Tottenham Hotspur will hope to win their first game at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge in eight years as they look to widen the gap between themselves and the relegation zone before the final day of the season.

Roberto De Zerbi’s men were in the middle of a dream three-game Premier League unbeaten run, that was until Mathys Tel decided it was the perfect time to attempt a bicycle clearance in his own box against Leeds United and ended up conceding a penalty.

The Frenchman did spare himself from what would have been inevitable criticism from a fanbase watching their side fight relegation, however, after scoring a brilliant opener in a 1-1 draw that extended Spurs’ six-month-long home winless run.

Despite those dropped points that may yet prove costly, Tottenham still sit two points clear of the drop zone thanks to consecutive narrow victories over Wolves and Aston Villa before that. With just two games left to play, every point will feel massive now.

There may also be some hope for Spurs at Stamford Bridge despite their dreadful record there, especially with Chelsea arriving on the back of a seven-game Premier League winless run. Across all competitions, the Blues have managed just two wins in their last 12 matches, both coming in the FA Cup, and they head into this clash after FA Cup final heartbreak following a 1-0 defeat to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

Somewhere in the middle of that miserable run, Liam Rosenior was shown the door and Callum McFarlane was appointed interim manager. McFarlane did at least steady things slightly in his most recent Premier League outing as Chelsea fought back from behind to secure a 1-1 draw against Liverpool.

Chelsea vs Tottenham: Head to head record

The reverse fixture was genuinely painful viewing for every Tottenham supporter. Spurs recorded an xG of just 0.05, their lowest since such data began being recorded in Premier League football.

Do not let the 1-0 scoreline fool you either. Guglielmo Vicario was the only reason the result stayed remotely respectable for Tottenham that afternoon, producing save after save to keep Chelsea at bay. The one moment he could not rescue his side from their own mistakes eventually led to the winning goal.

That said, the last time Spurs beat Chelsea came back in 2023 when Cristian Stellini guided Tottenham to a 2-0 victory over Graham Potter’s Chelsea side.

Tottenham team news

Hero from the reverse fixture, Guglielmo Vicario, remains a doubt for this one despite returning to training, although that may not necessarily change much given Antonin Kinsky is likely to keep his place regardless after a string of outstanding performances over the last few weeks.

Dejan Kulusevski also remains unavailable, with Roberto De Zerbi suggesting the Swede could return to training next week, although he is not expected to be match ready yet.

Cristian Romero, Xavi Simons, Mohamed Kudus and Wilson Odobert are the other confirmed absentees. There is some hope that Dominic Solanke could return.

One huge positive from the Leeds game, however, was James Maddison finally making his long-awaited return from injury. It was the midfielder’s first competitive appearance in over a year and, despite only a brief cameo, he looked like a player who had never been away. If deemed fully fit, there is every chance he could start here.

Chelsea team news

Robert Sanchez, Alejandro Garnacho and Pedro Neto all returned to the squad for the FA Cup final after brief spells on the sideline, with Garnacho and Neto both appearing off the bench while Sanchez started.

Estevao and Jamie Gittens are the only confirmed absentees for the hosts.

Predicted line-ups

TOTTENHAM: Kinsky; Porro, Danso, Van de Ven, Udogie; Gallagher, Bentancur, Palhinha; Kolo Muani, Richarlison, Tel

CHELSEA: Sanchez; Gusto, Fofana, Colwill, Hato; James, Caicedo, Fernandez; Palmer, Cucurella, Joao Pedro

Our prediction

Everything could go horribly wrong or brilliantly right for Tottenham here. A win or even a draw combined with a West Ham defeat would be enough to secure Premier League survival heading into the final day. On the flip side, defeat at Stamford Bridge alongside a West Ham victory would drag Spurs straight back into the relegation zone with one game remaining.

Keep an eye on Mathys Tel. The youngster will know he played a huge part in Tottenham dropping points against Leeds last week and he will be desperate to put that right. The problem for him is that Chelsea remain defensively solid across the pitch despite their poor run of results.

Moises Caicedo and Cole Palmer, in particular, could cause major issues for Tottenham. Once Caicedo wins the ball back and Palmer gets turned towards goal, suddenly you have a serious problem on your hands.

Then there is James Maddison. Even in a short cameo against Leeds, the midfielder instantly transformed the feel of Tottenham’s attack and looked like someone who had never spent a year out injured. If Spurs are to survive, Maddison will probably be the man leading that fight across these final two matches.
