Chiesa signs, Richarlison axed, £60m bargain

If Tottenham Hotspur are going to build on last season and improve on their fifth-placed finish in the Premier League, their attacking players simply must be better.

Heung-min Son finished as Spurs' top goalscorer last season with 17 goals in 36 games. Richarlison improved on his debut campaign in north London with 12 while Dejan Kulusevski (eight goals) and Brennan Johnson (five goals) struggled for inconsistency.

This season, Spurs have lofty ambitions for the 2024/25 season. After missing out on Champions League football to Aston Villa, Postecoglou's men will look to juggle their Europa League commitments with the Premier League and domestic cups.

To do that, Tottenham have to look at their attacking options. Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall, who signed in January, have arrived this summer but the forward line remains a problem. "We're working hard to bring players in and it's a process that you sometimes have to be patient with," Postecoglou said on Friday.

"But in terms of what we set out to do, that’s still the plan and you have to stay disciplined with that. Sometimes the timings don’t work out and it doesn’t happen as quickly as you want and you don’t get them (players) in at the right time but I think it’s really important you stay disciplined and not run off and chase other things."

Timo Werner's loan move has been made permanent to give Spurs a number of options. But in a dream scenario, Tottenham's attack still needs strengthening. Step forward, Federico Chiesa and Ivan Toney.

According to reports, Juventus star Chiesa is thought to be edging closer to a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The Italy international, who has only 12 months left on his contract, is expected to finalise a transfer to Tottenham for between £25.3milllion (€30m) and £29.5million (€35m).

Chiesa can play at centre-forward and either wing. Strong on his right foot, he offers an option on the left to cut inside and down the right as an out-and-out winger. Spurs have players for their positions already but the quality of output has caused question marks.

Having Chiesa, Johnson, Kulusevski and Manor Solomon for the wide positions would give Postecoglou a good headache to have. At centre-forward, the problem is not as straightforward.

Son is Spurs' most important player and after another successful campaign in front of goal, he's likely to remain as the first-choice centre-forward. However, behind the South Korean, Werner and Alejo Veliz have proved uninspiring.

Werner managed only two goals in 14 appearances for Tottenham during his loan spell last season. His permanent move hasn't convinced everybody but the Germany international has a record of scoring goals. But in an ideal world, a proven Premier League centre-forward is what Tottenham need.

For some, Son is better off on the right wing. As we saw for so many years with Harry Kane, working with a strong centre-forward has been a proven success. Toney is the subject of interest from a number of clubs this summer but with his contract expiring next year, Brentford face a race against time to cash-in.

It's understood that the England international is valued at £60m by the Bees, but concerns that he may run his contract down could force them to accept a fee below that valuation. Should Toney join, Richarlison's future would be in serious doubt.

If Postecoglou was scratching his head over his preferred front three before, he wouldn't be now. Son-Toney-Chiesa would be a dangerous trio for any Premier League defence.
