A documentary about Gorillaz’ landmark show at London's Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is seemingly in the works.
The event took place on Saturday 20th June, with a 70,000-strong audience and star-studded cast of on-stage guests. Fans reported seeing camera crews throughout the venue on the night, and a BBC News article, published yesterday (21st June), confirmed that a documentary about the evening will soon follow.
Extensive filming took place in all areas of the venue, with the group’s founding member and visual artist Jamie Hewlett leading a camera crew to capture on-stage, crowd and backstage moments. The film is expected to blend footage of the live show – a full band set headed up by frontman Damon Albarn – with appearances from the band's cartoon performers, 2-D, Murdoc, Noodle and Russel.
“The aim is to reveal what it takes to put on a show like this,” Hewlett told BBC News. “We have artists filming themselves getting on planes from different parts of the world, then everybody coming together here in Tottenham, the arrival of the fans, the Gorillaz show, and the aftermath, when there's only empty beer cups left.”
On the night, the guest line-up featured the likes of Johnny Marr, Shaun Ryder, Little Simz, Yasiin Bey (fka Mos Def), Kano, Bashy, Omar Souleyman, and Lao, with Trueno and Sparks playing support slots prior to the headliners. It marked Gorillaz' first-ever stadium show, and follows the release of their ninth studio album, 'The Mountain', in February.
The 31-track setlist featured material from the band's latest album, alongside some of their biggest hits, including 'Tomorrow Comes Today', 'Dirty Harry', 'Rhinestone Eyes' and 'Clint Eastwood’.
