Chelsea and Bayern Munich are both ahead of Tottenham in the queue to sign a highly-rated Manchester United player in January.

Thomas Frank is not content with his midfield, at least that is what the evidence suggests. The Tottenham Hotspur manager has repeatedly changed his starting lineup this season, particularly switching things up in the middle of the pitch.

With January fast approaching, rumours have been swirling about which midfielders have caught the interest of Spurs, and one name to have been mentioned is Kobbie Mainoo.

The Manchester United star is unhappy with his lack of minutes this season, and one report has stated that Mainoo wants to remain in the Premier League.

Tottenham have fallen behind in the race for Kobbie Mainoo

Mainoo is looking to secure an imminent move in order to boost his World Cup chances, but Caught Offside report that it is Bayern Munich and Chelsea who lead the race for his signature.

The 20-year-old is prioritising where he can be a guaranteed starter, and this has increased the likelihood of a move to Napoli. Of course, this is the team where Scott McTominay has enjoyed so much success since departing Old Trafford.

Spurs are still in a 12-club race to sign Mainoo, but they will have to come up with a special form of persuasion to fend off the likes of Bayern and Chelsea.

MORE SPURS STORIES

This all comes after the Man United player’s brother was spotted wearing a ‘free Kobbie Mainoo’ t-shirt at Old Trafford last week, where the midfielder was benched once again.

Spurs already have a young midfield

Tottenham have two teenage midfielders in Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall, while Pape Matar Sarr is still only 23 years old. There is also Xavi Simons, who will not celebrate his 23rd birthday until April next year.

Mainoo would therefore match the profile of the midfield players Spurs have often opted to sign in recent transfer windows. However, it is a little surprising that Tottenham want to bring yet another youngster to the club when Frank appears to have more trust in his senior players.

Rodrigo Bentancur and Joao Palhinha have been given a lot of starts for Spurs, while the younger players have been in and out of the first team. This could concern Mainoo, because there is no guarantee he will be a regular starter if he moves to North London.
