Manchester United’s league rivals Tottenham Hotspur are in the hunt for a new manager. They have parted ways with Ange Postecoglou and are weighing up their options. The London club finished 17th in the table this past season.
Meanwhile, the Red Devils were placed in 15th after their final day win over Aston Villa. The pair also locked horns in the Europa League final in Bilbao last month. Spurs won 1-0 after Brennan Johnson’s first-half goal.
Former Manchester United coach eyed by Brentford
Spurs want Brentford manager Thomas Frank to replace Postecoglou and as per The Mirror, the Bees would target ex-United coach Kieran McKenna at Ipswich Town if they lost their popular head coach. McKenna, 39, was appointed by the Tractor Boys back in 2021. They are back in the Championship now following their relegation from the Premier League.
The Northern Irishman moved to Old Trafford back in 2016 and initially became their Under-18’s boss. He then worked his way up to joining their first-team coaching staff. McKenna then cut ties with the Red Devils when his move to Portman Road came about and he has impressed in his first number one managerial role in the game.
He guided Ipswich to back-to-back promotions from the third tier to the top flight. Despite finishing in the bottom three with Southampton and Leicester City, his reputation in the game is still decent. It remains to be seen at this stage whether the Tractor Boys will be able to keep hold of him amid expected interest from Brentford.
What now for former Manchester United coach Kieran McKenna?
Time will tell whether McKenna will remain at Ipswich or move on in the near future. If Frank leaves for Spurs, he would fit the bill for Brentford. He was linked with Brighton and Hove Albion 12 months ago but stayed put.
He was subsequently handed a new four-year deal running until 2028. After extending his contract, he said: “I am extremely proud to have signed a new contract with the Club. We have enjoyed incredible success together over the last two seasons and I’m excited to have the opportunity and responsibility of leading this fantastic Club into its first season in the Premier League in 22 years.
“Preparation and planning for the challenge ahead has been ongoing since we won promotion at the beginning of May, with plenty of work still to do before the start of the new season at what is such an exciting time for everyone at the Club. I am so happy to have committed my future to taking the next step with Ipswich Town and am really excited for what's ahead as we continue this journey together.”
Their CEO Mark Ashton added: “We are delighted Kieran has further committed his future to the Club. Success brings its own challenges and there has been considerable speculation in recent weeks, but Kieran and I have continued to communicate throughout, often several times a day, as we plan for the Club’s first Premier League season in a generation. For Kieran to have signed a new contract is a significant boost, heading into such an important campaign, as we continue the hard work in preparation for the coming season.”
