Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Ramon Vega has reacted to the ongoing crisis at the club and has given his take on the fans booing Guglielmo Vicario.

There were some astonishing scenes at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday as a section of Spurs fans targeted their own player.

After Guglielmo Vicario’s mistake for Fulham’s second goal, the goalkeeper was booed several times when he touched the ball, and he even attracted ironic cheers from the crowd when he made a save.

Thomas Frank insisted that it was unacceptable for fans to boo their own players in the middle of a game, and the Tottenham boss was backed up by Pedro Porro, who hinted that the supporters had disrespected the players.

Ramon Vega tells Tottenham fans to boo the board instead of the players

Some Spurs fans have blasted Frank for his comments and have asserted that they have a right to jeer the players.

Vega has now taken the side of the fans, admitting that he understands their frustration, but he called on them to direct their ire towards the board rather than the players.

The former Tottenham man wrote on X: “I don’t even know if the club has an identity anymore; it’s nonexistent, and there’s nothing for the fans to connect with except for consistently moaning and booing the players I disagree with.

“However, I totally understand the fans, as I was on the receiving end once. There was no social media back then, so we just stuck in and went on to win a trophy! 99.

“The main boos and complaints should mainly be directed at the board, which has massively let down the fans for years and still expects loyalty from them by charging them the most expensive tickets in the Premier League, yet offers no real connection at all.

“They have neglected the football side and fans for years by prioritising infrastructure and real estate. We never replaced Kane or Son or… and the list goes on.”

Spurs fans need to reflect on their treatment of Guglielmo Vicario

According to reports, the Tottenham players have held a lengthy discussion about their worsening relationship with the fans, as it is a topic that they want to address head-on.

One would hope that the fans also have a similar moment of introspection and ask themselves if what went on was correct.

Booing after the game and even at half-time is understandable, but when the supporters start targeting their own players, they are actively making it difficult for their own side.

No matter the price of the ticket one pays or how bad the performance, the reality is that mocking and jeering one’s own players is counter-productive and a gift to the opposition.
