Morgan Rogers is once again the subject of transfer interest from one of the Premier League’s so-called ‘big six’ clubs.
The popular England international, the scorer of Aston Villa’s opening goal in the recent 1-1 draw with AFC Bournemouth, is flourishing and building form ahead of this summer’s World Cup. England boss Thomas Tuchel is reportedly weighing up whether to start Rogers over Real Madrid superstar Jude Bellingham – a credit to just how well Villa’s number 27 is performing.
It’s no wonder Rogers is gaining such attention, as he has scored 10 goals and contributed seven assists in 35 games across all competitions for Villa this season. Rogers, despite having a slow start along with many of his Villa teammates, has already levelled last campaign’s tally of eight Premier League goals – and he’s showing no sign of slowing down any time soon.
Fabrizio Romano shares Morgan Rogers transfer update
But could Rogers move clubs after the World Cup? Could the rest of this season be his last dance as a Villa player? Well, according to transfer news journalist Fabrizio Romano, there ‘will be movement’ in the summer and talks are expected to ramp up behind the scenes with interested clubs.
During a recent YouTube video, Romano said: “Yes, Morgan Rogers extended his contract at Aston Villa a few months ago, but there will be movement again. His situation will be one to watch in the summer.”
Romano even named several Premier League clubs likely to be in the market for Rogers, as he added: “I’m sure Chelsea are still tracking Rogers. He’s a dream target for Tottenham. Let’s see if other clubs join the race, like Arsenal and others who can be involved in this possibility.”
Do Villa need to sell Rogers?
Despite dealing with the intense pressures of trying to adhere to the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR), as well as UEFA’s squad cost rules (SCR), Villa have maintained for several successive transfer windows that Rogers is not for sale.
Profit on players is so important and can make a huge difference to flexibility in the market. Rogers, signed from Middlesbrough for merely £15 million including add-ons, could generate a huge margin. However, Villa have not been willing to sell Rogers and that stance is expected to remain in the summer.
If Villa qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League, then there will be a significant increase in income – tens of millions extra compared to this campaign in the Europa League. That could be the difference, perhaps, between keeping Rogers or not. But, as Birmingham World understands it, Villa are eager to keep hold of Rogers regardless.
Now, Romano’s words do often carry a lot of weight, but on this occasion, it may be worth taking them with a pinch of salt. Of course Rogers is a ‘dream signing’ for the likes of Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea, but that doesn’t mean Villa will give in and let him leave. After all, Rogers still has five years left on his long-term contract. Villa are under no real pressure in that sense.
