Arsenal were held to a goalless draw by Tottenham in a dismal north London derby at the BetWright Stadium.

A win for either side would have lifted them above Manchester United into third in the Women's Super League, but neither team could break the deadlock in a low-quality affair.

The Gunners went closest to taking the lead in a first half desperately short of clearcut chances.

Beth Mead volleyed the ball across goal to Alessia Russo, but her first-time shot missed the target.

Stina Blackstenius then skipped past Clare Hunt and forced a decent save from Spurs goalkeeper Lize Kop.

England forward Mead picked up a knock in the early stages and did not come out for the second half, with Olivia Smith on as a substitute.

The Canadian winger almost made an immediate impact when she dribbled around Amanda Nildén to reach the byline and cut the ball back, but Blackstenius skied her shot from eight yards out.

Smith should have opened the scoring on the hour mark when she was played through on goal by Russo's clever flick, but her fierce drive was beaten away by Kop.

Spanish playmaker Mariona Caldentey, making her 50th start for the Gunners, tried her luck from the edge of the penalty area, but her effort flew well over.
