourFourTwo's view, this may well be a difficult transfer for Milan to engineer.

With a contract running until 2027, Spurs are firmly in control of the player's future and will drive a hard bargain, as they've demonstrated in the past when interest has been shown in the likes of Harry Kane.

‘People mention my goal in this game more than any other. I feel the love from both Arsenal and Spurs fans, which is rare, so there wasn’t any needle for me’: Former Gunners and Tottenham midfielder d

Arsenal and Tottenham are sworn enemies, as the few players to have crossed the divide will testify.

But while Sol Campbell is still referred to as 'Judas' at Tottenham for his decision to leave Spurs for Arsenal in 2001, one player who doesn't have it quite as bad is David Bentley - even after he scored a wonder volley against Arsenal from all of 40 yards for their bitter rivals.

Having come through the Arsenal academy, Bentley went on to make nine appearances for the first team, though just one of those came in the Premier League. With opportunities limited, he went on loan to both Norwich and Blackburn, before making a permanent switch to the latter side in 2006.

Arsenal stung by 40-yard belter from Tottenham's Bentley

After a few successful seasons at Ewood Park, Bentley made clear his desire to leave. A return to north London was on the cards - but to Spurs, rather than his boyhood side Arsenal. Signed in a deal worth £17m in the summer of 2008, it took until October 29, 2008, before he scored his first goal for Tottenham.

But it came against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, from more than 40 yards out as the opening goal in a frenetic 4-4 draw.

“I think people mention my goal in this game more than any other – especially Spurs fans," Bentley tells FourFourTwo. "It was my first North London Derby in Tottenham colours and one that held special significance for me, having spent time on either side of the fence.

"To score like that – a nice flick up and then a 40-yard volley – was really amazing. I love both clubs to this day. Obviously I came through the ranks at Arsenal and will always be grateful for the opportunities I got there, but Spurs invested a lot in me."

Despite having the potential to cause such great controversy, Bentley highlights that he is still received well at both Arsenal and Tottenham.

"I feel the love from both sets of supporters, which is rare, so there wasn’t any needle for me," he adds. "I just wanted to do well.”

Who is the most expensive Tottenham Hotspur player of all time?

Description

Tottenham have been famously (or infamously) rather judicious with their spending under Daniel Levy - and when they have deigned to go big on a signing, it has not always delivered the desired results.

Spurs have had some success storied among their big signings, but a lot of their best performers in recent times have either been homegrown stars - most notably Harry Kane, who is ranked at No.7 in FourFourTwo's list of the best Premier League strikers of all time - or astute bits of scouting secured for less-than-monstrous fees.

Here's a look at the very patchy record Tottenham Hotspur have with their biggest-money signings.

Who is Tottenham Hotspur's most expensive ever signing?

Richarlison had been Everton's undisputed star for four years, hitting double figures for goals in each of his four seasons at Goodison Park. At 25 years old in summer 2022, he should have been just hitting his peak.

Unfortunately for Tottenham, the Brazilian was unable to replicate that kind of form in his first season at the club, struggling with injuries and publicly falling out with Antonio Cotnte (which isn't difficult).

The Italian's departure did not immediately help, but after struggling with mental health issues and more injuries problems, Richarlison hit a brief run of excellent form that included nine goals in just eight Premier League games. Since then, it's been pretty dry again.

Who held the Tottenham Hotspur transfer record before Richarlison?

Ah, geez, it's Tanguy Ndombele, who for our money (or rather, for Tottenham's) ranks as Spurs' worst-ever signing.

Ndombele was supposed to be the marquee signing of summer 2019 following Spurs' heartbreak in the Champions League final, but Mauricio Pochettino's swift departure meant he quickly fell out of favour and ended up spending most of his town out of the side or out on loan.

Dominic Solanke's arrival in summer 2024 equalled the amount Spurs paid for Ndombele, but of course Richarlison had already set the bar for the record that little bit higher.

Davinson Sanchez being the previous club record signing doesn't feel a huge amount better. He wasn't on Ndombele levels, of course, but he was hardly Virgil van Dijk for the club either, and spent a lot of his time at the club going in and out of the side.

The club have breached the £40m mark ten times, with Leeds United youngster Archie Gray the latest player Spurs have splashed out at least that figure to sign.

Being Tottenham, the full top ten contains a real mixed bag of players who have been genuinely good investments, others who have been total flops, and a few who sit somewhere in between.

Like a lot of the rest of the Premier League, it's heavily 2020s-centric, too, reflecting the huge inflation in transfer fees over the past five years or so.

Whatever Tottenham Hotspur may lack in recent silverware, they certainly aren’t deficit in goalscoring ability.

Some of the Premier League’s most renowned strikers have walked through the doors of White Hart Lane and the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but it’s not only no.9s who have provided the goals.

Ange Postecoglou is ending 2024 under substantial pressure at the north London side, a fact likely not helped by the fact he entered just as razor-sharp marksman Harry Kane was heading for his flight to Germany.

But it’s not all bad: the Aussie does still have one of the top 20 at his disposal as we speak.

The man at the top provided 213 Premier League goals to Spurs over the course of his time with the club, but those 20-plus-goal wonders at the base of this list may be a little more obscure.

Tottenham home kit for 2025/26: Everything we know so far

The Tottenham 2025/26 home kit is still a long way from being released by Nike, but some details have started to emerge in recent times.

After a few seasons of fairly boring, plain designs, Tottenham's home kit this term has been a little more interesting with navy sleeves and subtle detailing - though a lot more could be done to spice it up.

Fortunately, there's potential that Tottenham could look quite different in 2025/26, with the latest information on their new home shirt coming to light...

Manchester City home kit for 2025/26 prediction leaked

According to Footy Headlines, the Tottenham 2025/26 home shirt could see Nike go for a design that is a lot more interesting than in recent years. While the 2021/22 home kit was, essentially, just a plain white shirt with the Spurs crest stuck on, in 2025/26 Tottenham fans might actually have something enjoyable to watch their team play in.

The official colours are set to be 'White, Lt Iron Ore and Binary Blue', which throws two accents into the mix, rather than just the one that is used on the 2024/25 kit.

Lt Iron Ore has been used by Nike in the past, and is essentially a light grey that is set to provide plenty of contrast to the general white base - certainly a welcome addition for Spurs supporters.

Footy Headlines does make clear that the prediction for how the shirt will look is "highly speculative", though the colours are official.

Clear details on how Tottenham's 2025/26 home shirt will look at this stage are difficult to ascertain right now, but the colours give a good indication as to how the shirt could look.

Nike used yellow sparingly a few seasons ago for the home shirt, but generally just two colours feature on the Spurs home kits - seeing three, in whatever capacity that might be, is a change for the good, in FourFourTwo's view.

"Are you not entertained? What do you want?" Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou hits back after dramatic 4-3 win

Submitted by daniel on

Description

They're the Premier League’s most thrilling team for the neutral but most of their supporters would sacrifice a little entertainment to be a few places higher in the league table.

Tottenham Hotspur have turned chaos into an art form under Ange Postecoglou this season and the Australian head coach is sticking to his guns despite his tactical approach coming under fire.

Spurs knocked out Manchester United courtesy of a frantic 4-3 win on Wednesday to reach a Carabao Cup semi-final against Liverpool and Postecoglou was bullish about his way of doing things.

Ange Postecoglou isn’t budging on Tottenham’s playing style

The outcome of Postecoglou’s tactics would have most Premier League managers tearing their hair out. They average almost six shots on target per match, more than every other team in the league. They’re lodged in mid-table but have a better goal difference than everyone but the top two. Only Chelsea have scored more goals.

Their potency in attack is matched by their habit of getting turned over. Postecoglou plays a game of high risk for high reward and has moved to defend his philosophy in the face of increasing scrutiny.

“Are you not entertained?” he asked Sky Sports after 90 mind-boggling minutes against Manchester United. “What do you want? Do you want a scrambling 1-0? I know the studio are probably going on a meltdown over my lack of tactics but you know what, I love the fact that we just go out there and take it to the opposition.

“In terms of the mentality of the boys, I love it. I love football and I love watching teams that go out there and entertain.

“Obviously we want to be successful as well and we won’t be if we, you know, make things difficult for ourselves like we did tonight. But you balance that up with the situation we’re in right now, ten first team players out, I keep saying it and I don’t think it’s registered with people but that’s okay.”

Postecoglou himself continues to be good value. Managers and head coaches in the Premier League are pragmatists more often than not, and those who seek to play entertaining football to the potential detriment of results tend to get caught out eventually.

But not always. Postecoglou believes he has the players at his disposal to make it work when Spurs are back to full strength, and some of their statement wins this season suggest he might be right.

Spurs will be in action this weekend, taking on league leaders Liverpool at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the last Premier League fixture before Christmas.
