The summer transfer window is finally shut for business, but Everton’s recruitment team will already be eyeing what is next.

Everton enjoyed a seriously encouraging summer transfer window, which saw some big-name additions land on Merseyside.

However, the nature of Everton’s summer meant that not every position could be addressed in such a short space of time.

Moyes admitted Everton needed more signings, but there was too much work to be done in just one window.

On deadline day, Everton signed Merlin Rohl, but he was not their only target for the final hours of the window.

Everton wanted to add defenders on deadline day. Having not sealed any defensive additions, focus is already shifting to the January market.

Everton targeting Manchester City’s Nathan Ake for January

Over the summer, Everton showed an interest in Nathan Ake, with his own future at Manchester City up in the air.

Nothing developed from the interest, after Pep Guardiola retained the Dutch defender following the deadline on Monday.

However, according to Caught Offside, Everton remain interested in Ake ahead of the January transfer window.

They are not alone in their interest, though, with the following clubs also credited in the report:

It is now claimed that Ake could be available for as little as just £15m as City look to trim back their squad.

A deadline day for Ake was played down at Everton, with focus on bringing Rohl through the doors at Finch Farm.

However, Moyes has ended the summer admitting that he needed more defensive additions.

David Moyes wanted more defensive signings

It has to be highlighted that the work done this summer was extremely positive by Everton, with a lot of quality added to the attacking areas.

The only concern may come amid Jarrad Branthwaite’s current injury absence, which is already stretching the defensive options.

Nathan Patterson did not leave Everton for Sevilla, with his potential loan deal being scrapped in the final hours.

But Moyes has already admitted that Everton could have done with some further defensive additions in the market.

“We wanted to try and give as many players (as possible) a game. I’ve not got any defenders. I’m very limited to what I can choose defensive-wise,” Moyes told the media last month.

“It already has changed a lot of my plans because, obviously, we’re without Jarrad and we have been without Myko for, certainly, the first couple of games.”
