Fabrizio Romano has played down the chances of one of Tottenham’s top midfield targets leaving his club during the January transfer window.
Tottenham are thought to be eyeing reinforcements to their midfield in January, which does not come as a surprise, given the creative issues the Lilywhites have had in the middle of the park.
Xavi Simons has not hit the ground running at N17, while there are question marks about whether Bentancur and Palhinha offer enough in possession.
It has thus been suggested over recent weeks that Spurs could make a move for Napoli star Scott McTominay, who has taken his game to a new level since swapping Man United for Naples last year.
It was even suggested by journalist Pete O’Rourke a few days ago that McTominay ticks a lot of boxes for Thomas Frank’s side.
However, Fabrizio Romano has now said on his Italian YouTube channel (as translated by BBC Sport) that the 28-year-old is not expected to return to the Premier League in January.
In fact, the journalist labels that the rumours linking him with a January transfer as ‘fantasy’, revealing the Scotland international is happy at the Serie A club.

Interestingly, Romano adds that the clubs showing the most interest in McTominay are the likes of Everton, who also cannot offer him Champions League football.
Spurs eyeing two other former Premier League midfielders
It appears, based on the transfer rumours, that Thomas Frank’s men are looking to sign a midfielder with Premier League experience so that he can have an immediate impact at N17 like Joao Palhinha has.
Apart from McTominay, it has been suggested that former Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher is also on Tottenham’s wishlist.
