Daniel Levy is pulling out all the stops to support Thomas Frank in the transfer window.
Levy has delighted Tottenham fans after a whirlwind 24 hours in which Spurs signed Mohammed Kudus and triggered Morgan Gibbs-White’s release clause, although that deal could now be delayed as Nottingham Forest consult their lawyers over what they believe to be an illegal approach [Rob Dorsett].
These deals present a substantial financial outlay, which has raised questions about whether Levy may have secured investment before making these moves.
Nevertheless, the 63-year-old has proven that he is invested in supporting Frank and could yet take things a step further following the latest update on Yoane Wissa.
Brentford reject Nottingham Forest’s £20million bid for Wissa
Tottenham have entered talks to sign Wissa from Brentford as Frank looks to reunite with his former striker in North London.
MORE SPURS STORIES
The Democratic Republic of Congo international recorded his best goal return for the Bees last season and is in the final year of his contract.
Spurs have been urged to accelerate their approach as Brentford are unwilling to let both Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo leave this summer [Sky Sports], with the latter a key target for Manchester United.
They received another warning sign that a deal needs to be concluded quickly, as the Evening Standard reported (11 July) that the Bees have rejected a £20million bid from Nottingham Forest for Wissa.
Tottenham have yet to contact the West London club, but are still interested in the striker and have previously been informed that it would cost around £50m to prise him away from the Bees.
A move for the 28-year-old makes perfect sense for the Lilywhites, as he is in his prime, knows Frank well, has Premier League experience, and would offer a different option to Dominic Solanke.
Given Wissa’s excellent fit for Spurs, Levy may pull the trigger on the former Lorient striker, which would take the chairman’s spending to over £221m this summer, after deals for Mathys Tel, Kevin Danso, Kota Takai, Kudus and Gibbs-White, should that go through, which total £171m.
Spurs using UEFA Champions League pull while they can
For all the positivity and ambition that Spurs are showing in the transfer window, it is unclear where they will finish as Frank gets to grips with his new squad.
The Dane will be hoping to significantly improve on last year’s league position and at least challenge for the UEFA Champions League spots.
However, it is far from a guarantee. Therefore, Tottenham are capitalising on their current offering of elite European football to attract ambitious players like Kudus.
