Rangers should push the boat out this season with a marquee addition, as club legend Mark Hateley believes enlisting another Mikey Moore would send out a transfer statement of intent from the 49ers.
The 18-year old was a breath of fresh air in Govan in a struggling Rangers side during his loan spell from Tottenham. Rangers have been exploring a permanent move for the winger, however Moore’s future potential makes him an ambitious target. Despite this, Hateley believes the club should sign another player of his pedigree, whether it’s a permanent transfer or another loan deal.
£6m former Hull City goalkeeper Ivor Pandur remains Rangers’ most expensive addition of the summer so far. With the help of the financial backing from Chairman Andrew Cavenagh and the 49ers Enterprise, they’ve added seven new players to their squad with new several faces to be expected between now and Deadline Day. Across the city, Celtic broke their incoming transfer record with the £11m signing of striker Kasper Hogh from Bodo Glimt.
Hateley says Gers should push the boat out
When asked if the club's hierarchy would commit to spending big on one specific player this summer if the opportunity came up, Hateley responded: "Absolutely. You need that because it's just like whether you get a spend or you bring in the loan. It's like Mikey Moore last year. Mikey Moore was incredible.
“He settled in, found his position, and he just grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck. That sort of player, you know, just 18, coming in, showing the weight of the shirt didn't matter to him. He was ready to go with it. That's still rumbling on in the background, whether he'll be coming back, or not.”
Transfer target Vaclav Cerny would fit the bill of a marquee signing. The former loanee is currently plying his trade at Besiktas where he’s on high wages, but Rangers remain interested in securing a deal. The Czech winger scored 18 goals and registered nine assists during the 2024/25 at Ibrox while on loan from Wolfsburg.
Hateley on Rangers rebuild
After a disappointing third place finish last season, a squad overhaul was always likely in Govan irrespective of the manager. However new boss Derek McInnes has created an identity within the squad, which consists of a Scottish core with leaders all over the pitch. Hateley acknowledges that it’ll take time for the new look Rangers team to gel, but is happy with the direction they’re going.
“But as I say, we're in the really, really early phases of trying to build something. You know, and as a classic saying says, Rome was not built in a day. There's no truer words. As I say, we're going back now 10, 15 years and the slide of where we want to be has been pretty clear to me. We need to pick ourselves up now, dust ourselves off and build properly for the future."
