Tottenham fans have long-since found issue with the ownership of their club.

Chairman Daniel Levy and the ENIC Group have faced several protests in recent years, with fans questioning the owners’ decisions for matters on and off the pitch.

Calls for the club have, so far, received no response from decision-makers at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but recent years have rumoured of a potential change in stance.

Tottenham loans ‘biggest inhibitor’ of sale

In 2023, reports emerged that Qatari government-backed Qatar Sports Investment were in talks to purchase a 15 per cent stake in Tottenham.

Talks later fell through, however, with ENIC’s asking price reportedly too high.

But earlier this year, rumours of a separate group of Qatari investors being interested in purchasing the club once again emerged.

The progress of any talks remains unclear, but Levy has previously expressed his desire for external investment in the club.

However, any party interested in purchasing the club may run into some difficulties, according to football finance expert, Kieran Maguire.

Speaking about Spurs on his podcast, The Price of Football (July 8), Maguire suggested the loans carried by the club may prevent any future sale.

“Spurs’ loans are actually probably the biggest inhibitor of a sale, and we can discuss that at another time,” Maguire explained.

According to The Telegraph (June 17), the North London club currently have around £900million worth of debt.

And around 90 per cent of this debt is paid at a fixed interest rate of three per cent per year, according to Oakwell Sports Advisory.

The majority of the club’s debt is still existing from the move that saw them switch White Hart Lane for The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, which the Covid-19 pandemic only saw to worsen.

This debt could be a sticking point for any potential buyer of the club.

Tottenham fans must continue to voice their displeasure

Tottenham fans have been resolute in their distaste for the ownership, and the decision to sack Ange Postecoglou following the club’s Europa League victory has only intensified the fury for some.
