Tottenham Hotspur are already planning for big changes at the club next season, as they look to get back to where they feel they belong after a disastrous year.
Spurs finished 17th in the Premier League last season but ultimately made up for it by winning the Europa League, ending a 17-year trophy drought to earn Champions League football in the process. Despite that, Ange Postecoglou was sacked and replaced by Thomas Frank, with the hope of a new era being ushered in.
That decision backfired though, and Frank was sacked in February with the team having won just two of their last 17 Premier League games. Then Igor Tudor was brought in to steady the ship and arguably made things worse, being sacked after just seven games, with the team sitting just one point above the relegation zone with seven games to go.
De Zerbi Needs Reliable Players
Part of the issue at Spurs has been the lack of discipline within the squad, and especially from captain Cristian Romero.
The Argentine has been suspended several times this season, and has even spoken out against the board publicly on a number of occasions, leading to heavy speculation that he will leave the club in the summer, despite having signed a new long-term contract last year.
While that may seem like a disaster on paper, it may actually turn out to be exactly what Spurs need to regenerate their squad and get back to where they feel they belong - in the Champions League and competing at the top end of the Premier League.
But for as much hassle as Romero can cause, he will be difficult to replace. He's a World Cup winner with great defensive attributes, and is clearly someone who is highly respected within the dressing room in north London.
That has seen Tottenham begin their search for someone to come in and take his place, and it has led them down the path of a potential deal for Marcos Senesi.
Tottenham In Talks for Marcos Senesi Deal
According to reports, Tottenham have opened talks with Bournemouth star Senesi about a move to north London this summer when his contract with the Cherries expires.
Described as a 'gladiator', Senesi has grown into his role of senior defender for Bournemouth this season, and is now attracting the interest of some of Europe's top sides, including Barcelona and Liverpool too.
But those clubs already have established first-choice defenders in their squad, and it's understood that Senesi wants to play regularly. Spurs can offer that, and they can immediately make him one of the most important players in their squad.
De Zerbi needs players he can rely on, and Senesi would be just that. On the pitch he may not be at Romero's level right now. But he offers great quality and experience, he knows the Premier League, he's cheap, and he's hungry to come in and make an impression. It's a no-brainer for Spurs to get it done, by any means necessary.
