Tottenham Hotspur have liked Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton for a few seasons, according to Alasdair Gold, but he can't see them forking out £100m to secure his signature.
Wharton has enjoyed an impressive rise in recent years, moving to Crystal Palace from Championship side Blackburn Rovers. The England international has quickly developed into one of Oliver Glasner's key players, and he's starting to attract interest from other clubs in the Premier League.
So far in the summer transfer window, Tottenham have signed West Ham United star Mohammed Kudus, while they also managed to turn Mathys Tel's loan move from Bayern Munich into a permanent deal. The north London outfit appear to be in the market for further reinforcements as they prepare to enter a new era under former Brentford manager Thomas Frank, who joined the club after Ange Postecoglou was sacked.
Spurs won't pay £100m fee
Writing in a Q&A for Football.London, Gold has shared an update on Tottenham's interest in Crystal Palace midfielder Wharton. The respected journalist confirms that Wharton is a player Tottenham like, and they considered making a move to secure his signature before he joined the Eagles from Blackburn...
"Wharton is certainly a player that Tottenham have liked for a few seasons and they considered making a move for him when Palace signed him from Blackburn early last year for a deal worth up to £22m.
Could I see Spurs paying a £100million fee for him? I would be surprised if Tottenham shelled out that amount right now and if they did pay such a sum it'd probably be for someone more established than having played 36 Premier League games."
As Gold mentioned, it's unlikely that Tottenham would be willing to part ways with £100m to sign Wharton, who is still relatively inexperienced when it comes to Premier League football. GIVEMESPORT sources claimed back in April that Palace could demand up to £100m to allow Wharton to depart, and it's no surprise considering the impact he's made at Selhurst Park.
