Tottenham Hotspur's qualification for the Champions League after their Europa League win last month has given them a last-chance saloon in terms of being able to keep hold of their best players - and that could see centre-back star Cristian Romero stay at the club for 'at least' one more year, esteemed journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed on his GIVEMESPORT transfer newsletter.

Tottenham finished in a lowly 17th-place this season, their worst-ever in the Premier League - and only a shock relegation to the Championship will ever mean that they'll break that unwanted record that they mustered under sacked boss Ange Postecoglou last season. But a win in the Europa League final ended their 17-year wait for a trophy, and crucially gave them a backdoor route to the Champions League for next season - which could see them keep their best players.

Romano: Tottenham Aim to Keep Romero 'For One More Season'

The Lilywhites' qualification for Europe could play a big part

Romero is one of the names who has long been linked with a move away from north London, with GMS sources stating earlier in the season that the club could have been tempted to sell him this summer. Atletico Madrid have been named as an interested party.

But new boss Thomas Frank may be able to get one season out of the World Cup winner if he can keep hold of him this window - with Romano stating that Daniel Levy and Tottenham's recruitment team will 'really try their best' to keep him in the squad for another season and a potential Champions League run. Romano wrote in his GIVEMESPORT transfer newsletter:

"Quiet situation now, I think Spurs will really try their best to keep him at least for this season."

Romero has made 100 Premier League appearances for Tottenham, scoring seven goals and registering two assists in that time, helping them to one Champions League finish and, of course, the Europa League trophy.

The Argentine tends to captain the club when he plays, and would be a huge loss if he was to depart in the summer months having forged a strong relationship with Micky van de Ven, though an injury crisis massively derailed his form throughout the campaign.

GIVEMESPORT Key Statistic: Cristian Romero has three goals in 44 caps for Argentina.

Frank is set to bring in a number of names to help with Tottenham's European endeavours, but keeping Romero may be the ticket to success.
