Cristian Romero’s controversial decision to skip Everton game is for ‘this’ reason, according to his agent

Cristian Romero’s agent speaks about the Argentinian’s recent controversy.

Cristian Romero’s agent has moved to clarify the circumstances surrounding the Tottenham captain’s presence in Argentina ahead of Sunday’s final-day Premier League fixture against Everton, insisting that the trip was arranged weeks in advance as part of a structured rehabilitation programme and had nothing to do with attending football matches.

Reports emerged suggesting Romero had travelled to Argentina to watch his childhood club Belgrano play in a cup final against River Plate, with some questioning the optics of the Tottenham captain being absent from the country on the most important day of his club’s season.

Romero’s agent was unequivocal in his response. He said (h/t The Touchline on X):

“Any suggestion that the trip was made for the purpose of attending football matches is entirely inaccurate.”

The timeline is important here. Just weeks ago, a separate report from Alasdair Gold revealed that Romero had chosen to remain in England with his Tottenham teammates during the most critical phase of the relegation battle, with the Argentine Football Association sending kinesiologist Luis Garcia to London to continue his recovery rather than have him return home. That decision was widely praised as a demonstration of remarkable commitment from a player unable to contribute on the pitch but determined to remain present and invested in the fight.

The current trip to Argentina therefore, represents a later stage of his rehabilitation, pre-planned well before Tottenham’s final day fixture was confirmed and arranged in coordination with medical staff on both sides. The context of the earlier decision to stay in England makes the agent’s clarification entirely credible. This is not a captain who has shown any inclination to prioritise personal interests over his club’s needs during the survival battle.

Romero sidelined since Sunderland game

Romero has been sidelined since suffering a season-ending knee injury at Sunderland in April, the direct consequence of the Brian Brobbey push that the Premier League’s Key Match Incidents panel later ruled should have resulted in a red card. His recovery ahead of this summer’s World Cup with Argentina remains the primary focus, and a structured rehabilitation programme in his home country is a perfectly logical step at this stage of the process.

The timing of the trip may have generated uncomfortable headlines, given what Sunday represents for Tottenham. The facts, however, tell a different and considerably more straightforward story.
