With the climax of the World Cup knockout stages prompting some resignations, Ange Postecoglou has been linked with a new post

Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou is the third favourite to takeover as manager of Scotland. At the time of writing, the Australian is 6/1 to takeover from Steve Clarke.

Clarke resigned from his post after failing to get the Scots out of the group stages. He leaves having beaten Haiti 1-0 but losing 1-0 to Morocco and 3-0 to Brazil.

The ex-Chelsea assistant manager lost a lot of confidence within his country's fan-base, with many feeling his style of play was too defensive and negative. If Postecoglou was handed the reins, their football would swing dramatically from one style to another.

At 6/1, according to Bet365, Postecoglou is firmly in the mix to become the leader of the Tartan Army. Only ex-Scotland forward Steven Naismith (7/2) and Kilmarnock boss Neil McCann (5-1) are ahead of the ex-Spurs chief.

As well as being a free agent after his sacking by Nottingham Forest last season, Postecoglou also has pedigree in Scottish and international football. Before he joined Spurs, the 60-year-old won two Scottish Premiership titles, two Scottish League Cups and one Scottish Cup.

He has also managed the Australian national team at multiple levels and was in charge in the 2014 World Cup.

As well as the aforementioned managerial trio, John McGlynn (6/1), Millwall manager Alex Neil (7/1), former West Ham boss and current Everton manager David Moyes (8/1) and many more are also listed as potential candidates.

When Clarke resigned from his post shortly after Scotland's World Cup elimination was confirmed, he said in a statement: "The most emotional part of this goodbye is for my players, without whom we wouldn’t have had any of the memories that we’ve accumulated from 2019 until now.

"They deserve all the praise and adulation that they receive and it was truly an honour to be called their Gaffer. Thanks for having me and good luck to my successor.”

Postecoglou has spoken out about how much he enjoyed Celtic, but ruled out a return to Parkhead. While he did not mention anything about the Scotland job, his love for Scottish football was evident.

In a previous interview, he said: "For two years, to be within a community that is so passionate, and it's crazy how passionate they are, obviously I was fortunate enough to have success.

"It's a positive experience and I loved every minute of it. I look back on it fondly but... I won't go back. It's not how my career plays out."
