A former Celtic star could make a move to Tottenham Hotspur this summer - and any possible switches may spark a Hoops windfall.
Matt O’Riley left Celtic in a bumper deal for Premier League club Brighton and Hove Albion in 2024 but has had a mixed time at the Seagulls. He has suffered injury, inconsistent selection and was loaned to Marseille, where the midfielder impressed at Ligue 1 level. It has helped spark transfer rumours and Tottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi, who previously managed Brighton and Marseille, is said to like the Danish international.
Spanish giants Atletico Madrid and German heavyweights Borussia Dortmund both have interest in a deal that could be worth £35m according to teamTALK, with Celtic waiting patiently in the wings, amid a windfall opportunity of 10% from whatever profit Brighton make. Should Tottenham survive Premier League relegation fears on the final day against Everton, then a move could be materialised.
Who wants to sign Matt O’Riley this summer?
It’s stated: “Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund are battling to sign Brighton midfielder Matt O’Riley, though TEAMtalk understands that Tottenham are emerging as a surprise potential destination for the midfielder, with Roberto de Zerbi a big fan. Well-placed sources have confirmed that Atletico and Dortmund are both showing what is described as ‘strong’ interest as the summer transfer window approaches.
“Brighton are understood to be open to a permanent sale this summer if the price is right, viewing it as an opportunity to recoup their investment and reshape their midfield. Sources suggest Brighton value O’Riley in the region of £35million, though any deal would activate a sell-on clause benefiting Celtic, upping the price. He also could be one to watch for Tottenham.
“De Zerbi likes O’Riley ‘a lot’, per sources, and if Spurs survive relegation, do not be surprised if they enter the race. Sources say his name has come up in recruitment meetings at Tottenham. Brighton, meanwhile, will be prepared to listen to offers but will not sanction a cut-price exit.”
Matt O’Riley on Brighton future
Speaking last month on his future at Brighton, O’Riley said: “Honestly, right now, I’m not sure. That’s the honest answer. I’ve always said this. I love being here at Brighton. I love what the club stands for, the values, all the stuff I do with the foundation. I have a lot of good relationships with everyone at the club, but, at the same time, as a player, you naturally want to play.
“We train every day to improve ourselves, of course, but you also train to make an impact for your team on a match day. We’ll see how the rest of the season pans out, and, you know, I’d like to hope I’d be involved in some of the games going to the end of the season, but regardless, end of the season, I think I’ll have a bit more clarity on kind of where I stand and how that looks going into the summer.”
