Heung-min Son is reportedly the subject of heavy transfer interest from Saudi Arabia, but a new report has shed light on the possibility of the Tottenham Hotspur captain heading out of the exit door on the back of the club’s historic Europa League success.
Despite the fact the Lilywhites have just broken their 17-year-old trophy drought, some reports indicate that Tottenham have decided to replace Ange Postecoglou.
It turns out that the North Londoners may not just lose their silverware-winning head coach, but also potentially the captain who lifted the trophy in Bilbao.
The Sun reported a little over a week ago that Tottenham may consider selling Son if they receive a big enough offer.
The publication claimed that Daniel Levy will give the green light for a major shake-up of the Spurs first-team squad this summer, and the mega-money sale of the forward could bankroll major investment into the squad.
This was backed up on Tuesday by The Telegraph, who said that Heung-min Son could leave Tottenham this summer in order to fund a summer spending spree.
Heung-min Son’s stance revealed as Saudi clubs circle
The Times have now also backed up the claim that Heung-min Son is the subject of renewed interest from the Saudi Pro League after a failed attempt to sign him during the summer of 2023.
MORE SPURS STORIES
It is explained that the Pro League is looking to sell its television rights to international audiences, including in the Far East, and Son is seen as someone who would open up the competition to new fans.
However, the report states that the 32-year-old would need to be persuaded to move to Saudi Arabia, having rejected multiple advances over the past couple of years.
The outlet claims that in 2023, Al-Ittihad were willing to pay Tottenham £55m to land Son and they offered the forward a four-year contract worth around £25m.
However, the South Korean turned down the prospect of a move and remarked at the time: “I have many things to do in the Premier League, money doesn’t matter to me now, and the pride of playing football, to play in my favourite league is important.”
Heung-min Son deserves a say on his Tottenham future
Daniel Levy’s popularity among the Tottenham fan base has seemingly not improved despite the club’s Europa League success.
Reports indicate that the Spurs hierarchy are fearful of a backlash from the fans if they sack Postecoglou. To top that off by selling the captain and fan favourite seems almost unthinkable.
I would expect Tottenham to offer Son another year’s extension, given the loyal service over the past decade, Son deserves to have input on his future.
