Celtic reportedly have their eyes on two playmakers - including one at Tottenham.
Motherwell’s Elijah Just is a player boss Martin O’Neill has his eye on for that role at the Premiership champions after a breakthrough Fir Park campaign was followed up by three goals for New Zealand at this summer’s World Cup. Another is Tottenham player Alfie Devine.
He has spent the last year on loan at Preston North End who have an option to keep him at Championship level. That’s not yet gone through though and that has paved a possible path for Celtic to enter direct negotiations with Premier League side Tottenham over a fresh set of terms. Motherwell’s holding midfielder, Elliot Watt, is another liked by the Hoops.
What Tottenham player could Celtic sign this summer?
Celtic Shorts state: “Celtic are poised to ramp up their interest in Motherwell midfielder Elijah Just after the New Zealand international impressed at the World Cup. Just has been on Celtic’s radar since his first season at Fir Park, where he quickly established himself as one of the Premiership’s best attacking midfielders. Following his World Cup exploits, Celtic are now expected to step up their efforts to land the midfielder, although they face competition from clubs in Ligue 1 and the English Championship. The Scottish champions are also keeping an eye on developments surrounding Motherwell midfielder Elliot Watt.
“Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Alfie Devine continues to be monitored by Celtic as they assess midfield reinforcements. O’Neill, Mark Fotheringham and Shaun Maloney were among those in attendance earlier this year to watch Preston North End’s Championship clash with Queens Park Rangers, where Devine featured during his loan spell.
“The Championship side must trigger their purchase option before tonight’s deadline. The agreed clause is understood to be worth £4.5 million, potentially rising to £6 million through add-ons. If Preston do not complete the deal, Celtic would have to negotiate a fresh transfer fee directly with Tottenham.”
What has Elijah Just said about a transfer this summer?
Speaking of a possible move this summer, Motherwell’s Just said: “In terms of transfer in the window, I guess that’s my agent’s job. I hope he is busy at the moment. I will speak to him and in football you never know. I will just stay focused and keep trying to get better. The World Cup has given me added belief and also motivation to keep pushing.
“There was a point in my career, one or two years ago, where I wasn’t quite sure what level I was going to be. I was a little bit stuck and maybe plateaued a little bit, so now you have a little bit of a new energy and new belief. I definitely want to test myself see how far I can go. It’s something that everybody wants to do. Coming here gave me a taste of playing against top, top players. So we’ll see what happens.”
