Crystal Palace have been bolstered by a new signing in time for Sunday’s Premier League clash against Newcastle United (kick-off 3pm).
Palace have completed a club-record £35million deal for winger Brennan Johnson from London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
The 24-year-old attracted interest from AFC Bournemouth with Antoine Semenyo seemingly destined to join Manchester City but has agreed to move to Selhurst Park after talks with manager Oliver Glasner on Thursday.
Crystal Palace set to sign Brennan Johnson in time to face Newcastle United
Johnson completed the formalities of the transfer on Friday and while Palace announced the transfer after the Premier League’s 12pm registration deadline for weekend matches, the BBC reports that he is eligible to feature against Newcastle.
The Wales international has already played twice at St James’ Park this season, having started both games for Spurs. The Magpies won their Carabao Cup tie 2-0 before being held to a 2-2 draw in the Premier League last month.
Johnson joined Spurs in a £47.5m deal from Nottingham Forest in 2023 and scored the winner as the club ended their 17-year wait for silverware by Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final last season.
However, Johnson's minutes have been limited under new manager Thomas Frank this season, scoring four goals in 22 appearances.
Eddie Howe previews Newcastle United v Crystal Palace
Newcastle beat Burnley 3-1 on Tuesday night to record only their second Premier League away win of the campaign and will look to follow that up on home turf.
Eddie Howe’s side are unbeaten in their last 10 home matches, while Palace are winless in six matches having some key players to the African Cup of Nations and injury, including winger Ismaila Sarr and full-back Daniel Munoz.
Palace do, however, have the fifth best away record in the division with five wins, one draw and three losses.
Previewing the visit of Oliver Glasner’s side, Howe said: “Solid, tough to score against and they've got good attackers the other way as well. I think it goes without saying how good a job I think Oliver's done.
“I’ve watched them closely in the preparation for this game and yes, they've lost a few key players for different reasons, whether it be injury or African Cup of Nations, ut they're still a very good team and a team that we can't underestimate and we won't underestimate. We don't underestimate any opponent.
“Yeah, a game that we can do well in if we're at our best levels and we're boosted by the fact we're back at home after it feels like a long time away. But it's a game that we need to prepare well for.”
