Scottish football was rocked last night be the news that Brendan Rodgers had resigned from his position as Celtic manager following Sunday’s 3-1 defeat to Hearts at Tynecastle.

Legendary former Hoops boss Martin O’Neill has taken interim charge of the team as the reigning Premiership champions look to appoint a permanent successor to the Northern Irishman for the second time. It may be less than 24 hours since his departure but speculation is already rife about who the next permanent Celtic manager could be.

The name leading the discussion early on is Ange Postecoglou with the former Celtic boss currently out of work after a short and disastrous spell at Premier League side Nottingham Forrest. Now, a new report suggests that the Glasgow club are set to ‘make contact’ with the Australian over a possible return to Parkhead.

Celtic to ‘make contact’ with Ange Postecoglou and ‘sound out’ former Tottenham boss over return

Per a report from Football Insider, Celtic plan to ‘make contact’ with Ange Postecoglou to ‘sound out’ their former head coach about a possible return to the club. The 60-year old is the current favourite to replace Brendan Rodgers on a full time basis.

The Australian left Celtic in 2023 after guiding them to a memorable treble while making it back-to-back Scottish Premiership and League Cup wins from his first season in charge. He left to take over at English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur where he also spent two seasons.

He managed over 100 games at the North London club and guided them to victory in the UEFA Europa League but their domestic form last season was far from acceptable and he was relieved of his duties. He was back in management by September with Nottingham Forrest but lasted just eight matches, winning zero, before being unceremoniously dumped earlier this month.

Chris Sutton says Postecoglou would be ‘smart’ Celtic appointment

Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has put his backing firmly behind Postecoglou returning to the Scottish Champions. He believes bringing the Australian back to Glasgow’s east end would be ‘smart’ business.

He told Sky Sports: “I think Ange Postecoglou would be a really smart appointment. He was loved the first time round.

“His brand of football went down well in Glasgow. He’s out of work. I think that would be a pretty obvious choice, a good choice and bring a lot of positivity back to Celtic, which they need right now.”

Prior to arriving at Celtic there was very little know about Postecoglou in Northern Hemisphere football with the bulk of his managerial career up to that point having taken place in Australia and Japan. He spent four years in charge of the Socceroos national men’s team between 2013 and 2017 before moving to J-League side Yokohama F. Marinos.

He lifted the J-League title in 2019, adding to the A-League titles he had won earlier in his career with Brisbane Roar. During his time as Celtic manager he won back-to-back PFA Scotland Manager of the Year awards.

As the International break draws to a close, Tottenham Hotspur have their eye on a Rangers player, who once again performed well for his country.

After the dismissal of Russell Martin, Rangers are now on the hunt for their fourth manager in as many years. Steven Gerrard looked to be the front runner for the job, although has now bowed out of the race due to timing issues. With their next match against Dundee United just around the corner, the Rangers board will need to act fast if they want the new gaffer to be in the dugout on Saturday.

A number of Ibrox stars featured for their countries during the break including John Souttar and Nico Raskin. In Scotland’s win over Greece, the former was a rock at the back for Steve Clarke’s side, while once again, Raskin played 180 minutes for Belgium in their draw with North Macedonia and victory against Wales. After two solid performances, the midfielder has gained some outside recognition.

Tottenham enter race for Raskin

After his Man of the Match display against Macedonia, Tottenham Hotspur have joined the transfer race for the Belgium midfielder. Wolverhampton Wanderers and Crystal Palace are also interested in Raskin, having failed to sign him in the summer.

According to TeamTalk, the North London side would be willing to pay the £25m Rangers want for their tenacious midfielder in January. The fee would eclipse the £19.6m Calvin Bassey deal to Ajax in 2022 as Rangers’ most expensive transfer departure. Despite this, the sudden interest has emerged at a strange time after The Gers’ recent managerial dismissal.

Raskin and Martin never appeared to see eye-to-eye at the start of the season, as the former Rangers manager dropped the Belgium International on numerous occasions. Raskin wasn’t even on the bench for the league fixtures against Celtic and Hearts at Ibrox because of the Martin feud. The former Standard Liege man looked set for a move away from Govan in the summer, but eventually decided to stay and try to build bridges between himself and the manager.

New boss, new Raskin?

Even when Martin did play Raskin, it was normally not in his favoured role of a box-to-box central midfielder. Considering his height, the 24-year old is strong in the air and has scored a number of headers for Rangers, both from set-pieces and arriving late in the box.

He was also deployed in this position for Belgium, where he has excelled of late alongside the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Leandro Trossard and Thibault Courtois. Since receiving his Belgium debut in March, Raskin has kept his place in a star-studded starting XI.

Whoever the new boss is will have a decision on their hands whether to play him as a six or an eight, but with Martin gone, the shackles will be off the midfielder. Rangers fans will be hoping in their latest new managerial era that their Belgian star can play with freedom.

Rangers’ current search for a new manager could trigger a domino effect on their squad, according to new reports.

As the struggling Glasgow side continue their efforts to patch together this dismal start to the season, here’s the latest on how their efforts could impact the team at Ibrox.

Mikey Moore’s Rangers stint depends on new manager appointment

Mikey Moore could potentially be recalled from his role at Rangers, according to TEAMtalk. The rising star was sent to Ibrox to pursue regular minutes to boost his chances of breaking into the senior team at Tottenham Hotspur.

However, with zero goal contributions in 10 appearances and the chaos of Russell Martin’s sacking, Moore’s position at the club hangs in the balance. Whether he remains at Ibrox or returns to Spurs rests heavily on who Rangers bring in as their new manager, as the club fear the lack of positive experience could impact him.

“There was a good feeling about Moore making the move to Rangers but it has been difficult for him to shine on the pitch during a period of crisis and revolt,” Dean Jones told TEAMtalk.

“It’s still a huge learning experience for him and I know there remains hope that he experiences more positive times but they have to make sure this next phase under a new manager is helpful to him.

“There have been some murmurs about whether they [Spurs] should look into bringing him back. The club are trying their best to make sure he has a future pathway into the team at Spurs so we will have to see what happens with the the next Rangers manager before understanding what can happen to keep this stage of his career moving forwards.”

Midfielder tipped as ‘perfect solution’ for Celtic

Following their underwhelming summer transfer window, Celtic have been a hot topic of conversation heading into the new year. While the Hoops remain unbeaten in the Scottish Premiership, Hearts are proving to be stiff competition, and currently hold the top spot while the league pauses for the international break.

Data analytics firm SciSports has highlighted a target who would benefit from a move to Parkhead, as well as provide Celtic with a strong new signing. The assessment provided (via Football Transfers) has put Ajax midfielder Kian Fitz-Jim forward into the Celtic eyeline.

SciSports has reportedly given the Hoops a Club Fit rating of 87, which takes into account a variety of factors, including how well a player will fit into the team, their potential development and amount of expected playing time.

This high score suggest Fitz-Jim is a ‘perfect solution’ for Celtic who are looking to push their attacking style further forward.

The 22-year-old has had a mixed run of playing time at Ajax so far this season, making three Eredivisie starts, coming off the bench three times but also being an unused substitute on two occasions.

Fitz-Jim currently has an Estimated Transfer Value of €6.5 million (£5.6m). He is under contract with Ajax until 2027, so the club may be inclined to sell next year rather than allow him to enter the last 12 months of his deal.

Rangers have made a slow start to the new Scottish Premiership season. The Gers are looking to hit some form over the coming weeks as they look to close the gap on Hearts and Celtic above them. Russell Martin was picked as their head coach over the summer.

It has been a tough first few months for the 39-year-old at Ibrox. He has been the subject of widespread criticism over recent times. Prior to his switch to the Gers, he had spells down the border in England with the likes of MK Dons, Swansea City and Southampton.

Rangers loanee Mikey Moore’s honest verdict on spell so far

Rangers swooped to sign attacker Mikey Moore on loan from Tottenham Hotspur this past summer. He was given the green light to leave the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on a temporary basis to get some experience under his belt. The youngster is due to spend the whole campaign with the Gers.

He has had this to say about his spell in Glasgow so far, as per Sky Sports Football on X: “It’s a massive, massive club. I think myself personally I could have been better so far. I’m looking to change it and I think the whole team are looking to change it. We’re all together. We’re looking to change the way it’s been going.”

Moore, 18, has been on the books of Spurs for his whole career to date. He has risen up through the academy ranks of the Premier League side. The teenager was a regular for them at various different youth levels.

The England youth international made his first-team debut for his parent club back in May 2024 in a league fixture against Manchester City. He has since gone on to make 21 appearances in all competitions for them to date and has chipped in with one goal. The prospect has taken a while to get going so far at Rangers but has plenty of time on his side to make an impact.

Mikey Moore eyeing Rangers impact

Rangers landed Moore to give them something different at the top end of the pitch. He provides them with more competition and depth in their attacking department. Supporters have had to be patient with him so far.

After sealing his move in the last transfer window, he said at the time: “I’m excited to get going. As soon as I heard Rangers were interested and wanted me to come, it was a massive opportunity for me. I’m excited to be here and hopefully I can show the fans and everyone what I can do.

“I’ve always loved Rangers as a club. My family have always loved them. I think with the new boss and the way that we play, it’s a great place to be at the minute. It was a pretty easy decision for me to come here.”

Martin added: “We are thrilled to bring Mikey on loan for this season. His profile as a brave, aggressive attacking player is one that we were keen to add to the squad, and he is certainly a player who, despite his age, can make an impact on the team from day one.”

Michael Stewart has called out Rangers for placing too much faith in Tottenham youngster Mikey Moore to produce the goods in the final third.

The outspoken BBC pundit has slammed recruitment chiefs at Ibrox for billing the 18-year-old as a ‘world beater’ after bringing him north of the border on a season-long loan deal over the summer, with no obligation or option to buy.

Moore enjoyed a breakthrough year in North London last term, where he made 19 first-team appearances under former Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou and picked up a Europa League winners' medal in the process

However, the winger has struggled to make much of an impact for the Light Blues so far, with head coach Russell Martin already facing calls to be sacked after failing to win in any of his first five Premiership matches.

Rangers have placed too many demands on Mikey Moore

Moore played 76 minutes of Saturday's 2-0 Premiers Sports Cup quarter-final win over Hibs that bought Martin some more time in the dugout but Stewart reckons they have placed demands on the teenager that are simply too much for him to contend with at this stage of his fledgling career.

Speaking on the Premier Sports Scottish Football Social Club, he said: “This strikes me that the people who are making these decisions behind the scenes at the club don't really recognise how difficult it would be for a youngster to come from England and have so much pressure (to perform).

“They made him out to be a world beater who was coming into a misfiring team to spearhead it. The guy is a youngster. I don't really understand the strategy of spending mega bucks on loan fees to bring in really young, inexperienced guys for you then to develop other club's talent.

“You would get greater value and productivity out of signing Vaclav Cerny who was a solid, already made starter who would have had an impact on the team.

“To be fair, over on the left I think (Djeidi) Gassama is looking like a good addition. But Mikey Moore doesn't comfortable on the right. They are loaded with right footers who want to play on the left but don't have many options on the right.

“You are then asking this kid to play on the other side, which he is not totally comfortable with in a team that has not really found it's feet yet. He is still trying to learn the game and I think it's a lot to put on the youngster's shoulders.”

Pundit fears Mikey Moore is trapped in ‘toxic’ Ibrox environment

Amid the unrest, it’s safe to say the environment Moore is currently operating in is far from ideal for a player eager to impress and looking to build on his burgeoning reputation.

And former Celtic striker Chris Sutton fears the Spurs talent might not get a proper chance to express himself because he is now trapped in a “toxic” situation

Speaking on BBC Radio Five Live’s Monday Night Club last week, Sutton commented: “It’s a really difficult place to play. Rangers have recruited a fair few young players, and the environment to play in is toxic.

“Another player whose gone to Rangers from down south, who I was really excited about, to see how he’d do, Mikey Moore, the young Tottenham Hotspur talent. I think from the cameos we’ve seen of him, you’re thinking ‘blimey’.

“I really feel sorry for the young players because they are carrying such a burden on their shoulders, and these are young players; it’s affecting their careers. It will be interesting to see whether they can come back from that.”

Nottingham Forest’s decision to appoint Ange Postecoglou as their new head coach earlier this month was met with plenty of backlash from fans as he seeks redemption following his controversial dismissal from Tottenham Hotspur.

The move - potentially driven by his close personal connection with fellow countryman and controversial club owner Evangelos Marinakis - has been viewed as a risky gamble, with the Aussie back in the dugout just three months after being sacked by their Premier League rivals.

That came despite leading the North London club to Europa League glory last season, but their worst-ever league campaign led Daniel Levy to wield the axe and the former Celtic boss will now attempt to end Forest’s lengthy trophy drought which stretches back to 1990.

However, supporters remain unconvinced he is the right man to take the Reds forward, particularly in Europe with one punter even suggesting “he’ll take us from Betis to Barnsley”.

Asked if he feels any added pressure to deliver results to try and change the narrative over his arrival at the City Ground, Postecoglou stated: “I think there's been negativity around my arrival since I got to the Premier League. So that's kind of the constant space I'm in. So, no, look, it's not about me.

“Like I said, I think it is important we win on Saturday. Not for me to ease the pressure, I think. But we've lost the last two games in the Premier League, and in the Premier League, every game is tough.

“You don't want to sort of be in a position where you haven't won because then you start chasing the game a little bit. We've got to try and make amends after two poor Premier League results to try and get points on the board and start moving us in the right direction on the table.”

Nottingham Forest ‘paid the ultimate price’ in Carabao Cup exit

Discussing Forest’s recent form, Postecoglou admits he is expecting a positive performance from his side when they visit fellow early season strugglers Burnley this weekend.

He felt his players “paid the ultimate price” in the final 15 minutes of their midweek 3-2 Carabao Cup defeat to EFL Championship opponents Swansea having found themselves 2-0 up, but saw signs that the squad he has inherited from Nuno Espirito Santo are taking his ideas on board.

Postecoglou added: “It's just disappointing in a game where we did so many good things that we just sort of let the game get away from us. And you exit a competition where you could potentially have some success in.

“But again, that's just part of the process we're in at the moment. I know the players were disappointed with the way we handled the last sort of 10, 15 minutes of the game. And we paid the ultimate price for it. That's what happens in cup competitions.”

Former Rangers star Graham Roberts has revealed he is battling prostate cancer - with the Ibrox great now aiming to raise money via a fundraiser set up by his daughter to treat the illness.

The 66-year-old spent two season with the Light Blues between 1986 and 1988, scoring three goals in 69 appearances to help Graeme Souness' all-conquering side win both the league title and a Scottish League Cup.

A no-nonsense defender who was renowned for his leadership on the pitch, Roberts arrived in Govan following a successful six-year spell at Tottenham Hotspur, where he won two FA Cups and the UEFA Cup in 1984.

After leaving North London, the six-time capped England international then moved to English rivals Chelsea and was part of the side that lifted the old Second Division title in 1989.

He also turned out for West Brom and a string of English lower league clubs before hanging up his boots in 1999. Roberts embarked on a coaching career thereafter and later had a spell in charge of Clyde and the Nepal national team.

Graham Roberts provides health update amid ongoing prostate cancer battle

In a heart-breaking message on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), he has provided an update on his fight against prostate cancer and has asked fans for donations for the charity, Prostate United ahead of taking on a challenge.

His post read: “I'm undergoing radiotherapy treatment and brachytherapy for prostate cancer and would love to raise money for this charity.

“This October, my daughter is walking 5km each day and I am going to try and do as much as I can as well. Please donate to this," followed by a link to the fundraising page.”

On the Prostate Cancer website, Hollie wrote: “My dad Graham Roberts is currently undergoing radiotherapy treatment and brachytherapy for prostate cancer.

“Prostate cancer kills one man every 45 minutes - that’s half a football match. But it doesn’t have to be this way.

“This October, I’m joining Prostate United by walking, 5km every day with my fellow football fans to help save men’s lives. Dad is also going to try and walk each week as well after his treatment.

“Sponsor me to help fund lifesaving research for men and their families affected by this disease. Thank you.”

Summer signing Mikey Moore made his Rangers debut against Alloa Athletic at the weekend, slipping straight into the starting lineup for the Premier Sports Cup clash at Ibrox.

Moore, who recently celebrated his 18th birthday, signed for the Light Blues on a season-long loan from Tottenham Hotspur at the start of the month. Brought in the bolster Rangers’ creativity, the winger wasted no time contributing to the goalscoring action on Saturday.

Moore provided the assist for Rangers’ opening goal as Nedim Bajrami got their side ahead just 13 minutes into the clash. Russell Martin praised Moore’s ‘intent with the ball’ after the match and told the media he planned to ‘keep him free’ and ‘let him express himself’ on the pitch.

Mikey Moore ready for European action with Rangers

Moore spoke to the media after his Rangers debut, with focus now shifted to their Champions League play-off clash against Club Brugge on Tuesday.

The Light Blues will host the Belgian side at Ibrox for the first leg of this high stakes clash and Moore is ready to do his bit for the team, should he be called upon during the match.

“It’s a massive game, as every game is when you play for Rangers so I’m excited for it. I saw some of the games in the earlier rounds and it’s been good to qualify so it’s a massive opportunity for me and all the boys so yeah, I can’t wait to go out there.”

Mikey Moore on Ibrox atmosphere ahead of huge Rangers clash

Moore was then asked whether he made the trip to Ibrox last December, when the Gers hosted Tottenham in their Europa League clash. The game ended 1-1 thanks to an opening goal from Hamza Igamane but Dejan Kulusevski clawed the equaliser back later on. The gripping clash brought the noise in Glasgow as Rangers were unfazed by the Premier League and the return of former rival manager Ange Postecoglou after his departure from Celtic.

Moore admitted he did not travel with Spurs as he was out injured at the time but heard from his teammates inside the dressing room about the electric atmosphere at Ibrox.

“At the time I was out for a bit so I couldn’t come up but I was watching on the TV, I was fuming that I couldn’t [make it],” Moore continued. “When they came back, they said it was one of the best atmospheres they’ve ever played at. So I think when I heard about Rangers, that came straight into my mind and I remembered all the good things the boys said so I can’t wait to play in that sort of atmosphere.”

Rangers will get the first leg of their play-off clash with Club Brugge underway on Tuesday, August 19th at 8pm. Martin and co will be hoping to snatch an early advantage, similar to their previous wins over Panathinaikos and Viktoria Plzen.

A man with a foot in both Rangers and Tottenham camps reckons the Light Blues have struck gold with their recruit from Spurs.

Mikey Moore’s international clearance has been granted and he debuted on Saturday in a 4-2 Premier Sports Cup win against Alloa Athletic. It’s a timely introduction for the winger, giving boss Russell Martin more options ahead of Champions League play-off clashes against Club Brugge. There is also a four point gap in the Premiership to claw back and derby against Celtic to navigate before August is out.

Former Rangers and Tottenham star Alan Hutton follows both his ex sides closely, on punditry duty for Premier Sports at Ibrox on Saturday. Having watched Moore develop and be rewarded with a new deal at Tottenham, he believes the recently turned 18-year-old has the talent to get Rangers fans off their seat. Hutton also reckons he will have the mentality to cope with the demands of Rangers, having experienced similar at his parent side.

Alan Hutton on why Mikey Moore is strong Rangers signing from Tottenham

The ex Scotland international said: “It’s been building up, fans been waiting for weeks to see him. I think he comes as a guy with so much potential and for me what I love about him is he plays with such freedom. At one so young he believes in his ability, he can play right across that front line.

“I like him on the left because I think he can take the ball in, he wants to come inside, he wants to link up, he moves with real pace and he's clever. He can see a pass and he wants to get on the end of things so I can imagine why the Rangers fans are desperate because they know what he's capable of. So I'm really looking forward to seeing him because there's some huge games coming up for Rangers.

“I know they'll be focusing on this one but in the weeks to come he will be needed and if you give you that little spark, that's something different to unlock a defence. That's what Rangers have been looking for.

Seamless transition from Rangers to Tottenham

“He’s playing in front of huge crowds down there, big stadiums, environments that he's going to thrive in. It's probably the next level for him now, stepping out, coming to a club where the expectation is all so high to go and prove himself. And I just think he's got all the qualities needed to be a top professional and I think he'll do well here.

Former St Johnstone and Queen’s Park boss Callum Davidson was also on the panel and added: “He's a young lad, there's a lot of pressure playing here as well. Alan knows probably more than anybody, there's a lot of pressure playing here.

“So hopefully we can see his attacking player, hopefully you can see him go past people, excite the Rangers fans. That's what they're looking for.

Rangers are closing in on the signing of Tottenham Hotspur wonderkid Mikey Moore on a season-long loan.

The Europa League winners will send the 17-year-old attacking starlet out a first senior loan spell this season and Ibrox is his expected destination after Russell Martin held direct talks with Spurs official to convince them that a move to Rangers would aid he development best.

And despite stiff competition from a host of English Championship clubs including Sheffield United and Hull City, the Light Blues are understood to be strong favourites to land Moore’s signature.

The Daily Telegraph report that ‘there has been a lot of interest’ in the England youth international, who has made a dozen first-team appearances for the North London club.

Moore made history at Spurs when, at 17 years and 172 days, he became England’s youngest-ever scorer in a major competition when he netted against Elfsborg in the Europa League - breaking a record set by the legendary Jimmy Greaves.

Tottenham were keen to keep hold of Moore this term but new boss Thomas Frank has reluctantly agreed to let him head out on loan for more regular game time. He was omitted from the pre-season tour of Asia to discuss a temporary switch to Glasgow.

What Ange Postecoglou has said about Moore

Former Spurs and Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou admitted Moore’s rapid rise had come quicker than expected last year. He stated: “We’ve exposed Mikey a hell of a lot more than I thought we would at the start of the year.

“He only just started playing Under-21 football last year and he had some injuries, didn’t play a lot. It was kind of touch-and-go at the start of the year, do we let him bed in with the 21s or give him a loan or keep him with us?

“But my thing was to let him train for a year, train with men, train in the first team environment and see how he adapts.

“At the end of that, he’ll still be 17 or 18 and we can make decisions, but he’s played a lot more than we thought. But he’s very much a part of our set-up in the first-team and he’s training every day.”

Spurs ‘happy’ to send Moore on loan to Rangers

According to TBR Football’s chief corresponded Graeme Bailey, Tottenham appreciate what they have heard from Martin and are happy for one of their brightest young talents to head north of the border.

Spurs recently appointed Stuart Lewis, who was Moore’s Under-18s coach, and he’s been tasked with integrating academy prospects into the senior squad.

Moore would face stiff competition for a starting place with the Lilywhites currently well-stocked in the wide areas.
