Fabrizio Romano provided an update on Morgan Gibbs-White and Tottenham Hotspur just before it was announced that Nottingham Forest have now officially taken legal action.

Unless you have been living under a rock over the last few days, you would be aware that Nottingham Forest have threatened legal action against Tottenham after the Lilywhites activated Morgan Gibbs-White’s release clause.

Forest are not happy that Gibbs-White’s £60m release clause was made public and believe that confidentiality was broken, leading to Tottenham submitting the perfect bid to trigger it.

On Monday morning, it was confirmed by Tom Barclay that Forest had indeed launched a legal complaint against Spurs, presumably for contacting the midfielder and his entourage without their permission.

Spurs Web has relayed various sources over the last few days that have claimed that Morgan Gibbs-White is expected to become a Tottenham player despite the legal mess this deal appears to be mired in.

In fact, The Athletic even suggested over the weekend that Nottingham Forest themselves do not expect to stop Gibbs-White’s move to Spurs and know that they might only be able to hold up the deal temporarily.

Fabrizio Romano has now provided an update on proceedings, claiming that the feeling at N17 is that Gibbs-White will become a Tottenham Hotspur player ‘soon’.

When asked if Spurs are still confident about completing a deal for the Forest midfielder, Romano told GiveMeSport newsletter (14/07/25): “Yes, they are. It’s a tense situation, but Spurs hope to be able to proceed soon.”

Why Spurs fans should not be worried about Gibbs-White deal being hijacked

While Tottenham appear confident that they are not in the wrong in this situation, the worry for Spurs fans would be that this delay could allow another club to swoop in and hijack the deal.

However, Alasdair Gold has pointed out that there could be further legal complications if the Morgan Gibbs-White deal is hijacked as Tottenham essentially had the deal wrapped up.

The midfielder’s release clause had been met and he was set to have a medical with the Lilywhites before Forest stopped communication with them and decided to take legal action.
