Cristian Romero’s future at Tottenham Hotspur looks set to come under the microscope once again this summer.

The centre-back was constantly linked with a move to Atletico Madrid last summer, but ended up staying at Hotspur Way.

The Argentina star featured 23 times in the Premier League this season, with four goals and two red cards.

Romero is a polarising figure in North London with some loving his no-nonsense approach, but others have deemed him reckless and lacking leadership.

Tottenham may have to prepare for Romero’s exit after a new transfer claim was made.

Could Romero actually leave Tottenham?

John Wenham believes Romero may be on the way out at Tottenham, with a low fee of around £30-35million potentially being enough to seal an exit for the man who played a key part in the Europa League final win just last season.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, he said: “Romero, people are still saying that regardless of what happens this season, there’s an understanding that it would be best for all parties if he moves on this summer.

“The obvious one is Atletico Madrid, who he was close to joining last year, they’ve got that huge amount of Argentinian players already there, as well as the manager being Argentinian.

“I just see that being a move that works for all parties. I think the fee might be a little lower than what people would expect, primarily because I think Tottenham are relatively happy with him moving on.

“It might be around the £30-£35m mark, which some people will say he is worth more than and is going to start for Argentina in the World Cup, but when a club is happy for a player to move on, sometimes the fee is that bit less.

“He’ll be thanked for his time and he’ll be thanked massively for his performance in the Europa League final, where he was a real captain, from minute one when he led us into Man United’s half to do the team talk, from his performance in the game and at full-time when he walked right over to the United players and gave it the big one, he lifted Tottenham that night.”

What has changed about Romero’s situation?

It may seem strange that Spurs would be willing to get rid of the man that they made captain in August, and fought hard to keep amid previous interest from the Spanish side.

However, that decision was made by Thomas Frank, and he may not have impressed Roberto De Zerbi in that time that they worked together, before he was ruled out for the rest of the season.

That could explain the apparent change of heart on the Argentine’s future in N17.
