Lucas Bergvall enjoyed a standout debut season with Tottenham.

The Swede arrived at Tottenham last July and quickly climbed up the ranks to cement his position as a starter in North London.

Therefore, the 19-year-old is bound to be left scratching his head after a recent announcement away from Hotspur Way.

Bergvall not nominated for PFA Young Player of the Year award

Last month, Bergvall completed a clean sweep of the Player of the Season awards at Tottenham.

The midfielder received the Official Supporters’ Clubs (OSC) Player of the Season and both Player of the Season awards from One Hotspur Members and One Hotspur Juniors, becoming the first teenager since Glenn Hoddle to achieve this feat.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Bergvall also played an important role in Spurs’ UEFA Europa League-winning campaign before his injury. However, that has not afforded him recognition from his peers.

The Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) announced on Thursday (19 June) the final six for their Young Player of the Year award. The nominees included Liam Delap, Dean Huijsen, Milos Kerkez, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Ethan Nwaneri and Morgan Rogers.

But despite a sensational individual season at Spurs, Bergvall failed to make the cut.

Bergvall should have been selected over Nwaneri

While most of the nominees are deserving of their spot, Bergvall should have been chosen over Nwaneri. The Arsenal winger was not as consistent, nor made as much of an impact for his team.

Bergvall made 45 appearances for Tottenham last season, while Nwaneri made 37 for Arsenal. While only eight games separated the two, Bergvall played almost double the number of minutes.

This demonstrates that Bergvall played a bigger role for Spurs while Nwaneri struggled to get out from under Bukayo Saka’s shadow.

Spurs’ Premier League finish has most likely played a role in the final decision. But team achievements should come secondary to individual performance for an individual award.

And even if team achievements are to be taken into account, surely a top-two season isn’t something to rave about if Arsenal finished that season trophyless.

Bergvall played a big role in securing Tottenham their first trophy in 17 years.

Nevertheless, under a new manager and with a fresh season ahead, the 19-year-old will be in with a chance of winning the award next season.
