The Tottenham Hotspur captain prompted fears back home in Argentina when he was substituted during the dramatic World Cup win against Egypt

Scans on Cristian Romero's left calf after his withdrawal during Argentina's last-gasp victory against Egypt at the World Cup have allayed fears of any injury.

The 28-year-old Tottenham captain played a huge part for his country as he started the comeback after Egypt led 2-0 thanks to goals from Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Ziko. Romero headed home in the 79th minute with Lionel Messi firing in the leveller four minutes later.

Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez then capped a remarkable comeback victory in the 93rd minute in Atlanta with a pinpoint header to break Egyptian hearts.

Romero was taken off shortly after in a double change by Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni, with 38-year-old former Manchester City defender Nicolas Otamendi replacing him.

That sparked some concerns among the Argentinean media and supporters, with Romero having coming into the World Cup off the back of a knee ligament injury that ended his Spurs season prematurely and then he suffered another small knee issue early on in the tournament which he played down.

However Argentinean media outlet El Dia have now reported, picked up by Sport Witness, that despite speculation of another injury for Romero which prompted his substitution, tests instead showed only cramp in his left calf.

That means Romero will be fit to take on Switzerland in their quarter-final clash this weekend as Argentina look to continue to progress and hold on to their World Cup crown.

Romero, who has been linked with a transfer out of Tottenham this summer, sparked some outrage among Egyptian fans after Fernandez's last-gasp goal when, rather than rushing over to the Chelsea man, the defender instead celebrated wildly by punching the air repeatedly in the path of Mohamed Salah, who had to step around him.

Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez grabbed Romero to ensure he did not spark a reaction from the Egyptian players. Romero had done similar in the face of Kylian Mbappe after Messi's extra-time goal in the World Cup final in Qatar in 2022, with the Frenchman not flinching.

It's a reaction Spurs fans have also seen over the years in club matches, including celebrating in Harry Maguire's face after the Manchester United defender scored an own goal against the north London outfit.
