Newcastle United are set to be without Bruno Guimaraes until mid-April, according to reports in Brazil.

The Magpies’ captain started against Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday night on just his second start following four matches out with an ankle injury.

Guimaraes helped United to a 2-1 victory in North London before being forced off in stoppage time.

Speaking immediately after the game, head coach Eddie Howe said: “I'm not sure, he is a little bit worried. I think that he's not sure [because] he said he's never had a problem with his hamstrings before, so is it cramp? Was it a muscle problem?

“Probably feels more of an injury to me, but let's wait and see.”

Guimaraes then wrote on Instagram: “Very happy with the win! This looks much more like what we’re capable of doing. Great character from the team. Once again, I hope it’s nothing too serious and that I can be back soon.”

Howe provided a further update on Guimaraes on Friday morning ahead of Saturday’s trip to Aston Villa in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

“With Bruno, we're awaiting the full extent of the hamstring injury,” Howe said. “Bruno, the other night, I don't think he got the injury when he got the injury. I don't think there was any pre-injury.

“Obviously, at that stage of the game, he was getting fatigued. Maybe on a normal situation with a full bench, we would maybe have taken him off before that moment - but we didn't. We ran out of midfielders. So he stayed on the pitch and unfortunately got injured.”

After undergoing further assessment, ESPN Brazil has claimed the Magpies are expected to be without Guimaraes for “at least two months”, keeping him sidelined until the middle of April.

It means Newcastle will have to find a way without their talisman until the final month of the campaign. Howe’s side have never won a Premier League match that Guimaraes has missed since he joined the club in January 2022.

As well as missing several key matches for United, Guimaraes will also sit out of Brazil’s upcoming friendly matches against France and Croatia.

The report adds that Guimaraes will soon travel to Brazil to receive treatment from Rodrigo Lasmar, the national team doctor.

Newcastle United need Lewis Miley and Joelinton back

Guimaraes’ extended absence has left Sandro Tonali, Jacob Ramsey and Joe Willock as the only available central midfielders.

Joelinton and Lewis Miley have been missing in recent games but Howe hopes the pair aren’t too far away from returning.

“With Lewy, we're waiting sort of day by day,” Howe said. “He's got a sort of a dead leg. So he got a bad knock to his thigh. I think there's a little bit of muscle damage on the knock.

“So sort of having scans on it sort of every few days to see how that is. We don't think it's going to be long-term. Hopefully, he'll be back pretty quickly. So let's wait and see on that one.

“Joelinton is doing really well. I don't think he'll make this game, but he's not going to be too far away beyond this game. So he's desperate to be back involved as he normally is, but that's a great sign for us.

“That means he's feeling good about his body and he's very positive.”
