Tottenham are continuing to build a core of young, talented defenders at Hotspur Way.
Daniel Levy might soon need to replace Cristian Romero, who continues to be linked with Atletico Madrid.
However, it looks as though the Spurs Chairman might not need to spend big money, as Tottenham already have a plethora of talented young centre-backs on their books.
The Lilywhites confirmed the arrival of Japanese international centre-back Kōta Takai from J1 League side Kawasaki Frontale on Tuesday (8 July), while another player has opted to put pen to paper with Spurs despite interest from Manchester City.
Cayon Hanson signs two-year scholarship at Tottenham
Tottenham have placed significant focus on recruiting and developing young players in recent seasons.
MORE SPURS STORIES
Mikey Moore is a shining example of the rewards of youth investment if done right, with the 17-year-old already a UEFA Europa League winner.
As a result, Spurs will look to continue this trend, and according to Lilywhite Rose (2 July), have signed Hanson along with several others on a two-year scholarship.
But Tottenham were not the only club to recognise his potential, and Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – revealed that Spurs had to fight off City for his signature.
“Hanson is a tall, left-footed centre-back,” Wenham said.
“He’s a talented player, and I know that he was wanted by Manchester City, so that was a big deal for Tottenham to get over the line.
“Midfielders Ty Tingey and Cameron Thomas, who also signed scholarships, have already made their Under-18s debuts. There’s a lot of quality in that group, and I’m looking forward to seeing how they develop.”
Hanson will be a good long-term investment
Tottenham have their fair share of defenders climbing through the ranks of their academy at the moment.
However, Hanson has the potential to become a key player in the future. He is one of two centre-backs who were offered a scholarship in his group. Therefore, this indicates that Spurs see potential in him.
Hanson is left-footed, and there is a maturity about how he conducts himself on and off the ball.
With Tottenham looking to invest more in their young stars, Hanson could benefit from rejecting City.
