Tottenham Hotspur legend Graham Roberts has heaped praise on one current Spurs star as a ‘difference maker’ in the big moments.
Tottenham Hotspur are 11th in the Premier League table, but they would be 14th without the contributions of Cristian Romero on Tuesday night.
The defender found himself in the attacking third against Newcastle and headed home to make the scoreline level, only for the Magpies to retake the lead through a controversial penalty.
However, Romero had the final say with an overhead kick, which gave Spurs a draw at St James’ Park for the first time since 2021.
Graham Roberts sends strong message to Cristian Romero after Tottenham draw
Ex-Tottenham defender Graham Roberts has piled praise on Romero for his brilliance on Tuesday night. According to Roberts, it is thanks to star players like the Argentine that Spurs lifted the Europa League trophy last season.
He posted on his X account: “The Reason we won that cup was because of big characters like Cristian Romero. Yes, he has made some mistakes over the last couple of years, but for me, when it matters in big moments, he will be the difference. He has won the biggest of it all!”

This came after a post 11 minutes earlier when Roberts slammed the decision to give Newcastle a penalty. However, he again praised Romero for his display.
“Absolute joke, the ref and VAR are disgraceful,” he posted. “Proper captain’s performance that from Cristian Romero. We need to build on that good point now. Could hear the fans all night, well done boys and now we need 3 points [at the] weekend.”
Romero is not under threat at Spurs
As Roberts has said, Romero has not always reached the level required of him at Tottenham. Sometimes the club’s supporters expect more from a player who has won the World Cup and Copa America.
However, the 27-year-old has shown resilience in the face of doubt time and time again, and he remains one of the best defenders in the country. There is certainly no player who has come close to knocking Romero out of his position in the first team.
