A number of Tottenham players have been left furious by the sacking of Ange Postecoglou, it’s been claimed.

The former Celtic boss parted ways with the North London club on Friday after being informed by chairman Daniel Levy that he has been relieved of his duties following a period of post-season reflection.

On what was the second anniversary of his appointment and just 16 days after leading Spurs to their first European trophy in 41 years, Postecoglou had returned to the UK from a family holiday in Greece to learn his fate.

A club statement explained the decision had been taken after a review of performances and 'significant reflection' after Levy held a hastily arranged meeting in the wake of a 4-1 defeat at home to Brighton on the final day of the Premier League season.

He later visited the Bahamas where he is understood to have met with Tottenham’s majority shareholders before taking the decision to axe the popular Australian.

However, according to the Telegraph, Levy could face a potential revolt from several angered stars who could be looking to leave the club as a result of the decision. A source close to the publication revealed: “The players are so angry about what has happened and how it has been handled. The next manager is going to inherit a difficult situation.”

What Tottenham players said about Ange Postecolgou

A number of players took to social media on Friday night to pay tribute to their former boss. Right back Pedro Porro took to Instagram and posted three images of himself and Postecoglou along with a heartfelt message. It read: “Thank you for everything, boss.” His message began. “For mentoring me early on, helping me settle into the club, and trusting me out on the pitch.

“I'll always be grateful for the way you led us, defended us, and kept us going through all the highs and lows. Above everything, you gave us one of the greatest moments in the club's history and for that, you'll always be celebrated. Wishing you all the very best, boss.”

Brazilian striker Richarlison commented: “Mister, massive thanks for helping me out and believing in me during one of the trickiest periods of my career and my life. Everyone who loves the Spurs will remember that Big Ange always bags trophies in his second season. We've made history! Cheers and good luck on your journey! I'll always be rooting for you.”

Fellow attacker Dominic Solanke wrote: 'Thank you for bringing me to this wonderful club, thank you for bringing us a wonderful trophy. Won't ever forget the convo we had before I signed and we achieved a dream! All the best in your next adventure.”

Postecoglou had earlier issued a statement of his own, in which he spoke of his pride at having delivered a European trophy to “one of England's historic football clubs”.

The statement read: “When I reflect on my time as Manager of Tottenham Hotspur my overriding emotion is one of pride. The opportunity to lead one of England's historic football clubs and bring back the glory it deserves will live with me for a lifetime. Sharing that experience with all those who truly love this club and seeing the impact it had on them is something I will never forget.

“That night in Bilbao was the culmination of two years of hard work, dedication and unwavering belief in a dream. There were many challenges to overcome and plenty of noise that comes with trying to accomplish what many said was not possible. We have also laid foundations that mean this club should not have to wait 17 more years for their next success. I have enormous faith in this group of players and know there is much more potential and growth in them.

“I sincerely want to thank those who are the lifeblood of the club, the supporters. I know there were some difficult times but I always felt that they wanted me to succeed and that gave me all the motivation I needed to push on.”

It’s reported that whoever replaces Postecoglou will have a difficult task in turning the morale of the dressing room around.

Rangers and Celtic are preparing for a new campaign but there are varying degrees of readiness for the off season.

The Light Blues have started a new era under 49ers Enterprises and Andrew Cavenagh but a new head coach is still needed ahead of a first team overhaul. At Parkhead, and it’s more a case of fine tuning than overhaul for Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic side, who are still keen to strengthen for building on their Premiership and League Cup double.

Left-back Harley Mills is one player currently linked. Here are some of the latest headlines regarding both clubs, including a former Hoops boss’ Tottenham Hotspur future and a Premiership owner’s 49ers hope.

Tottenham backlash could beckon if former Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou sacked

There have been reports in some sections that former Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou could be sacked by Tottenham, even after winning the Europa League. Football London have poured cold water on shock and awe rumours burning and insists there would be a dressing room outrage should the man who left Celtic in 2023 be removed.

It’s stated: “Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is still believed to be weighing up the future of Ange Postecoglou as he faces a crunch decision over the direction of the club. Football.london reported on Friday that Levy is planning to implement huge changes within the club this summer, which will begin with the arrival of new CEO Vinai Venkatesham this week. Venkatesham drew widespread praise for his work at north London rivals Arsenal and had been coveted by the Spurs chairman for some time with his arrival expected to spark change within the hierarchy at Spurs.

“Amid the sweeping changes to come behind the scenes at the club, Postecoglou looked set to head out of the door until he led Tottenham to their first trophy in 17 years with the Europa League triumph, the club's first European triumph in 41 years. In doing so, the Australian not only ended that silverware drought but he also landed Spurs a lucrative place in the Champions League next season along with a spot in the UEFA Super Cup against PSG in August. In his eyes, the head coach has delivered all of the targets asked of him.

“There are some fears within Spurs of a dressing room backlash if Postecoglou was to be sacked after finally bringing tangible success to the north London club and it would also spark a reaction from the majority of the fanbase as well with most believing the head coach has earned the opportunity to deliver on his promise that season three will be better than season two - a declaration that brought a huge roar from the estimated 220,000 supporters at the trophy parade last month.”

Premiership owner’s 49ers takeover hope for Rangers

Dundee United chairman Mark Ogren has high hopes for the 49ers at Rangers. The Light Blues are the latest club to come under American influence, with Ogren in at United alongside US investment at Dundee, Aberdeen, Hibs and St Johnstone. There are some things in Scotland that wrankle with him but the 49ers arrival can only be a good thing for the game.

Ogren told the Athletic: “I’m hoping the 49ers being involved is going to increase the exposure, but there is definitely scope to increase the revenue. The TV deal is a big thing, but also the culture. The alcohol situation continues to bother me. Celtic and Rangers are in a different financial class than all of us, quite frankly, but there’s still three European spots in most years that are available. The ramifications of getting into Europe can be really big.”

Under-pressure Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou is expected to allow a former Celtic hero to leave the club for free this summer after three seasons with the club as he prepares for a defining summer window of transfer activity.

The Lillywhites finished last season in 17th position in the top-flight with 11 wins, five draws and 22 defeats. It marked their worst finish of the Premier League era and their most defeats in a season since 1935. It also marked a drop off of 12 places from Postecoglou’s debut season where he guided the North London outfit to fifth place while winning three consecutive Manager of the Month awards in the early part of the season.

The former Celtic boss faces a nervous wait to find out if he’ll be kept on for a third season after a calamitous league campaign. However, the one saving grace which could bide the Parkhead favourite more time is the fact that he was successfully able to win the Europa League by triumphing over Manchester United, ending a 17-year trophy drought and ensuring Champions League qualification for next season.

Ange Postecoglou makes axe decision

Several players are set to exit Tottenham this summer and one confirmed departure is Fraser Forster, according to PA. The former Celtic shot-stopper and Alfie Whiteman will depart alongside left-back Sergio Reguilon in the summer as part of Ange Postecoglou’s wholesale changes to the club’s playing staff.

Forster, who has played 236 times for the Hoops in total across four different spells, joined the Lillywhites on a free transfer in 2022, following the expiration of his contract at Southampton, where he played for eight years after leaving Parkhead in 2014.

The six-time England international made 34 appearances in total for the North London side, conceding 54 goals in total and keeping eight clean sheets.

Forster was largely viewed as the team’s third choice goalkeeper and was brought in to add experience to the first team dressing room, but did play a small part in the club’s Europa League triumph.

Overall, he played 13 times this season, including four in the league-phase in Europe, conceding a combined total of 15 goals and keeping just two clean sheets across all competitions.

He shared his delight to have played a small but important part in Tottenham’s progress by posting on Instagram: “Another one for the collection.” with a heart eyed emoji and a wink emoji.

What next for Fraser Forster?

Fraser Forster last made the matchday squad in December 2024 and now faces a decision on whether to carry on playing professionally or whether to retire after a successful 19-year career in the sport which stretches all the way back to his days at Newcastle United when he was given his first professional contract.

Forster is 37-years-old but remains a player of high value due to the experience that he can offer a team both as a first choice keeper or more likely as a backup option to provide advice for younger up and coming goalkeepers in a team.

Tottenham goalkeeper Fraser Forster became the latest former Celtic man to celebrate silverware this season after one-time Parkhead fan favourite Virgil van Dijk captained Liverpool to just their second league title of the Premier League era.

Forster, who racked up 236 appearances across four separate stints with the Glasgow giants, played 13 times for Ange Postecoglou’s team across all competitions, in a campaign where the club despite being ravaged by injuries and enduring a horror league season, managed to end their 17-year wait for silverware and secure their spot in the Champions League next term.

The 37-year-old, who won seven trophies with Celtic, including four league titles, has now taken his career trophy haul to nine after winning the League One title with Norwich City earlier in his career in 2009/10.

He shared his delight to have played a small but important part in Tottenham’s progress by posting on Instagram: “Another one for the collection.” with a heart eyed emoji and a wink emoji.

Virgil van Dijk congratulates Fraser Forster on epic Europa League triumph

Netherlands international Virgil van Dijk, who played alongside Fraser Forster at Celtic between 2013 and 2015, congratulated the ex-England goalkeeper on his achievement.

He commented on his post by simply putting the raise hand emoji to express his delight at Forster’s team getting one over Liverpool’s bitter rivals Manchester United.

The pair won the league in both of their two seasons in Glasgow’s east end and also went on to play together in the Premier League with a strong Southampton team which exceeded expectations by finishing sixth then eighth under Ronald Koeman and Claude Puel before Van Dijk’s big money to Liverpool for a reported £75m, which at the time was a record fee paid for a defender.

Van Dijk has gone on to win the Premier League twice, two League Cups, an FA Cup and the Champions League while making the Team of the Season on four occasions, which is likely to become five by the end of the current campaign.

Meanwhile, for Forster this marks his first major trophy since the league title with Celtic in 2019/20 under the guidance of Neil Lennon during what proved to be a fruitful loan spell.

What next for Fraser Forster?

Fraser Forster has predominantly been the third choice goalkeeper under former Celtic boss Ange Postcoglou at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

He’s made 13 appearances in total and has conceded 15 times, with his only clean sheets coming against AZ Alkmaar in Europe and Southampton in the league.

Forster signed a contract extension in December 2023, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2025, meaning he’s set to become a free agent unless he agrees a new contract with the North London club in the near future.

It remains to be seen whether Forster will extend his spell in the capital or move onto pastures new. While the same question can largely be used to describe Ange Postecoglou, who despite fulfilling his prophecy of always winning a trophy in his second season, faces a blurry future at present after leading the Lillywhites to their worst ever performance of the Premier League era.

Rangers are one of eight clubs left in the Europa League but they will need to fight uphill against clubs like Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur to go all the way again.

The Light Blues lost 2-0 at home to Fenerbahce in the second leg of their round of 16 tie, but still progressed to the quarter-finals of the competition after Jack Butland produced two standout saves in the penalty shootout following a 3-1 first leg victory in Istanbul.

Barry Ferguson’s side are now preparing for a two-legged meeting with fourth-placed La Liga outfit Athletic Bilbao in UEFA's second tier tournament.

Manchester United, Lyon, Tottenham and Lazio are just some of the big clubs that could await the Light Blues if they all make it through to the final in May, but on current form that seems a tall order.

What is clear is that Rangers will be underdogs in most ties, with only one other side left having a smaller squad valuation. But as their memorable run to the Europa League final in 2022 proves, games are not always decided by finances at this level.

Here, Transfermarkt ranks each remaining club's market value based on each players individual value. We take a look at where Rangers rank on this in comparison to the likes of Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs and Ruben Amorim’s Red Devils.

Former Celtic striker and Republic of Ireland icon Tony Cascarino believes Ange Postecoglou is facing the sack at Tottenham Hotspur and believes only one factor can save the 59-year-old from losing his job.

Postecoglou, who was a huge hit as Celtic boss after winning five out of a possible six domestic trophies during his two seasons at the club, is under immense pressure to turn Spurs fortunes around after a difficult second season in North London.

The former Australian national team boss joined Spurs from Celtic on the back of winning a domestic treble with the Hoops and endeared himself to the Tottenham Hotspur faithful in dream fashion by picking up 23 points from his first nine games while breaking the record for most points earned by a Premier League manager in their first nine games.

Postecoglou was named Manager of the Month for his first three months in charge of Tottenham and in doing so became the first manager in history to win the award three times in a row.

His early season form led to optimistic talk of a title charge but despite a dip in fortunes towards the end of his first season, Spurs secured a fifth place finish and a return to Europe while ultimately playing an attractive brand of football which had been missing since the days of Mauricio Pochettino.

Tony Cascarino forecasts doomsday for Ange Postecoglou

Spurs experienced a strong showing in Ange Postecoglou’s first season in the capital but are currently enduring one of their worst campaigns in recent memory. The Lillywhites are 4th in the Premier League, were knocked out of the FA Cup in the fourth round, and having reached the EFL Cup semi-finals, were smashed 4-1 by Liverpool on aggregate.

They have almost no hope of qualifying for Europe through league position and are instead entirely reliant on their form in the Europa League which Cascarino believes is the only factor that can keep the 59-year-old in the job beyond this season.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Cascarino was asked if the only way for Postecoglou to save himself at Tottenham is to go all the way in the Europa League, ahead of facing 2022 winners Frankfurt. He replied: “It feels that way, and whether you agree it’s right or wrong, it feels that that’s going to be the ultimate outcome.

“We’ve heard rumours in midweek of a list being [compiled]; Ange will have had two seasons, and that’s a long time – this year’s been hugely disappointing, really has been.”

Ange Postecoglou is running out of time to save his Spurs job

At the start of the season, Ange Postecoglou boldly told Spurs supporters that he always wins trophies in his second season as he looked to end the club’s 17-year wait for silverware.

However, an early exit in the FA Cup and a humiliating semi-final second leg defeat to Liverpool, have left Postecoglou scrambling for a redeeming factor in what has been a miserable season despite a net spend of £145.90m across the last two transfer windows.

Postecoglou’s team have had a huge injury crisis, particularly in defence, which has marred their campaign, but others have argued that the 59-year-old should have adopted a more pragmatic approach to protect the young defenders such as Archie Gray that were deputising during Micky van de Ven and Christian Romero’s absence.

Spurs have a much cleaner bill of health heading into the final furlong of the season and will need to end the campaign with form more reminiscent of Postecoglou’s early months in the dugout if they are to win the Europa League.

Celtic have made their first signing of the January transfer window - and it’s not one that many supporters would have expected.

The Hoops have added former Tottenham manager David Pleat to their English scouting network at the age of EIGHTY in a bid to unearth fresh new players.

Credited with the signings of Dele Alli, Jan Vertonghen and Ben Davies in recent years, veteran Pleat will be tasked with luring top talent to the Scottish champions from south of the border. According to the Daily Mail, the Parkhead club have made the appointment just a day after Pleat celebrated turning 80.

Loading....

An iconic figure at the North London club, Pleat performed a number of different roles with Spurs before departing at the end of last season. Having managed Nuneaton and Luton Town, he became Tottenham boss in 1986 before exiting the following year.

He went on to manage Leicester City, Luton again and Sheffield Wednesday before returning to White Hart Lane where he became the club’s first director of football in 1998. A spell as interim manager followed in 2003 following Glenn Hoddle's sacking, during which he saw out the 2003/04 campaign in charge and overseen the arrival of ex-Rangers striker Jermain Defoe.

Pleat then undertook advisory roles at various clubs in England before going back to Tottenham for a third time in 2010 after accepting a scouting role - a position he held until last year.

Highly regarded for his ability to spot up-and-coming youngsters, Pleat is known for his role in transforming youth players into key first-team stars. In recent years, he helped Spurs recruit the likes of Alli and Belgian international Vertonghen. He has also worked for the BBC and ITV at several World Cup and European Championships as a commentator.

It’s reported that Pleat was offered the scouting role by Celtic head of recruit Paul Tisdale, with the deal running for 12 months. He will now attend games and keep a watchful eye on certain players across the English leagues.

In-form Tottenham Hotspur star Dejan Kulusevski was the saviour for Ange Postecoglou’s side as they moved a step closer to the Europa League knockout stages with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Rangers at Ibrox.

The Swedish international, who has registered four goals and seven assists across all competitions this season, was brought on at half-time to replace a subdued Timo Werner before scoring a vital equalising strike in the last 15 minutes of the game.

The North London side were a shadow of their best and were nullified by an energetic and aggressive Rangers team that won a number of individual battles across the pitch as they took advantage of the vociferous and lively atmosphere generated by the home support.

Kulusevski, who was his team’s bright light in the contest, was full of praise for Rangers and the incredible Ibrox atmosphere. The 45-time international told PLZ Soccer after the game: “It’s an amazing stadium with great fans…they love watching football. It was a good game.”

Commenting on the Rangers performance, he added: “They played good. I don’t know their situation, I can only focus on my own team.”

Kulusevski went on to join the plaudits of young Moroccan striker Hamza Igamane, who is becoming an increasingly important part of Philippe Clement’s resurgent team after a laboured start to the campaign.

The 24-year-old said: “They played really well and they have a good team, also a strong striker who is very good.”

Igamane joined Rangers from Moroccan side AS Far over the summer as something of an unknown quantity and initially struggled for game time after failing to make the bench in any of his side’s opening three league games.

The 22-year-old made his debut as a late substitute during a 3-0 loss to Celtic but was slowly introduced to the starting line-up after registering his first Rangers goal in a 4-0 Europa League win against FCSB.

Igamane fired in two goals and an assist in his next European game away to Nice and is now on a run of scoring in all of his last three games after finding the net against Kilmarnock, Ross County and Tottenham Hotspur. His form makes him one of the top five leading goalscorers in the Europa League alongside the likes of Samu Aghehowa, Rasmus Hoijulnd, Omar Marmoush and Pedro.

Former Scotland international Don Hutchison said: “He is aggressive in his running. When you look at someone like that you can get on board with him as a manager because you know he is going to work hard. You know, he is a little bit old school.”

A Rangers legend has explained why he’ll support the Light Blues over Tottenham Hotspur.

Former Rangers star Paul Gascoigne has recently conducted an interview that Gers fans will love - the ex-England midfielder he said he will be supporting the Teddy Bears, rather than Tottenham Hotspur, in their upcoming Europa League clash on December 12.

Gascoigne attributes this choice to the differences in treatment at his ex-clubs. At Rangers, Gascoigne says he is ‘welcomed in every way’ and his contributions to the club are given the respect they deserve. Meanwhile, at Spurs, he claimed he was charged £400 for a ‘couple of tickets’ and was not given the same level of acknowledgment.

As well as this, in true Gazza fashion, he had a funny story to tell - this time, he talked about a conversation he had with Light Blues legend Ally McCoist, regarding the latter’s ability to score goals from distance.

What did Paul Gascoigne say in the interview?

Speaking with Sports Casting, Gascoigne said: “At Rangers I’m welcomed in every way. Whereas at Tottenham, I asked for a couple of tickets and they said ‘that’ll be £400 each.’ I was like, wow, with all I did for that club? I made the right choice in going to Rangers, the fans were fantastic and they love me up there. When they play Spurs, I'll be a Rangers fan.”

Gazza also had an amusing anecdote to tell regarding Ally McCoist, in which he said: “Ally scored so many [long range] goals, he just seemed he had a knack for it. He was unbelievable at putting it in the top corner. I said how do you do that?

“He said: honestly Gazza, I'm crap because if I aim for the top corner, it’s going into the stands. What I do is I aim for the goalkeeper, because when I aim for the keeper, it goes in the top corner!”

Kwon will link up with Tottenham Hotspur ace Son Heung-min and Wolves attacker Hwang Hee-chan as he looks to break into the team. Bayern Munich’s centre-back Kim Min-jae is another one of their stars.

Celtic gave him the green light to link up with Hibs on a temporary basis in the last transfer window to get some more game time under his belt. He has since made four league appearances for the Edinburgh outfit.

He rocked up at Celtic Park in July 2023 and penned a five-year deal with the Scottish Premiership champions running until 2028. However, he is yet to play competitively for Brendan Rodgers’ side and was also loaned out to St Mirren during the second-half of the last campaign.

Kwon started his career at Busan IPark and broke into their first-team as a youngster, scoring three goals in 43 outings. He also featured for Gimcheon Sangmu, who are the sports division of the Republic of Korea Armed Forces.

Celtic could see him as one for the future and will be keeping tabs on how he does at both Easter Road and with South Korea. After loaning him in mid-August, Hibs boss David Gray said: “Hyeokkyu provides us with another option in midfield being able to play as both a deeper 6 and as an 8. As a player, he’s a great athlete, he’s very competitive, and comfortable on the ball. He showed these capabilities during an impressive loan spell last season. We’re delighted to bring him to the Club and look forward to working with him.”

Meanwhile, their Sporting Director Malky Mackay added: “We’re really pleased to make Hyeokkyu our ninth signing of the summer transfer window. He is another top professional to add to the First Team group, comes with a good pedigree, and adds a real presence on the pitch. We’d like to thank Brendan Rodgers and Celtic for the smooth handling of the move, and how quickly and efficiently we were able to get this deal done.”

Kwon isn’t the only player out on loan from Celtic right now. They have Gustaf Lagerbielke away at FC Twente, Marco Tilio at Melbourne City, Alexandro Bernabei at Internacional and Johnny Kenny at Shamrock Rovers, as well as Tobi Oluwayemi at Dunfermline Athletic, Dane Murray at Queen’s Park and Ben Summers at Admira Wacker.

The Hoops won 6-0 away at St Johnstone last time out and have won all six of their Scottish Premiership fixtures so far. They are joint-top of the table with Aberdeen and are five points above rivals Rangers as they prepare for their upcoming Champions League away trip to Borussia Dortmund.
