Cristian Romero calls out Tottenham Hotspur paymasters and is summoned into meeting with bosses

Description

Cristian Romero accused a mystery Tottenham Hotspur figure of only showing up “when things are going well, to tell a few lies” in a now-edited social media post.

It followed Spurs’ damaging 3-2 loss to Bournemouth on Wednesday evening, administered by a stoppage-time Antoine Semenyo goal.

Micky van de Ven and Joao Palhinha were the first to show their frustration, getting into what looked like a heated discussion with their travelling fans at the side of the pitch.

Cristian Romero calls out “lies” from Tottenham Hotspur hierarchy

It didn’t end there, however, with an unhelpful image of head coach Thomas Frank emerging later in the evening of him inexplicably sipping from an Arsenal-branded coffee cup, at Bournemouth’s Vitality Stadium.

The cherry on the unpalatable cake came at around midnight following the game, with Romero turning to his five-million-strong Instagram following to vent his frustration.

“At times like this, it should be other people coming to speak,” a section of the original caption read. “But they don’t – as has been happening for several years now.

“They only show up when things are going well, to tell a few lies.”

The centre-back has since edited the post, removing “to tell a few lies” but leaving the bulk of the message live, which was liked by team-mates Richarlison and Pedro Porro.

Speaking in a press conference the next day, Frank said: “He’s still a young leader. A lot of things he’s done well on and off the pitch, I’m happy with.

“When you’re a young leader, sometimes you make a mistake. It’s, of course, good to keep it internally. Johan [Lange] and I had a good conversation with him this morning about everything, and we keep it internally.”

In FourFourTwo’s opinion, while it is unclear precisely who Romero is taking aim at, his strength of feeling is laid bare by the fact he hasn’t deleted the post, even after talks with his bosses at Spurs.

Such clashes between the captain and senior figures at the club are unlikely to do anything for squad harmony; a togetherness that will be needed if the north London club are to lift themselves out of their current predicament.

Frank publicly calling the post “a mistake” may also do him no favours moving forward, as Romero’s small edits suggest that’s not quite how he views it.

Bournemouth vs Tottenham: Premier League preview

Bournemouth have now taken just five points from their last ten Premier League outings.

The Cherries have slipped down the table over the festive period, and with their star man now set to play his final match for the club against Spurs, things could be about to get worse.

Andoni Iraola will want to bring in a replacement for Semenyo, with a failed move for Stuttgart's Jamie Leweling having already been reported.

Lewis Cook returned from a neck injury to come off the bench against the Gunners last time out, so the midfielder is back in contention for Spurs' visit.

Tyler Adams (knee), Ben Gannon-Doak (thigh), Ryan Christie (knee), Matai Akinmboni (muscle), Justin Kluivert (knee) and Will Dennis (ankle) are all out.

Spurs were pegged back against the Black Cats thanks to Brian Brobbey's 80th-minute strike and will be looking for a response on the south coast.

It is the Lilywhites away form which has impressed most this season, with only Arsenal boasting a better record on the road that their North London rivals.

In terms of injuries for this one Mohammed Kudus (thigh), Yves Bissouma (AFCON), Pape Sarr (AFCON), Dejan Kulusevski (knee), James Maddison (knee) and Dominic Solanke (ankle) and Destiny Udogie (thigh) are expected to miss out for the visitors.

In an uncharacteristic display from Oliver Glasner's men, the Eagles conceded two goals in 11 minutes in the first half, both via Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Tottenham also lost last time out, as Liverpool struck twice via Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike on home soil.

Thomas Frank's men have work to do to turn things around, although their away form is a little better.

Crystal Palace vs Tottenham: Premier League preview

Palace head into this one 8th in the table and still somewhat reeling following a dull display in West Yorkshire last time out.

Dean Henderson was mocked throughout and was handed a 5.8 rating by WhoScored after shipping four at Elland Road.

Captain and talisman Jean-Philippe Mateta was off the mark and mustered only two weak attempts against Leeds' sturdy backline.

On home soil, the Eagles haven't been great this season, winning just two games and Tottenham's away form will be a cause for concern.

Spurs finished their contest against Liverpool with only nine men, as both Xavi Simons and Cristian Romero were dismissed.

Frank is again facing pressure to turn things around, but admitted in his press conference to preview the game that he does still have full trust in his captain, despite his latest dismissal.

"Many times, of course," said the Dane after being quizzed on the Argentine's responsibilities. "After this game, and not only because it's Cristian, I spoke to the players in general.

"We can put the label on him as a captain, but all players need to have a cool head and lead by example. You cannot have only one leader on the pitch but I know he's the one with the armband. We're talking about a very passionate player."

Crystal Palace 3-1 Tottenham

Spurs are beginning to show cracks under Frank and we feel the Eagles will capatilise on Sunday.

Tottenham given green light to sign La Masia gem: report

Tottenham given green light to sign La Masia gem: report - FourFourTwo
Description

Tottenham Hotspur may now have the chance to sign an attacker they reportedly chased in the summer.

It was a busy summer for Spurs, which saw them bring in Thomas Frank as manager, and sealing permanent deals for Xavi Simons, Mohammed Kudus and Mathys Tel.

They also landed a loan move for PSG striker Randal Kolo Muani, seemingly providing all the firepower necessary.

Door open for Tottenham to seal summer target

It hasn’t quite gone to play for Spurs so far, however, with the team stuck in 11th place and their fresh attackers struggling to make opposition teams pay.

The January transfer window is just around the corner, and with it comes an opportunity to land a player Spurs were interested in in the summer, available at a knockdown price.

According to Fichajes in the summer, Spurs were plotting a move for Real Sociedad winger Takefusa Kubo that could have cost up to €70m.

That never materialised, and the north London club may be thankful it didn’t, as the same Spanish outlet are now claiming the Japan international could be available for as little as €40m, just over half his potential summer value.

It follows a difficult season for the 24-year-old, who has managed just one goal and one assist in 14 La Liga outings this term, playing on the right wing.

That’s an uncharacteristically poor return for Kubo, who registered five goals last season, 11 goal involvements the season before that and 16 goal involvements in 2022/23.

Based on Fichajes report, however, the Spanish side are losing patience with the La Masia-schooled winger and are ready to cash in now before his value drops any further.

In FourFourTwo’s opinion, this is a transfer that Spurs need to tread very carefully with.

One way of looking at it is the Premier League capitalising on a dropped value based on current form, from which they can help Kubo recover and potentially profit further down the line.

Another viewing is that the Japanese attacker’s output is a case of diminishing returns, that he has peaked young and regressed since then. If Spurs are taking the gamble, they need to be confident he sits in the first camp.

Tottenham begin talks for winger signing, amid interest from Manchester City, PSG and Barcelona: report

Tottenham begin talks for winger signing, amid interest from Manchester City, PSG and Barcelona: report - FourFourTwo
Description

Tottenham Hotspur face a battle with some of Europe’s top clubs for a talented young Bundesliga winger.

Spurs signed Mohammed Kudus in the summer, made Mathys Tel’s loan permanent, and have Wilson Odobert in the squad, but it still feels like they haven’t properly replaced Heung-min Son on the left wing.

Thomas Frank will be hoping these negotiations will work to fill that vacancy.

Tottenham Hotspur to return to Bundesliga for another attacker

Alongside Tel’s permanent deal, the north London club also invested a significant amount in bringing Xavi Simons in from the Bundesliga.

The young pair are still working to properly announce themselves on the Premier League stage after a tricky start, but that clearly hasn’t put Spurs off the German market.

Based on a report from German outlet Bild, Spurs have joined the race for FC Koln winger Said El Mala.

The same newspaper reported earlier this week that Manchester City, Manchester United, Bayern Munich, PSG and Barcelona all also hold an interest in the Germany youth international.

Bild have also revealed previously that Brighton & Hove Albion offered €20m for the attacker last summer, which was rejected by the Bundesliga outfit.

It’s believed that Koln want to wait until next summer to sell, where they will look for a fee between €50m-€60m, with onlooking Premier League sides believed to value him at up to €40m.

The 19-year-old has netted six goals and provided three assists in 14 Bundesliga outings so far this season, operating predominantly off the left.

In FourFourTwo’s opinion, this could be a smart move for Tottenham, if they can pull it off.

But that is easier said than done, with the number and prestige of clubs interested, and with El Mala under contract until 2030, Koln can sit back and try to drive the price up.

However, Spurs could do with some additional firepower on that left side, and a prospect like El Mala could be perfect for the task.

Watch Nottingham Forest vs Tottenham Hotspur for an intriguing clash in the Premier League, with FourFourTwo bringing you all the broadcast details in this guide.

Forest are very much in a relegation fight, with new boss Sean Dyche mustering a few decent performances but with a limp 3-0 defeat to Everton last time out. They're two points above the drop zone, so any points are precious at this stage.

Spurs have had a difficult season of their own and currently sit 11th in the Premier League table, the same position as in the Champions League table, where progress has been slightly more serene.

Still, the pressure is on manager Thomas Frank, especially here against weaker opposition.

Watch Tottenham Hotspur vs Brentford today as Thomas Frank welcomes former employers Brentford to north London, with FourFourTwo bringing you all the details on live streams and TV channels, wherever you are in the world.

If the Brentford team bus leaves the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with three points stowed away on Saturday, there will be more than a few Spurs fans who'd happily put Thomas Frank on board too.

It's to the enormous credit of Keith Andrews that there wouldn't be many Bees supporters who'd swap the new boss for his predecessor.

Read on as FourFourTwo brings you all the information on how to watch Spurs vs Brentford online, on TV, and from anywhere.

Is Tottenham Hotspur vs Brentford on TV in the UK?

Tottenham Hotspur vs Brentford is not being televised in the UK. The game is being played on Saturday at 3pm, a time when football matches cannot legally be broadcast in the UK. This is known as the '3pm 'blackout''.

The irony is you can watch the game in pretty much every country other than the one in which it's being played. If you're visiting the UK you can use NordVPN to access your usual coverage.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Brentford: Premier League preview

Frank's first meeting with Brentford as the manager of Spurs has arrived at an inopportune moment.

When these reunions occur, they can be a time for reflection upon changes past. It might be better for Frank if those summer decisions could rest undisturbed for a while longer.

Supporters at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium haven't had a lot to shout about in recent weeks. Spurs have won two of their last 10 Premier League matches and are winless in five.

They've produced better results in the Champions League. Getting there in the first place wasn't enough to save Ange Postecoglou and a respectable performance in Europe won't protect Frank from Premier League failings either.

Tickets

Frank's old team are losing the hardest games and winning the most winnable, by and large, and Andrews' composed management in the face of fluctuating results is being reinforced by the absurd scoring form of Igor Thiago.

The 24-year-old Brazilian has scored 11 goals in 13 Premier League starts, fewer than only Erling Haaland and five more than the chasing pack in the scoring charts.

Thiago has scored more than half of Brentford's goals and there's no doubt they could do with banging in a few more.

No team wants to draw lots of games but the Bees have lost seven and drawn one this season. Three of their defeats have been by a single goal, the rest by two. In a tight division, a more effective supporting cast for the leading man would go a long way.

Tottenham Hotspur 1-2 Brentford

Sometimes, fate decides. Two goals for Thiago, no points for Frank and fury by the Seven Sisters Road.

Destiny Udogie exclusive: ‘What happened away from football was a shock, something I’d never experienced before, I don’t wish it on anyone – but Spurs have really helped me and everything is good now, I don’t think about it any more’ - FourFourTwo
Description

Destiny Udogie has not had a straightforward start to the 2025-26 campaign – but he’s grateful for the way that Spurs and his family have rallied round him.

The defender first joined Tottenham Hotspur from Udinese in 2022, being loaned back to the Serie A club for a season before making the move to North London a year later.

Since then he’s made more than 80 appearances for Spurs, also forcing his way into the Italy squad, earning 12 caps so far.

Udogie's complicated campaign

Udogie was part of Spurs’ starting line-up as they beat Manchester United in the Europa League final in Bilbao last season, to secure the club’s first major trophy for 17 years, but has had two brief spells out of the 11 this season following a couple of knee injuries.

Speaking at the launch of PUMA’s new flagship store in central London, he says he has overcome those fitness issues.

“I had some setbacks but I’m feeling good and I just want to make sure I stay fit now,” said Udogie, who recently returned to the team.

“Obviously as a player you always want to play, so when you stay out of the team it’s not easy, but I’ve got my family and they help me every day.”

Udogie joined James Maddison, Morgan Rogers and Alex Scott at the store launch on Oxford Street – it’s PUMA’s largest ever European flagship store. “It’s nice to see the store – it’s beautiful,” he said. “I’ve been with PUMA almost all my life since I started playing professionally and I’ve always felt really good with them.”

Unwanted headlines

Udogie was in the news for unwanted reasons earlier this season after reports that he’d allegedly been threatened with a gun by a football agent.

It had previously been reported that an unnamed Premier League footballer had been targeted in London on September 6, with another man alleged to have been blackmailed and threatened by the same individual during the incident.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that a 31-year-old man had been arrested on September 8 on suspicion of possession of firearms with intent, blackmail and driving without a licence, and had been bailed while enquiries continued.

In early November, Spurs issued a statement saying: “We have been providing support for Destiny and his family since the incident and will continue to do so.”

At a press conference, first-team boss Thomas Frank reiterated the club’s support for Udogie. “It is a terrible situation to have been in and I can’t speak too much about it as it’s a legal case, as we know, but the club and we have done everything we can to support him,” the Dane said.

That support has meant a lot to Udogie, after a difficult situation. “Obviously it was a shock because it was something I’d never experienced before – honestly, I don’t wish it on anyone,” he told FourFourTwo.

“But the club was close to me, they really helped me. I’m grateful to the club, and now it has passed, I’m looking at the present and I don’t think about it any more.

“The club were next to me, my family was next to me, everyone was really good and we just managed to pass that moment. Now everything is good.”

Description

James Maddison was just two weeks away from the new season when an ACL injury stopped him in his tracks – but he’s been hard at work in his efforts to return to the field.

Maddison missed the end of last term with another knee injury, which ruled him out of the Europa League final, after he’d played a key role in getting Spurs to the showpiece fixture.

After returning to fitness during the summer though, he damaged his ACL during a pre-season friendly against Newcastle United in Seoul.

Maddison's long road back

The midfielder has been doing rehab work ever since, before popping into central London for the launch of PUMA’s new flagship store.

ACL injuries are usually considered to take around nine months to recover from, which would take Maddison to May, but speaking exclusively to FourFourTwo, he says he’s not putting a date on his return at this stage.

“I don’t know yet,” he said. “I’ve just been working hard every day – head down, grit my teeth and get through it. I can’t wait to get back fit – I’m so hungry, I’m working so hard.

“The medical team at Tottenham have been amazing, the manager, all the coaches, everyone has been very supportive, and like myself they all can’t wait to see me back on the pitch.”

The injury moved Maddison’s dream of playing at a World Cup further away. He was named in England’s squad for the 2022 tournament but didn’t get on to the field, hampered by an injury.

In recent times he’d found himself out of the Three Lions squad, but had been hoping to perform well at club level and force his way back into contention.

Asked if he still retained any hope at all of being back in action and making next summer’s tournament, he insisted that was looking too far ahead. “I’m just focusing on the rehab,” he said.

“It’s day by day at the minute, I have to get my knee right, feeling good and feeling strong, and the rest will take care of itself, like it always has done.

“I just can’t wait to be back doing my thing for Tottenham, proving myself and getting back to that level.”

London meet-up

PUMA’s new store on Oxford Street is the brand’s largest ever European flagship store, and Maddison joined Morgan Rogers, Destiny Udogie and Alex Scott at the launch.

“The store is amazing, I can’t wait to come in here and pick up a few freebies, I hope!” he joked. “I’ve been with PUMA for about seven years now maybe. I remember when I first signed for them, they said it was about going on a journey and building together.

“I feel like we’ve done that, I’m so close to the brand. It’s always been there for me, supporting me through the good times and the tough times.”

After the tough times of his injuries, Maddison hopes there are good times ahead.

There will be more from James Maddison in an upcoming issue of FourFourTwo magazine.
