Tottenham Hotspur have made an enquiry to sign Manchester United target Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United, according to GIVEMESPORT senior correspondent Ben Jacobs, as they look to further ramp up their summer transfer plans.
Tottenham look set to be one of the busiest Premier League teams in the summer transfer window, with two new faces already through the door in Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi after Spurs completed the signings of the duo on free transfers.
Even though the summer window only officially opened on Monday, the north London outfit are already actively working on bringing in other new faces, with talks underway to sign Brighton and Hove Albion centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke and Manchester City winger Savinho.
Spurs are also in negotiations with Bayern Munich over a permanent move for midfielder Joao Palhinha, following a successful season-long loan spell, with the player giving his priority to linking up with Roberto De Zerbi on a full-time basis despite reports that he wanted to return to his home country, Portugal.
Even if Tottenham do sign Palhinha, Jacobs has refused to rule out the possibility of another midfielder arriving, with Romano revealing that club chiefs want to do 'something important' in the position.
Tottenham Make Mateus Fernandes Transfer Enquiry
FootMercato reported on Sunday that Tottenham are showing interest in signing World Cup sensation Ayyoub Bouaddi of Morocco and Lille, but he isn't the only other midfielder on top of Palhinha they are targeting.
According to Jacobs, speaking on the Last Word on Spurs podcast on Sunday night, Spurs have also made an enquiry to sign West Ham star Mateus Fernandes.
Any Tottenham move for the Portuguese star would have to be considered as a hijack right now, with United in official talks with West Ham and super-agent Jorge Mendes over a switch for the Portugal international.
The Hammers are in no mood to lose the 'elite' 21-year-old on the cheap though, as they demand a fee of between £80-85m for his services.
Jacobs said: "They're looking at the market with various names. They made an enquiry for Matheus Fernandes, even though the direction of travel there is Manchester United or PSG.
"Real Madrid could even enter that race, but he was another player that they looked at. Funny, because Tottenham and West Ham just don't do that much business ever, and yet we might get a flurry now, because the reports, of which I also was one of them, around Crysencio Summerville and Tottenham were legitimate, even though West Ham tried to deny it at the time."
Which Other Midfielders Could Tottenham Target?
Tottenham have also been linked with a move for £80m-rated Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott.
The England international was one of the Cherries' most impressive performers as they finished sixth in the league and secured Europa League football for next season.
Scott is a boyhood Spurs fan and while Tottenham would want to bring him in for a lower fee, it could be a deal to watch out for in the next weeks of the window.
