Is Manchester City star Rayan Ait-Nouri injured? Premier League injury update - FourFourTwo
Description

Rayan Ait-Nouri was taken off during the first half of Man City’s 2-0 defeat at home to Tottenham on Saturday afternoon.

Ait-Nouri, a £36.3m summer signing, has started the season brightly in City colours and played an important part on the opening weekend, helping his new side cruise to a 4-0 win over former club Wolves.

His home debut lasted less than 25 minutes, however, as he was replaced by Nathan Ake following what looked to be an ankle injury. Tottenham went on to steal all three points, thanks to goals from Brennan Johnson and Joao Palhinha.

Is Man City’s Rayan Ait-Nouri available this weekend?

Ait-Nouri, who was a standout performer last season before his switch to City, has been brought in as a specialist left-back.

His signing should allow star defender Josko Gvardiol to return to his preferred position in central defence, once fit. The Algerian will have some big boots to fill, however, as Gvardiol recently appeared at no.2 in FourFourTwo’s list of the best left-backs in the world right now.

The time frame on Ait-Nouri’s injury isn't yet clear, but Pep Guardiola was hopeful in the aftermath of the clash with Spurs that the defender could recover fairly quickly.

“I didn’t speak with the doctors yet. It looks like the ankle, but I didn’t speak with the doctors yet. We have seven days, hopefully it can be recovered” he said in his post-match press conference.

If City’s game this weekend against Brighton comes too soon for Ait-Nouri, he’ll likely be back in contention following the international break. Gvardiol, however, could return, as could stopper Ederson.

Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea are set to battle it out for Xavi Simons' signature during the final days of the summer transfer window.

Simons has been granted leave by club side RB Leipzig and reportedly travelled to England ahead of completing a transfer to the Premier League.

Spurs are in a race against time to persuade Simons the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is where he should commit his future, though, as Chelsea are also known to be interested in the attacking midfielder.

Xavi Simons granted leave to discuss potential Spurs transfer

According to German outlet BILD, Simons is in London after being 'released until further notice for future discussions'.

Simons is renowned as one of Europe's most highly-rated goalscoring midfielders after spells with PSV Eindhoven and Bundesliga outfit Leipzig.

The 22-year-old spent nine years in Barcelona's academy before a 2019 move to Paris Saint-Germain.

Due to a complex and competitive first-team pathway at Parc des Princes, Simons joined Dutch side PSV in a permanent transfer ahead of the 2022-23 season but after scoring 22 times in 48 appearances, returned to PSG after the French champions triggered a reported €6 million buy-back clause.

Simons was subsequently sent on loan to Leipzig for the 2023-24 campaign where he thrived in a more competitive domestic division, hitting double figures for the season. He would go one better the following year, finding the net 11 times, after sealing a permanent switch to the Red Bull-owned club.

A Dutch international with five goals and nearly 30 senior caps to his name, Simons is highly regarded in elite European football circles.

He is valued at €70m by Transfermarkt, but may be available for less than that figure after Leipzig missed out on European qualification last season. Additionally, Simons' contract in East Germany expires in less than two years.

Tottenham given 'green light' to sign French attacker: report

Tottenham given 'green light' to sign French attacker: report - FourFourTwo
Description

Tottenham Hotspur have been handed a green light to make their next signing.

Spurs have enjoyed a thoroughly impressive start to the Thomas Frank reign with a 100 per cent record in the Premier League and an encouraging performance in their Super Cup loss – all with Frank's side still settling, with injuries, rotation and transfers playing their part in an ever-changing XI.

But with Deadline Day now looming, Tottenham can finalise their squad ahead of the new season and bring in much-needed reinforcements that can help the Dane compete across four fronts.

Tottenham are closing in on a move for a standout French star

Tottenham's desire for a playmaker is clear: the Lilywhites were beaten by Arsenal in their move for Eberechi Eze, with the Hale End academy product choosing to return to N5 over N17.

Spurs' move for Morgan Gibbs-White also failed to materialise, with Frank still in the hunt for a creative no.10 who can replicate the kind of output that the side have lost following James Maddison suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in preseason.

TEAMtalk now reports that the North Londoners are on “the brink of a blockbuster double attacking signing”, with Monaco star Maghnes Akliouche said to be a leading target alongside Savinho of Manchester City.

Football Insider‘s Pete O’Rourke has claimed that the principality outfit will accept a bid of around £47.5 million for the Frenchman, who can play in a number of positions behind the striker.

FourFourTwo understands that while TEAMtalk have labelled this as a “green light”, club-to-club negotiations may well complicate any move, with Spurs unwilling to pay a premium for a 23-year-old untested outside France and Monaco wanting to extract the maximum they possibly can for a jewel in their side.

Tottenham are also said to be in the market for another winger and another centre-back, facing hurdles in their moves for two signings.

TEAMtalk claims that Tottenham and City remain £10m apart in their valuation of Savinho, with Football365 adding that Morgan Rogers is on the radar as a backup – while another Gunners gazump appears to be on the cards in defence, with Piero Hincapie seemingly the second Spurs target in a week to be heading to the Emirates Stadium instead, as per transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, writing in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Manchester City hit the summer transfer window hard and early. By the time they arrived at Molineux for their first game of the Premier League season against Wolverhampton Wanderers, they were ready.

A 4-0 away win inspired by a sensational debut performance from Tijjani Reijnders was an ominous sight for City's title rivals and also for Tottenham Hotspur, City's first visitors to the Etihad Stadium in 2025-26.

Spurs started with a 3-0 win of their own. Under new manager Thomas Frank, they should be a different proposition for City.

Man City vs Spurs: Premier League preview

Man City sit at the top of the embryonic Premier League table thanks to a lightning start and Pep Guardiola will be determined to keep them there after a disappointing 2024-25.

He'll believe the club's owners have equipped him with a team capable of doing so. After recovering to finish third in the Premier League season, City quickly moved to bring in Reijnders, Rayan Cherki and Rayan Ait-Nouri.

With the likes of Omar Marmoush and Nico Gonzalez snapped up in the middle of last season and new summer signings swiftly sorted, City planned to hit the ground running this term and did exactly that.

Wolves shouldn't be pushovers this season but Spurs represent an altogether sterner test. Frank inherited a squad bound for the Champions League after winning the Europa League last season and has been armed with talented additions including Mohammed Kudus and Joao Palhinha.

The Spurs team that beat Burnley was without departed talisman Son Heung-min and injured attacking midfielder James Maddison, but it was the familiar figure of Richarlison who did the damage.

He scored Spurs' first two goals of 2025-26, both assisted by former West Ham United man Kudus, but looked likely to be moved on to make way for Eberechi Eze before Arsenal stole in to pick up the England international while Spurs were on hold.

Former Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou was in charge of a capable squad. They proved as much in Europe. Even with one or two changes, Frank's tactical approach should get more from them domestically.

With Brennan Johnson and Kudus flanking a striker, they should be able to create chances this season. Only Liverpool and Manchester United produced more shots on target last weekend.

In their second game of the season, Spurs will be up against the team with the best overall pass completion rate in the opening fixtures. Erling Haaland also scored twice, serving notice on a league that might just have forgotten about him ever so slightly last season.

City won the last meeting between these two teams but were beating 4-0 on their own turf last season as Postecoglou's Spurs ran roughshod over the champions, aided by an early two-goal lead in November.

Man City vs Spurs: Expected line-ups

FourFourTwo's prediction

Man City 2-0 Spurs

Spurs started in impressive fashion last weekend but arguably look a little light in midfield when it comes to tough away games against in-form title contenders already among the goals.

Is Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol injured? Premier League injury update - FourFourTwo
Description

Josko Gvardiol was injured for Manchester City’s Premier League opener against Wolves.

Pep Guardiola’s Man City surged to a 4-0 victory at Mollenieux, with goals from new signings Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki adding to a clinical brace from striker Erling Haaland.

Gvardiol, whose injury has been described as a ‘knock’, also missed City’s pre-season victory over Italian side Palermo in early August. But will he feature in Manchester City's XI against Tottenham this weekend?

Is Manchester City’s Josko Gvardiol available this weekend?

Signed from RB Leipzig in 2023, Gvardiol has operated at left-back for the majority of his time at City and is considered one of the best in the position when fully fit.

The summer arrival of specialist fullback Rayan Ait-Nouri, however, means that Gvardiol will likely revert to his preferred position in central defence upon returning to the side.

Unfortunately, City fans may have to wait a little longer to see Gvardiol back in a blue shirt.

It looks as though Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off against Tottenham will come too soon for the Croatia international, with Guardiola hinting that he is not yet ready to feature.

“[Mateo] Kovacic is not ready, Josko [Gvardiol] is not ready, the others are”, the City boss said before his team's game against Wolves last time out.

Interestingly, Gvardiol has been included in the Croatia squad for the upcoming international break, suggesting that the talented defender is nearing full fitness.

Although undisclosed, Gvardiol’s injury doesn’t appear to be too serious.

Tottenham working on details for spectacular Rodrygo transfer - as revenge for Eberechi Eze hijack: report

Tottenham working on details for spectacular Rodrygo transfer - as revenge for Eberechi Eze hijack: report - FourFourTwo
Description

Tottenham Hotspur are plotting revenge over Arsenal for the Eberechi Eze hijack – by taking a player they want to sign.

Recently Tottenham were described as having a free run to sign Eze, with their North London rivals said to be out of the picture to sign the England international – though the Crystal Palace star reported for training on Wednesday ahead of Conference League duty this Thursday.

In a huge twist, however, Arsenal last night agreed terms to sign former Hale End academy graduate Eze in a late steal, as per David Ornstein of The Athletic.

Tottenham Hotspur steaming ahead to sign major Arsenal target

The Eze debacle leaves Spurs manager Thomas Frank without a creative spark in the absence of James Maddison, who is ruled out for much of the season with an anterior cruciate ligament injury, and Dejan Kulusevski, who also has a knee injury that Frank has spoken of not wanting to “put a timeline” on the return of.

On top of this, club captain Son Heung-min departed for Major League Soccer over the summer, leaving Spurs light in the left-wing area – opening the door for a potential superstar to arrive in the shape of Rodrygo, who is ranked at no.6 in FourFourTwo's list of the best right wingers in the world right now.

According to Thursday’s edition of Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, via Sport Witness, however, the Lilywhites may look to address both areas with the signing of Rodrygo.

FourFourTwo understands that the Gunners were extremely keen on an ambitious move to bring the Brazilian to North London in their own quest for an upgrade on the left-wing, as incoming Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso looks to put his stamp on Los Blancos.

Defensa Central claims now that Spurs are the only option for Rodrygo, stating that Real would be keen on letting the 24-year-old go if the North Londoners cover his full salary.

It's also reported that Tottenham and Real Madrid are considering a purchase option.

In FourFourTwo's opinion, these rumours make sense – but given that the Eze rejection has only happened in the past 18 hours, pivoting to Rodrygo quite so quickly would be out of character for chairman Daniel Levy.

While it's likely that dialogue will reopen between the two clubs over a move, this is a saga that will likely drag on until the end of the transfer window, given the expense involved in the deal and Tottenham's stance of not wanting to overpay for major targets.

Tottenham accelerating sudden move to sign rivals' captain: report

Tottenham accelerating sudden move to sign rivals' captain: report - FourFourTwo
Description

Tottenham Hotspur are gearing up to close a deal for a rival side's captain – despite being snubbed by Marc Guehi.

The England international is the subject of interest from both Tottenham and Liverpool but recent reports suggest that Guehi is set to turn down Spurs in favour of a move to Merseyside.

Undeterred, however, the Lilywhites are pushing ahead with their next deal, which incidentally, involves another London club's captain.

Tottenham looking to snare a captain from their London rivals

Thomas Frank has enjoyed an auspicious start in N17, fashioning a 3-5-2 formation to put in a fantastic performance against Paris Saint-Germain in the Super Cup before returning to a back four and comfortably humbling Burnley in the Premier League opener.

Spurs have signed the likes of Mohammed Kudus and are on the brink of bringing in Eberechi Eze – but yet another star from a London club has now been linked with a move.

Caught Offside claims that Brentford captain Nathan Collins is now being targeted by Frank, as he looks to improve his side defensively.

The County Kildare-born defender has impressed hugely at the Gtech since arriving from Wolverhampton Wanderers two years ago and was handed the armband this summer by incoming manager Keith Andrews.

Spurs have tied Cristian Romero to a long-term contract and over the summer, triggered the buy option in Kevin Danso's loan move – but after suffering an injury crisis last season that saw Archie Gray fill in at centre-back, the club are keen to strengthen further defensively.

The report names Liverpool as another suitor, though FourFourTwo understands that with the Republic of Ireland star under contract until 2029, the Bees will demand a huge fee to part with their skipper after losing previous captain Christian Norgaard and top scorer Bryan Mbeumo over the summer, along with Frank and most likely, Yoane Wissa.

Spurs are also said to be in the market for a left-winger, given that they are yet to replace Son Heung-min, who left the club for Major League Soccer this summer.

Eberechi Eze training ground bombshell after Tottenham 'fee agreed'

Eberechi Eze training ground bombshell after Tottenham 'fee agreed' - FourFourTwo
Description

Crystal Palace man Eberechi Eze is reportedly on his way to Tottenham Hotspur for £60 million.

It was alleged earlier this week that a fee had been agreed after talks took place between Palace chief Steve Parish and Spurs' chairman Daniel Levy.

The move does not appear as advanced as many of a Tottenham persuasion might hope, though, after images of Eze training at Crystal Palace's South London base emerged on Wednesday morning.

Eberechi Eze still in Crystal Palace training despite Spurs move

The Eagles hosted an open training session ahead of their UEFA Europa Conference League qualifier against Fredrikstad FK on Thursday evening.

Eze was present for the session despite rumblings over his Palace future.

The England international is into the final two years of his deal at Selhurst Park and is open to a move this summer, according to various reports.

However, the midfielder has not pushed for a move, unlike other prominent Premier League players, nor has he gone on strike to force through a transfer, even after the expiry of a release clause in his Palace contract.

In FourFourTwo's opinion, Eze will still get his move to Spurs this summer, but talk of a deal being agreed is a little premature at this stage.

Football transfers tend to move very quickly during the final stages of a deal, therefore over the next 10 days, there will come a point where Eze is no longer involved with Palace on a day-to-day basis.

That is likely to come once a fee has been agreed and the player is granted leave to undergo a medical with Thomas Frank's side.

Tottenham report: Spurs are now unopposed in pursuit of £60m Arsenal transfer target

Tottenham report: Spurs are now unopposed in pursuit of £60m Arsenal transfer target - FourFourTwo
Description

Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing a £60 million deal for Eze who is widely expected to leave Selhurst Park this summer.

Arsenal were reportedly interested in acquiring the playmaker earlier in the window but it now appears Tottenham have a clear run at the 27-year-old, per the latest reports.

The Athletic claim Spurs are unopposed in their pursuit of the Palace man, who saw a goal harshly ruled out for the Eagles on the opening weekend of the season against Chelsea.

Tottenham are in a 'one-horse race' for Eberechi Eze

Eze is, unlike Palace teammate Marc Guehi, contracted to the club beyond next summer, which means an imminent sale is not essential to maximise the player's value.

Nevertheless, there is sufficient interest in doing a deal from Spurs' side and initial talks are understood to be underway between Palace chief Steve Parish and Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy.

Eze's reported £68m release clause has now expired, according to various reports, but Spurs are said to be negotiating an initial £55m fee with £5m in future add-ons.

Palace could also lose skipper Guehi in a deal worth £40m, after the defender appeared to fall out with head coach Oliver Glasner following their 0-0 draw with Chelsea.

In FourFourTwo's opinion, signing Eze at £60m would represent excellent business for Spurs, who have looked impressive in their two competitive fixtures of the season so far.

While the North London club did lose out in the UEFA Super Cup to Paris Saint-Germain having led for much of the game, they will not come up against that calibre of opponent week-in, week-out in the Premier League.

The manner in which Spurs saw off Burnley in their season opener suggests they will be a force to be reckoned with this season, even more so if they manage to land Eze from London rivals Palace.

Eze is expected to feature on Thursday evening as the Eagles take on Fredrikstad FK in UEFA Conference League qualifying.

Liverpool have agreed terms with Marc Guehi, as snub emerges before deal is completed: report

Liverpool have agreed terms with Marc Guehi, as snub emerges before deal is completed: report - FourFourTwo
Description

Liverpool have agreed terms with Marc Guehi to become their 10th signing of the summer.

It's been a frenetic transfer window for Liverpool boss Arne Slot, who has welcomed Jeremie Frimpong, Armin Pecsi, Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Freddie Woodman, Hugo Ekitike, Will Wright and Giovanni Leonni to the Premier League champions.

Having smashed the British transfer record for Wirtz, upgraded their two full-backs, added a wonderkid defender and signed three goalkeepers, there may yet be further Anfield activity.

Liverpool close to Marc Guehi deal – with one obstacle to complete

Liverpool left it late to beat Bournemouth 4-2 on Friday night in the opening night of their title defence, in a game that suggested they may need adaptation defensively – something Alisson himself confirmed with comments.

The champions have spent close to £300 million already this summer, offsetting that spend with significant sales, but there's optimism that Guehi could be closed for a bargain deal, even before a potential move for Alexander Isak.

TEAMtalk have provided a report on Guehi's move to Merseyside, noting that personal terms have been agreed and that Liverpool and Crystal Palace are just £5m out from one another in terms of their respective valuations for the England international.

The report adds, meanwhile, that Tottenham Hotspur have offered Guehi terms, described by journalist Paul O’Keefe on Last Word on Spurs as “very, very, very good” – but that Guehi is set to snub the Lilywhites in favour of the Reds.

“The word from within Palace is saying that it’s Liverpool or bust,” O'Keefe said, adding, “But I think it might be a case with Marc that if he doesn’t get his Liverpool move, then he’ll stay the season and see it out, then go on a free.”

FourFourTwo understands that Arsenal and Newcastle United also expressed interest in Guehi prior to signing Cristhian Mosquera and Malick Thiaw, respectively, with the price quoted for a player with a year left on his contract deemed too expensive for each.

Liverpool, however, run the risk of losing Ibrahima Konate to Real Madrid with the Frenchman stalling on extending his deal – and Guehi could establish himself as a first-choice partner either alongside Konate or as a long-term heir for 34-year-old Virgil van Dijk.
