Tottenham expect several departures this summer as Thomas Frank looks to streamline the squad.
According to the official club website, Spurs have 31 senior players registered on their books, which does not even include academy products who have contributed to the first team, such as Mikey Moore.
Frank is keen to bring in new faces like Mohammed Kudus, but will first have to offload some players, both to recoup finances and free up space.
Other clubs are looking to capitalise on the Lilywhites’ need to slim down their overinflated squad, with Colchester United the latest beneficiaries of this situation.
Jaden Williams joins Colchester United after leaving Tottenham
The increased productivity of Tottenham’s academy was one of the highlights of last season, with a handful of young prospects like Reiss Elliott-Parris recently signing new contracts.
MORE SPURS STORIES
With first-team debuts given to Callum Olusesi and Damola Ajayi last season, Spurs are facing equally difficult decisions to regulate their numbers within the academy.
As a result, Jaden Williams confirmed his departure from Tottenham via an Instagram post (1 June), posting a heartfelt message which started, “After 14 unforgettable years, the time has come for me to embark on a new chapter.”
The forward featured in all but four games for Spurs ‘Under-21 team last term, making 12 starts and scoring five goals.
Ultimately, he was released by the Lilywhites, with Colchester United confirming almost three weeks later via their Instagram (20 June) that they had snapped up the opportunity to sign the 20-year-old on a long-term contract.
Levy must be more ruthless with outgoings
Tottenham have been held to ransom by players on long-term lucrative contracts not wanting to leave North London, despite no longer being in the first team picture.
Daniel Levy loathes not getting the maximum value out of a deal, but the 63-year-old must take a more ruthless approach this summer.
Inevitably, there will be players that Frank will not see as part of his plans, and Levy must be prepared to accept what he can get for those players to maintain harmony within the squad and ensure unnecessary wages are not being paid.
