There’s been a TON of news this morning and it’s all been outgoing. We’ve had a trio of outgoing loan reports, and now a follow-up on the Kevin Danso transfer story that broke a couple of days ago. According to the BBC’s Sami Mockbel, Sunderland are in negotiations with Tottenham Hotspur over the transfer of Austrian central defender Kevin Danso. Spurs are also said to be looking for a replacement in what’s left of the transfer window.
Danso apparently went to Roberto De Zerbi in the past couple of days and said he wanted to leave Tottenham, ostensibly because of playing time concerns. Spurs have brought in two defenders this summer — Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke — to play with new club captain Micky van de Ven. Danso would’ve been the fourth defender (De Zerbi has said he wants two in every position) and is also considered association trained which would be useful for European competition next season.
This is Sunderland’s second approach for Danso; they proposed a loan deal last week that was rejected, though that was before Danso said he wanted to leave. This is apparently for a permanent transfer.
If Dasno’s not happy, he’s not happy and it seems he’d like out to join a club where he can get more regular minutes with Spurs only playing one match a week for most of this season. Fair enough, I guess, though if he goes Spurs lose a huge aerial presence and a stabilizing defender in the back line. That said, De Zerbi has set the precedent for “if you want out, we’ll get you out” in this year of transition, and fair enough. We’ll have to see whether Spurs bring in a new player before the window closes tomorrow, or if they end up promoting Kota Takai, which seems somewhat unlikely considering we’ve barely seen him play, even in preseason.
