Cristian Romero could be weeks away from leaving Tottenham this summer.
The defender has been linked with a move away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the summer transfer window, and Atletico Madrid have been credited with interest.
What the future holds is uncertain, not helped by the questions surrounding Ange Postecoglou’s position at the helm.
Romero keen on La Liga move
It has not been the best season for Romero at Tottenham, with a campaign that has been hit by injuries.
The 27-year-old has made just 18 Premier League appearances this season, while his side struggled in the league.
MORE SPURS STORIES
Nevertheless, when he has played, Romero has been hailed for his performances after helping to guide Spurs to the Europa League trophy.
After ending their 17-year wait for silverware by beating Manchester United 1-0, Romero was named UEFA Europa League Player of the Season.
However, Atletico Madrid remain keen on the defender, and given how poorly the Lilywhites performed domestically, it seems a move could be on the cards.
Speaking to Gaston Edul (29 May), Romero shared an update, saying: “I would love to play in La Liga, it’s the one I’m missing.”
When asked specifically about his future, he added: “I’m going to give my best until the last day I’m here.
“I’m happy. They make me feel like an important player. Whatever the future holds for me, I’m welcome.”
Tottenham to cash in on Romero
With Champions League football having been secured for next season, the thought of letting some of the best players go in north London seems like a mad one.
However, it could be the right time to part ways with Romero, after he mentioned his last day.
His comments about wanting to play in La Liga suggest that he will be highly interested in an offer from Atletico Madrid this summer, despite being happy at Spurs, and there is no use in keeping someone whose heart is not in it.
Given how much of the season the defender had to miss through injury, too, this sale could allow for the recruitment of a new face that is younger and able to stay fitter.
