Celtic are ‘closely following’ the progress of free agent midfielder Yves Bissouma as a solution to their problems in the middle of the park.
The former Brighton and Spurs midfielder left the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium at the end of last season and is now without a club. Dutch giants Ajax and Turkish side Istanbul Basaksehir are also reportedly interested in the 29-year old Mali international.
The Hoops are looking for midfield reinforcements after they were overran in this area against LASK Linz in their Champions League capitulation. In the qualification play-off this was a notable area of concern as the Hoops blew a four-goal aggregate lead to crash out of the competition.
Celtic ‘closely following’ progress of £30m man
According to Mauritanian football journalist Lassana Camara: “Ajax Amsterdam enters the race for Yves Bissouma! Free since his departure from Tottenham, the Malian international Yves Bissouma is attracting several European clubs as the transfer window draws to a close. Ajax Amsterdam has reportedly expressed interest in the Malian midfielder and would like to bring him to the Netherlands. In Turkey, İstanbul Başakşehir FK is also interested in his profile. In Scotland, Celtic Glasgow is also closely following the player's situation.”
The midfielder is seeking a new challenge after nine seasons in the Premier League. He was a fan favourite at the AMEX Stadium after signing from French side Lille in 2018. After four successful years on the south coast, he made the switch to North London for £30m after being signed by then boss Antonio Conte. While at Tottenham, Bissouma was a regular feature under former Hoops gaffer Ange Postecoglou and was part of the side that lifted the Europa League.
Celtic seek midfielder reinforcements
The Hoops struggled to keep the ball in Austria on Thursday night, partly down to the energy and physicality of their opponents. Bissouma would help in this area due to his composure on the ball and aggression in the middle of the park.
Celtic have already signed German midfielder Mika Baur in this area from Paderborn for around £6.8m. However, the result through the week proved more work is still needing to be done. Canada international Nico Sigur has been linked with a seven-figure move from Croatian side Hadjuk Split, however Belgian outfit Genk are now reportedly winning the transfer race.
A £9m move for Torino midfielder Gvidas Gineitis has also been discussed but this has now hit a roadblock due to the Champions League elimination. The Lithuanian was identified as a potential replacement for Belgian maestro Arne Engels - who left for an EFL Championship record-breaking fee of £22m to West Ham earlier this month.
