Eddie Howe has been under fire this week. And few managers in football needed a win as much as the Newcastle United head coach. Well, maybe Thomas Frank might disagree.

A poor run of results has seen the Magpies slide down the table in recent weeks, as well as exit the Carabao Cup at the semi final stage. Howe’s team were booed off just days ago at St James’ Park following a particularly damaging home defeat to Brentford.

Newcastle United flip the narrative with away day win at Spurs

So, it’s fair to say few had high expectations of the Magpies heading to Tottenham Hotspur, even if the hosts had won just twice on home turf this campaign.

However, a dynamic display saw Joe Willock, Anthony Elanga and Jacob Ramsey run riot in North London, as the Magpies recorded a well-earned and deserved 2-1 win, even if the scoreline flattered the hosts.

Malick Thiaw and Ramsey scored the goals for United.

And the win went down well with Premier League and Newcastle United record goalscorer, Alan Shearer.

Speaking on X, he said: “Big win. Big 3 points. Much better in terms of energy. The changes worked.”

That comment was an undoubted ringing endorsement towards Howe, after he’d been under pressure.

Speaking about the performance earlier in the game, Shearer also said: “They deserved that goal. It’s been coming. Much the better team in that first half.”

Eddie Howe reflects on Newcastle United’s 2-1 win v Tottenham Hotspur

Reflecting on the win, Howe said: “Yeah, great response from the players. I have to pay tribute to them tonight. I think they really did inspire each other and help each other. I thought it was one of our best performances of the season.

“Dominant display, showed our quality. We had players going down with cramp at the end and showing signs that we had maxed out on the pitch. That's all I ever ask.

“I'm very grateful to have the group of players that I have. I think they're terrific professionals and a great day for us.

Newcastle United issue official Bruno Guimaraes injury update

Newcastle recorded only their third Premier League away win of the campaign to move back into the top half of the table, closing the gap on the top five to eight points.

The only negative to emerge from the night was Bruno Guimaraes’ withdrawal in stoppage time. The Brazilian had only just returned following four games out with an ankle injury, though that isn’t the issue this time.

Asked for an update on Guimaraes, Howe replied: “I'm not sure. He's a little bit worried. He said he’s not sure he's never had a problem with his hamstrings before, so is it cramp? was it a muscle problem?

“It probably feels more of an injury to me but let's wait and see. We'll try and stay positive at this moment.”
