If you were to ask most Tottenham Hotspur fans who deserves to be the club’s Player of the Season, I’d suspect most of them would say “nobody.” Well SOMEONE has to win the award, and according to the Official Supporters’ Clubs, One Hotspur members and Junior One Hotspur members, that player is… Archie Gray.

Look, I really don’t know how to feel about this. It’s been a rotten season, the performances have mostly been bleak and unspectacular, and there aren’t many players that have stood out. Archie has, without question, improved significantly from last season (where he was statistically one of the worst players at the club, not his fault), and he’s also a Nice English Lad™ with a Bright Future™ ahead of him.

But Player of the Season? I know the options are all weak, but Richarlison is RIGHT THERE with a club-leading 15 goal contributions (11G + 4A in all competitions). That’s not, y’know, wonderful, but the stats don’t lie and Richy has stepped up with some crucial goals when it mattered. Archie had a nice run of games when Igor Tudor was in charge, but it’s hard for me to look at his entire body of work compared to numerous others on the team and say that he’s been our best player.

I like Archie Gray. It is not a knock on him to say that awarding him Player of the Season is WILD, however. If the award were the That Hotspur Boy Nice Award, I’d absolutely give it to Archie (or maybe Xavi Simons, lol). I’m also happy that he’s getting recognition from the club and fans for his improvement this season. He’s got a bright future and I’m looking forward to what he can do for us in the coming years. But this feels more like fans are just unhappy at everybody so they’re rewarding the nice handsome kid with broccoli hair who doesn’t upset anyone. Maybe, if the options are that bad, you just don’t do that award this season?

Or maybe I’m just cranky this morning. What do y’all think? I’ll put a poll in The Feed a little later.
