Tottenham Hotspur will not appreciate what an Atletico Madrid forward has said about Cristian Romero as speculation over the centre-back’s future continues to run rife ahead of the summer window.

Spurs fans may already be sick of the rumours surrounding Romero’s future, which has been non-stop over the last few weeks.

It has been widely reported that Atletico Madrid have contacted Cristian Romero and have received a positive response from the Spurs vice-captain.

Some outlets have even claimed that Romero may agitate this summer in order to force a move to Spain, which potentially poses a big problem for Daniel Levy and Tottenham.

Julian Alvarez reacts to Cristian Romero transfer speculation

Over the last few days, it has emerged that Daniel Levy is unhappy that Atletico have made their interest in Cristian Romero public rather than negotiating through the right channels.

The Spurs chairman and the decision-makers at Hotspur Way will certainly not appreciate what Julian Alvarez has now said about their player.

The former Manchester City man has admitted that he is keen to link up with his international teammate at the Metropolitano Stadium this summer.

When asked if he expects Romero to sign for Atletico, Alvarez told AS: “I hope so! I hope it happens. He’s a great player. One of the best centre-backs in the world, in my opinion. A teammate on the national team and a great person. Such a great addition to the team would be a great help.”

Tottenham and Atletico still have a big difference to iron out

While it seems clear that the former Juventus man is in favour of moving to the Spanish capital, the two clubs are thought to be a long way apart in their valuations of the player.

Some sources have reported that Tottenham could demand as much as €80m (£68m) for Cristian Romero while Atletico are only willing to offer around €40m-€50m (£34m-£42.5m).

If it is true that the La Liga club’s conduct has irritated Levy, one can be sure that the Spurs chairman will not make things easy for Diego Simeone’s men at the negotiating table.
