Tottenham will hope to build on their first Premier League win last weekend when they face Aston Villa on Sunday as they battle to move out of the relegation spots.

For a brief moment, Spurs climbed out of the drop zone, but results elsewhere, namely a last-minute win for West Ham, ensured they would spend yet another week in danger.

Aston Villa, meanwhile, come into this one off the back of two 1-0 results of their own, though neither went their way. After being unable to respond to former Spurs man Ryan Sessegnon’s opener against Fulham, they also fell short in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final against Nottingham Forest, where a Chris Wood penalty proved decisive.

Aston Villa vs Tottenham: Head to head record

The two sides have already met twice this season at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Aston Villa came out 2-1 winners in the reverse Premier League fixture before repeating the same scoreline in the FA Cup third round.

Spurs are winless in their last four meetings against Villa, with their most recent victory coming in November 2024, when Ange Postecoglou’s side ran riot in a 4-1 win.

That result remains Tottenham’s only victory in their last nine meetings with Villa, with eight of those matches going in favour of the Midlands club.

Tottenham team news

The win at Wolves came at a cost for Tottenham, who lost both Dominic Solanke and Xavi Simons to injuries that are expected to keep them out for the remainder of the season.

They join an already lengthy list of absentees, including Cristian Romero, Dejan Kulusevski and Wilson Odobert.

There are also doubts surrounding Pape Matar Sarr, Destiny Udogie and Guglielmo Vicario heading into this fixture, with Roberto De Zerbi expected to provide further clarity closer to kick-off.

James Maddison will be part of the matchday squad yet again, although he may not feature on the pitch.

Aston Villa team news

Amadou Onana picked up a hamstring injury early in the second half against Nottingham Forest and will miss this fixture alongside Boubacar Kamara, the only other confirmed absentee.

Predicted line-ups

TOTTENHAM: Kinsky; Porro, Danso, Van de Ven, Spence; Bissouma, Bentancur, Gallagher; Kolo Muani, Richarlison, Tel.

ASTON VILLA: Martinez; Cash, Konsa, Torres, Digne; Tielemans, Luiz; Rogers, McGinn, Sancho; Watkins

Our prediction

Losing Xavi Simons is a huge blow for Tottenham, especially after his standout display against Brighton the week before last. It leaves a real lack of creativity in midfield, and at the moment, Spurs simply do not have many natural creators in those central areas.

That puts a lot of responsibility on Mathys Tel, who arguably comes closest to filling that creative void in the final third. We have also handed Pedro Porro a start on the right wing, largely because Spurs have struggled to generate chances from that side in recent weeks, with Souza and Spence slotting into the full-back roles behind him.

Villa’s biggest threat remains Morgan Rogers. He may have been quiet recently, but he knows he has to step up for a spot in England’s World Cup squad. Give him even half a yard near the box, and he has the technique to find the top corner. That means Antonin Kinsky, who was outstanding against Wolves, could be in for a busy evening once again.

De Zerbi’s start to life at Tottenham has been somewhat steady (one win, one draw and one defeat), but those performances have not fully reflected his attacking principles just yet. Against a Villa side that have consistently overperformed their expected goals, we feel this could be the game where those ideas begin to show.
