Newcastle United are in talks to sign midfielder Lucas Bergvall from Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
The Magpies and Spurs have already done major business with each other this summer following Sandro Tonali’s £100milllion move to North London earlier this month.
With Tonali gone, United are looking to bolster their midfield but their search took a hit this week after Switzerland international Johan Manzambi turned down a £49million move in favour of joining Aston Villa.
As Newcastle explore other targets, Bergvall is among those under serious consideration, having entered discussions with Spurs over a potential deal.
The Sweden international, who wants a fresh challenge, will be allowed to leave Tottenham following the £185million double arrival of Tonali and Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United.
Newcastle were interested in Bergvall before he joined Spurs from Djurgardens in 2024. The midfielder has gone to make 78 appearances, scoring twice and registering nine assists.
Fabrizio Romano issues Lucas Bergvall update
Eddie Howe’s side aren’t the only one pursuing a move for Bergvall, with Nottingham Forest understood to have had a £38million bid rejected.
Transfer influencer Fabrizio Romano said on YouTube: “Bergvall told Tottenham that he wants to play on a regular basis. He's ready to take a different step, and leaving Tottenham this summer is something that he has to do, according to the player, because he wants to play.
“At Tottenham, the feeling of the boy is that after signing Mateus Fernandes, Sandro Tonali, and they're not going to play European football, he doesn't want to spend a season on the bench or playing 10 minutes every two weeks.
“And so, for Bergvall, bid from Nottingham Forest, talks with Newcastle. Both clubs are working for Lucas Bergvall. Both clubs are in contact.
“The highest proposal financially is from Nottingham Forest, but Newcastle can offer a very competitive project and also ambitions. So, there is a conversation ongoing with both clubs. Let's see what Bergvall decides to do.
“But for sure, the situation of Lukas Bergvall is one to watch in the next days, because he's expected to leave Tottenham Hotspur.”
