De Zerbi Loves Him: Nobody is Talking About Tottenham Star in Williams-Barnett’s Way

Tottenham Hotspur are flying high currently in the Premier League after finding their feet with three consecutive victories, and Roberto De Zerbi can do no wrong.

Spurs claimed a dominant 2-0 win over ten-man Crystal Palace this past weekend thanks to goals from Archie Gray and Jan Paul van Hecke in either half, moving them up to eighth in the table, and a win in the next game against Leeds could see them move up to fifth ahead of other games taking place over the weekend.

The north London club are even finding themselves in a position to hand young talents some minutes, with the Italian boss able to hand 18-year-old winger Luca Williams-Barnett an opportunity in the win over Palace.

The talented forward made an immediate impression too, beating his opposition full-back with ease on a number of occasions, and his dribbling leading to a huge opportunity for Mohammed Kudus to add a third goal, only for the Ghana international to miss the target from two yards out.

Savio has been dealing with injury issues so far during his time at the club, while Omar Marmoush has struggled massively with his form playing across the forward line, and Dominic Solanke seemingly doesn't fit the way the manager wants to play too well.

That has seen many people clamour for the teenage sensation to be handed a rare start against Leeds, with the short cameo he had in the most recent game enough to ignite the excitement among the fan base.

It would be a huge opportunity for the youngster, but it's also worth noting that he is getting these opportunities because of injury issues within the squad currently.

Savio remains sidelined until after the international break, while James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski continue to deal with their own fitness issues following long-term injury problems. But another forgotten member of the squad is Chelsea loanee Mykhailo Mudryk, who is yet to feature after suffering a muscle problem back in September, and played for just 16 minutes prior to that issue.

De Zerbi has recently confirmed that he expects the Ukraine international to return to contention after the international break, and that could be a major issue for Williams-Barnett's chances of becoming a regular in the team.

Mudryk Return Is Bad News for Williams-Barnett

While injuries mean that Williams-Barnett is getting a chance, good performances should see him keep his place in and around the team. But with the way De Zerbi has managed things so far, that seems unlikely.

Mudryk is someone that De Zerbi has been a huge fan of for a long time, having worked with him previously at Shakhtar, and even declaring that he could one day win the Ballon d'Or.

"We spent a very particular season together in Shakhtar," De Zerbi told a news conference in September.

"When the war started, we were together. And when I spoke about the Ballon d'Or, I was very clear. Maybe my English is not so good, but I was very clear because I was speaking about the potential of the player. The potential of the player can be the same and can respect the prediction or not.

"Until now, he has had many problems. The last problem, the suspension for whatever was the problem, but the [outcome] is clear. And now his challenge is to respect all his qualities because he's a great player. He has to leave this season in a right way, not too [much] pressure, but it is the right moment for him to show [his ability] because if Chelsea paid €100m four years ago ... I think they brought a lot of big, big players and to spend €100m, I think they thought very well about the qualities of Mudryk."

Having brought him into the club to strengthen the attack, it seems highly unlikely that when he's fit he won't be involved in the first-team picture more often than the teenager.

That may halt his development and also anger fans who want to see one of their own come through, especially ahead of a Chelsea player who didn't cut it at Stamford Bridge. It's something that De Zerbi will have to juggle with once the decision needs to be made, and the youngster may have the chance to ensure the decision is a difficult one against Leeds.
