Tottenham supporters have labelled Cristian Romero as an embarrassment after reports emerged that he has travelled back to Argentina ahead of the club’s relegation showdown with Everton this weekend.

Romero, who is currently sidelined with a knee injury, is said to have made the trip back to his native country to watch the Argentine Primera Division final between River Plate and Belgrano.

The Spurs captain, who is a boyhood fan of Belgrano, was then pictured at the club’s training ground in a video posted on their official Instagram page.

Romero has missed Spurs’ last five games through injury, but has been in attendance at the club’s last two home games.

He was in the stands as Roberto De Zerbi’s side were held to a 2-2 draw against Brighton, but was then seen passionately celebrating by the touchline as Mathys Tel scored the opening goal against Leeds last Monday.

It was expected that Romero would be in attendance for this weekend’s game against Everton, with Spurs knowing that a win would mathematically keep them in the Premier League.

However, Romero’s decision to fly to Argentina has not gone down well with supporters, who have taken to social media to voice their frustration.

The Spurs Express, a Tottenham news and updates account with over 239,000 followers, described the situation as “inexplicable and frankly extraordinary” in a post on the social media platform X.

“Inexplicable and frankly extraordinary that the club Captain of Tottenham Hotspur won’t be in attendance for one of the biggest games in the history of the Football Club,” read the post.

“Dereliction of duty is an understatement.”

Spurs Army, which has over 31,000 followers on X, added that it was an “embarrassment” to say that Romero had ever played for Spurs.

“It just gets worse and worse…

“Cristian Romero, it is an embarrassment to say that you wore the famous badge of #thfc.”

Tottenham content creator Ben Bowman also criticised the decision, questioning the message Romero was sending by not being in attendance for arguably the biggest game in Spurs’ recent history.

“I’ve stuck up for Romero a lot at times and it’s great how he’s called out the club and been a voice for us, but what kind of message does this send to your teammates and fans (that have backed you) before the one of the biggest games in our history? All together always my arse,” He said in reply to a post on X.
